- Kapitel 12 -

(1 Kings 14:25–28)

And it comes to pass, at the establishing of the kingdom of Rehoboam, and at his strengthening himself, he has forsaken the Law of YHWH, and all Israel with him.

And it comes to pass, in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt has come up against Jerusalem—because they trespassed against YHWH—

with one thousand and two hundred chariots, and with sixty thousand horsemen, and there is no number to the people who have come with him out of Egypt—Lubim, Sukkiim, and Cushim—

and he captures the cities of the bulwarks that [are] of Judah, and comes to Jerusalem.

And Shemaiah the prophet has come to Rehoboam and the heads of Judah who have been gathered to Jerusalem [to escape] from the presence of Shishak, and says to them, “Thus said YHWH: You have forsaken Me, and also, I have left you in the hand of Shishak”;

and the heads of Israel are humbled—and the king—and they say, “YHWH [is] righteous.”

And when YHWH sees that they have been humbled, a word of YHWH has been [sent] to Shemaiah, saying, “They have been humbled; I do not destroy them, and I have given to them as a little thing for an escape, and I do not pour out My fury in Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak;

but they become servants to him, and they know My service, and the service of the kingdoms of the lands.”

And Shishak king of Egypt comes up against Jerusalem, and takes the treasures of the house of YHWH and the treasures of the house of the king—he has taken the whole—and he takes the shields of gold that Solomon had made;

and King Rehoboam makes shields of bronze in their stead, and has given [them] a charge on the hand of the heads of the runners who are keeping the opening of the house of the king;

and it comes to pass, from the time of the going in of the king to the house of YHWH, the runners have come in and lifted them up, and brought them back to the chamber of the runners.

And in his being humbled, the wrath of YHWH has turned back from him, so as not to destroy to completion; and also, there have been good things in Judah.

Rehoboam’s Reign and Death

(1 Kings 14:21–24)

And King Rehoboam strengthens himself in Jerusalem and reigns; for Rehoboam [is] a son of forty-two years in his reigning, and he has reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that YHWH has chosen to put His Name there, out of all the tribes of Israel, and the name of his mother [is] Naamah the Ammonitess,

and he does evil, for he has not prepared his heart to seek YHWH.

And the matters of Rehoboam, the first and the last, are they not written among the matters of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer, concerning genealogy? And the wars of Rehoboam and Jeroboam [are for] all the days;

and Rehoboam lies with his fathers, and is buried in the City of David, and his son Abijah reigns in his stead.

Ägypten greift Juda an

(1. Könige 14,25-28)

Als nun die Herrschaft Roboams stark und fest geworden war, fiel er von dem Gesetze des Herrn ab und ganz Israel mit ihm.

Im fünften Jahre der Herrschaft Roboams aber zog Sesak, der König von Ägypten, gegen Jerusalem herauf (denn sie hatten sich gegen den Herrn versündigt)

mit tausendzweihundert Wagen und sechzigtausend Reitern, und zahllos war das Kriegsvolk, welches mit ihm aus Ägypten gekommen war, Libyer, Troglodyten und Äthiopier.

Und er nahm die befestigten Städte in Juda ein und kam bis nach Jerusalem.

Semejas aber, der Prophet, ging zu Roboam und den Fürsten von Juda, welche sich auf der Flucht vor Sesak in Jerusalem zusammengefunden hatten, und sprach zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr: Ihr habt mich verlassen, so habe auch ich euch Sesaks Hand überlassen.

Da wurden die Fürsten von Israel samt dem Könige bestürzt und sprachen: Der Herr ist gerecht.

Da nun der Herr sah, dass sie sich verdemütigt hatten, erging das Wort des Herrn an Semejas also: Weil sie sich verdemütigt haben, will ich sie nicht verderben, sondern ihnen ein wenig Hilfe schaffen und mein Grimm soll sich nicht über Jerusalem ergießen durch Sesak.

Doch sollen sie ihm untertan werden, damit sie den Unterschied zwischen meinem Dienste und dem Dienste eines irdischen Reiches erkennen!

Sesak also, der König von Ägypten, zog von Jerusalem ab, nachdem er die Schätze des Hauses des Herrn und des Hauses des Königs geraubt, und nahm alles mit sich, auch die goldenen Schilde, welche Salomon gemacht hatte.

Für diese machte der König eherne und gab sie den Obersten der Schildträger, welche an der Vorhalle des Palastes Wache hielten.

Und so oft der König in das Haus des Herrn ging, kamen die Schildträger und nahmen dieselben und brachten sie alsdann wieder in ihre Rüstkammer zurück.

Jedoch weil sie sich verdemütigt hatten, ließ der Zorn des Herrn von ihnen ab und sie wurden nicht völlig vertilgt; es wurden ja auch in Juda gute Werke gefunden.

Das Ende von Rehabeams Herrschaft

(1. Könige 14,21-24)

So befestigte sich der König Roboam zu Jerusalem und herrschte; er war aber einundvierzig Jahre alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und herrschte siebzehn Jahre in Jerusalem, der Stadt, die der Herr aus allen Stämmen Israels erwählt, um seinen Namen daselbst beständig sein zu lassen; seine Mutter hieß Naama, eine Ammanitin.

Er tat aber Böses und richtete sein Herz nicht darauf, den Herrn zu suchen.

Die Taten Roboams aber, die früheren und die späteren, sind sorgfältig und ausführlich in den Büchern Semejas, des Propheten, und Addos, des Sehers, aufgeschrieben; und Roboam und Jeroboam lagen ihr Leben lang miteinander im Streite.

Und Roboam entschlief zu seinen Vätern und ward in der Davidsstadt begraben. Sein Sohn Abia ward König an seiner Statt.
