- Kapitel 30 -

And it comes to pass, in the coming in of David and his men to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites have pushed toward the south, and to Ziklag, and strike Ziklag, and burn it with fire,

and they take the women who [are] in it captive; they have not put anyone to death from small to great, and they lead [them] away, and go on their way.

And David comes in—and his men—to the city, and behold, [it is] burned with fire, and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters have been taken captive.

And David lifts up—and the people who [are] with him—their voice and weep, until they have no power to weep.

And the two wives of David have been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite;

and David has great distress, for the people have said to stone him, for the soul of all the people has been bitter, each for his sons and for his daughters; and David strengthens himself in his God YHWH.

David Destroys the Amalekites

And David says to Abiathar the priest, son of Ahimelech, “Please bring the ephod near to me”; and Abiathar brings the ephod near to David,

and David inquires of YHWH, saying, “I pursue after this troop—do I overtake it?” And He says to him, “Pursue, for you certainly overtake, and certainly deliver.”

And David goes on, he and six hundred men who [are] with him, and they come to the Brook of Besor, and those left have stood still,

and David pursues, he and four hundred men (and two hundred men stand still who have been too faint to pass over the Brook of Besor),

and they find a man, an Egyptian, in the field, and take him to David, and give bread to him, and he eats, and they cause him to drink water,

and give to him a piece of a bunch of dried figs, and two bunches of raisins, and he eats, and his spirit returns to him, for he has not eaten bread nor drunk water [for] three days and three nights.

And David says to him, “Whose [are] you? And where [are] you from?” And he says, “I [am] an Egyptian youth, servant to a man, an Amalekite, and my lord forsakes me, for I have been sick [for] three days,

we pushed [to] the south of the Cherethite, and against that which [is] to Judah, and against the south of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire.”

And David says to him, “Do you bring me down to this troop?” And he says, “Swear to me by God [that] you do not put me to death, nor do you shut me up into the hand of my lord, and I bring you down to this troop.”

And he brings him down, and behold, they are spread out over the face of all the earth, eating, and drinking, and celebrating, with all the great spoil which they have taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

And David strikes them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day, and there has not escaped of them a man, except four hundred young men who have ridden on the camels and flee.

And David delivers all that the Amalekites have taken; David has also delivered his two wives.

And nothing of theirs has lacked, from small to great, and to sons and daughters, and from the spoil, even to all that they had taken to themselves, David has brought back the whole,

and David takes the whole of the flock and of the herd [that] they have led on before these livestock, and they say, “This [is] David’s spoil.”

The Spoils Are Divided

And David comes to the two hundred men who were too faint to go after David, and whom they cause to abide at the Brook of Besor, and they go out to meet David, and to meet the people who [are] with him, and David approaches the people, and asks of them of welfare.

And every bad and worthless man, of the men who have gone with David, answers, indeed, they say, “Because that they have not gone with us we do not give to them of the spoil which we have delivered, except each his wife and his children, and they lead away and go.”

And David says, “You do not do so, my brothers, with that which YHWH has given to us, and He preserves us, and gives the troop which comes against us into our hand;

and who listens to you in this thing? For as the portion of him who was brought down into battle, so also [is] the portion of him who is abiding by the vessels—they share alike.”

And it comes to pass from that day and forward, that he appoints it for a statute and for an ordinance for Israel to this day.

And David comes to Ziklag, and sends of the spoil to [the] elderly of Judah, to his friends, saying, “Behold, a blessing for you of the spoil of the enemies of YHWH,”

to those in Beth-El, and to those in South Ramoth, and to those in Jattir,

and to those in Aroer, and to those in Siphmoth, and to those in Eshtemoa,

and to those in Rachal, and to those in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to those in the cities of the Kenites,

and to those in Hormah, and to those in Chor-Ashan, and to those in Athach,

and to those in Hebron, and to all the places where David—he and his men—had gone up and down.

Davids Konflikt mit den Amalekitern

Als nun David und seine Männer am dritten Tage nach Sikeleg kamen, hatten die Amalekiter von der Südseite her Sikeleg angegriffen und hatten es geschlagen und in Brand gesteckt,

Die Frauen, die dort waren, hatten sie gefangen weggeführt, klein und groß; niemanden aber hatten sie getötet, sondern sie hatten sie mit sich fortgeführt und waren ihres Weges gezogen.

Als nun David und seine Männer zur Stadt kamen und sie niedergebrannt fanden und ihre Frauen, ihre Söhne und Töchter gefangen weggeführt,

erhoben David und die Leute, welche mit ihm waren, ihre Stimme und weinten, bis sie keine Tränen mehr hatten.

Denn auch Davids beide Frauen waren gefangen weggeführt worden, Achinoam, die Jezrahelitin, und Abigail, die Frau Nabals von Karmel.

Da kam David in schwere Bedrängnis, denn das Volk wollte ihn steinigen, weil das Herz eines jeden wegen seiner Söhne und Töchter erbittert war; aber David fand Stärke durch den Herrn, seinen Gott.

Und er sprach zu dem Priester Abiathar, dem Sohne Achimelechs: bringe das Ephod zu mir! Da brachte Abiathar das Ephod zu David

und David befragte den Herrn und sprach: Soll ich diese Männer verfolgen und werde ich sie erreichen oder nicht? Der Herr sprach zu ihm: Verfolge sie, denn ohne Zweifel wirst du sie erreichen und ihnen den Raub abjagen!

Da zog David mit den sechshundert Mann, die mit ihm waren, hin und sie kamen bis zum Bache Besor; dort blieben einige ermüdet zurück.

David aber setzte die Verfolgung mit vierhundert Mann fort; denn zweihundert waren zurückgeblieben, weil sie ermüdet waren und den Bach Besor nicht überschreiten konnten.

Und sie trafen einen Ägypter auf dem Felde und führten ihn zu David und gaben ihm Brot zu essen und Wasser zu trinken,

auch ein Stück Feigenkuchen und zwei Bündel Rosinen. Als er dies gegessen hatte, kam ihm das Bewusstsein zurück und er erholte sich, denn er hatte drei Tage und drei Nächte hindurch weder Brot gegessen, noch Wasser getrunken.

Dann sprach David zu ihm: Wem gehörst du an? Woher bist du? Und wohin gehst du? Er antwortete: Ich bin ein Ägypter, der Knecht eines Amalekiters; aber mein Herr hat mich zurückgelassen, weil ich vorgestern krank wurde.

Wir haben nämlich einen Einfall in das Südland von Cerethi und in Juda und in den Süden von Kaleb gemacht und Sikeleg in Brand gesteckt.

Da sprach David zu ihm: Kannst du mich zu dieser Rotte hinführen? Er antwortete: Schwöre mir bei Gott, dass du mich nicht töten und mich nicht in die Hand meines Herrn ausliefern willst, so werde ich dich zu dieser Rotte hinführen. Und David schwor ihm.

Als er ihn nun dorthin geführt hatte, siehe, da lagerten jene weithin auf dem Boden und aßen und tranken und feierten ein Fest wegen all der Beute und des Raubes, die sie aus dem Lande der Philister und aus dem Lande Juda weggeschleppt hatten.

Und David schlug sie vom Abend an bis zum Abende des andern Tages und es entkam von ihnen nicht einer, außer vierhundert Jünglingen, welche die Kamele bestiegen hatten und geflohen waren.

So gewann David alles zurück, was die Amalekiter genommen hatten, und befreite auch seine beiden Frauen.

Und es fehlte nichts vom Kleinsten bis zum Größten, weder von den Söhnen noch von den Töchtern noch von der Beute und David brachte alles, was sie geraubt hatten, zurück.

Dann nahm er alle Schafe und Rinder und ließ sie vor sich hertreiben und sie sprachen: Das ist die Beute Davids!

Als nun David zu den zweihundert Männern kam, welche wegen Müdigkeit zurückgeblieben waren und David nicht hatten folgen können, so dass er sie am Bache Besor hatte bleiben lassen, zogen diese David und dem Volke, das bei ihm war, entgegen. Und David trat der Schar entgegen und bot ihnen den Friedensgruß.

Aber böse und nichtswürdige unter den Männern, die mit David gezogen waren, sprachen: Da sie nicht mit uns gegangen sind, werden wir mit ihnen nichts von der Beute, die wir gerettet haben, geben, sondern einem jeden mögen sein Weib und seine Kinder genügen; haben sie diese erhalten, so mögen sie gehen!

David aber sprach: Tuet nicht also, meine Brüder, mit dem, was der Herr uns gegeben, der uns behütet und die Räuber, die wider uns ausgezogen waren, in unsere Hand gegeben hat.

Auch soll niemand in dieser Sache auf euch hören; denn der, welcher in den Streit zieht, und der, welcher bei dem Gepäcke bleibt, sollen den gleichen Anteil haben und sie sollen gleichmäßig teilen.

So ist es denn von jenem Tage an gehalten worden und ist festgesetzt und bestimmt worden als Gesetz in Israel bis auf den heutigen Tag.

Als nun David nach Sikeleg kam, sandte er an die ihm befreundeten Ältesten Judas Geschenke von der Beute und ließ ihnen sagen: Empfanget eine Segenspende von der Beute der Feinde des Herrn!

Nämlich an die, welche in Bethel waren, und an die in Ramoth im Süden, an die in Jether,

an die in Aroer, an die in Sephamoth, an die in Esthamo,

an die in Rachal, an die in den Städten der Jerameeliter, an die in den Städten der Keniter,

an die in Arama, an die am See Asan, an die zu Athach,

an die zu Hebron, und an die übrigen, welche an den Orten waren, wo David mit seinen Männern geweilt hatte.
