- Kapitel 11 -

When the people became murmurers, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it, therefore his wrath was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed the vtmost parte of the hoste.

Then the people cryed vnto Moses: and when Moses praied vnto the Lord, the fire was quenched.

And he called the name of that place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord burnt among them.

And a nomber of people that was amog them, fell a lusting, and turned away, and the children of Israel also wept, and saide, Who shall giue vs flesh to eate?

We remember the fish which we did eat in Egypt for nought, the cucumbers, and the pepons, and the leekes, and the onions, and the garleke.

But now our soule is dryed away, we can see nothing but this Man.

(The Man also was as coriander seede, and his colour like the colour of bdelium.

The people went about and gathered it, and ground it in milles, or beat it in morters, and baked it in a cauldron, and made cakes of it, and the taste of it was like vnto the taste of fresh oyle.

And when the dewe fell downe vpon the hoste in the night, the Man fell with it)

The Complaint of Moses

Then Moses heard the people weepe throughout their families, euery man in the doore of his tent, and the wrath of the Lord was grieuously kindled: also Moses was grieued.

And Moses saide vnto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou vexed thy seruant? and why haue I not found fauour in thy sight, seeing thou hast put the charge of al this people vpon mee?

Haue I conceiued al this people? or haue I begotte them, that thou shouldest say vnto me, Cary them in thy bosome (as a nurse beareth the sucking childe) vnto the lande, for the which thou swarest vnto their fathers?

Where should I haue flesh to giue vnto al this people? for they weepe vnto me, saying, Giue vs flesh that we may eate.

I am not able to beare al this people alone, for it is too heauie for me.

Therefore if thou deale thus with mee, I pray thee, if I haue founde fauour in thy sight, kill me, that I behold not my miserie.

Seventy Elders Anointed

Then the Lord said vnto Moses, Gather vnto me seuetie men of ye Elders of Israel, whome thou knowest, that they are the Elders of the people, and gouernonrs ouer them, and bring them vnto the Tabernacle of the Congregation, and let them stand there with thee,

And I will come downe, and talke with thee there, and take of the Spirite, which is vpon thee, and put vpon them, and they shall beare the burthen of the people with thee: so thou shalt not beare it alone.

Furthermore thou shalt saye vnto the people, Bee sanctified against to morowe, and yee shall eate flesh: for you haue wept in the eares of the Lord, saying, Who shall giue vs flesh to eate? for we were better in Egypt: therefore the Lord will giue you flesh, and ye shall eate.

Ye shall not eat one day nor two daies, nor fiue daies, neither ten daies, nor twentie dayes,

But a whole moneth, vntill it come out at your nostrels, and bee lothesome vnto you, because ye haue contemned the Lord, which is among you, and haue wept before him, saying, Why came we hither out of Egypt?

And Moses saide, Six hundreth thousande footemen are there of the people, among whom I am: and thou saiest, I will giue them flesh, that they may eate a moneth long.

Shall the sheepe and the beeues be slaine for them, to finde them? either shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them to suffice them?

And the Lord saide vnto Moses, Is the Lordes hand shortened? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to passe vnto thee, or no.

So Moses went out, and told the people the wordes of the Lord, and gathered seuentie men of the Elders of the people, and set them round about the Tabernacle.

Then the Lord came downe in a cloude, and spake vnto him, and tooke of the Spirit that was vpon him, and put it vpon the seuentie Ancient men: and when the Spirit rested vpon them, then they prophecied, and did not cease.

But there remained two of the men in the hoste: the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad, and the Spirit rested vpon them, (for they were of them that were written, and went not out vnto the Tabernacle) and they prophecied in the hoste.

Then there ranne a yong man, and tolde Moses, and saide, Eldad and Medad doe prophesie in the hoste.

And Ioshua the sonne of Nun the seruant of Moses one of his yong men answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.

But Moses saide vnto him, Enuiest thou for my sake? yea, would God that all the Lordes people were Prophets, and that the Lord woulde put his Spirit vpon them.

And Moses returned into the hoste, he and the Elders of Israel.

The Quail and the Plague

Then there went foorth a winde from the Lord, and brought quailes from the Sea, and let them fall vpon the campe, a dayes iourney on this side, and a dayes iourney on the other side, round about the hoste, and they were about two cubites aboue the earth.

Then the people arose, al that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quailes: he that gathered the least, gathered ten Homers full, and they spred them abroade for their vse round about the hoste.

While the flesh was yet betweene their teeth, before it was chewed, euen the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with an exceeding great plague.

So the name of the place was called, Kibroth-hattaauah: for there they buried the people that fell a lusting.

From Kibroth-hattaauah ye people tooke their iourney to Hazeroth, and abode at Hazeroth.

Das Volk beklagt sich

Inzwischen erhob sich ein Murren des Volkes wider den Herrn, das sich über seine Beschwerden beklagte. Als dies der Herr hörte, ward er erzürnt; und das Feuer des Herrn ging wider sie aus und verzehre den äußersten Teil des Lagers.

Da das Volk zu Moses rief, betete Moses zu dem Herrn, und das Feuer erlosch.

Da nannte er den Namen dieses Ortes Feuersbrunst, weil des Herrn Feuer wider sie aufgelodert war.

Die zugelaufene Menge nämlich, welche mit ihnen heraufgezogen war, entbrannte von Gelüsten, und saß, und weinte, und nachdem sich auch die Söhne Israels zu ihnen gesellt hatten, sprachen sie: Wer wird uns Fleisch zu essen geben?

Wir gedenken der Fische, welche wir in Ägypten umsonst aßen, und die Kürbisse, Melonen, Lauche, Zwiebeln, und der Knoblauch kommen uns in den Sinn.

Unsere Seele ist verschmachtet, unsere Augen sehen nichts als das Man.

Das Man war wie eine Koriandersame und hatte eine Farbe wie Bdellium.

Und das Volk ging umher, und sammelte es, und mahlte es mit Mühlen, oder zerstieß es in Mörsern, und kochte es in Töpfen, und machte Kuchen daraus, die wie Ölkuchen schmeckten.

Und wenn der Tau des Nachts auf das Lager herabfiel, so fiel auch zugleich das Man mit herab.

Moses hörte also Familie um Familie am Eingange ihrer Zelte weinen. Und es entbrannte der Zorn des Herrn sehr; und auch Moses schien es unerträglich,

und er sprach zu dem Herrn: Warum hast du deinem Knechte dies zu Leibe getan? Warum finde ich nicht Gnade vor dir, und warum hast du die Last dieses ganzen Volkes auf mich gelegt?

Habe ich denn all dies Volk empfangen, oder ich es geboren, dass du zu mir sagst: Trage sie an deinem Busen, wie eine Amme ein kleines Kind zu tragen pflegt, und trage sie hin in das Land, das du ihren Vätern zugeschworen hast?

Woher soll ich Fleisch nehmen, um es einer so großen Menge zu geben? Sie weinen wider mich und sagen: Gib uns Fleisch zu essen!

Ich allein vermag dieses ganze Volk nicht zu tragen; denn es ist zu schwer für mich.

Wenn es dir aber anders gut scheint, so bitte ich dich, töte mich und lass mich Gnade in deinen Augen finden, dass ich kein so großes Übel erleiden muss.

Die siebzig Ältesten

Da sprach der Herr zu Moses: Rufe mir siebzig Männer von den Ältesten Israels zusammen, von denen du weißt, dass sie die Vornehmsten des Volkes und seine Führer sind, und führe sie an den Eingang des Zeltes des Bundes, und lasse sie daselbst bei dir stehen,

dann will ich herabkommen und mit dir reden; und ich will etwas von deinem Geiste nehmen und ihnen geben, dass sie die Last des Volkes mit dir tragen und du nicht allein damit beschwert seiest.

Auch dem Volke sage: Heiliget euch! morgen werdet ihr Fleisch essen. Denn ich habe euch sagen hören: Wer wird uns Fleisch zu essen geben? Es ging uns wohl in Ägypten. So wird euch nun der Herr Fleisch zu essen geben;

nicht nur einen Tag, oder zwei, oder fünf oder zehn, oder zwanzig,

sondern einen ganzen Monat lang, bis ihr es nicht mehr riechen könnt und es euch zum Ekel wird, deshalb weil ihr den Herrn verworfen habt, der in eurer Mitte ist, und vor ihm geweint und gesagt habt: Warum sind wir aus Ägypten gezogen?

Und Moses sprach: Sechshunderttausend Fußgänger zählt dieses Volk, und du sagst: Ich werde ihnen einen ganzen Monat lang Fleisch zu essen geben?

Sollen etwa so viele Schafe und Rinder geschlachtet werden, dass es für sie zur Speise hinreichen kann? Oder sollen alle Fische des Meeres zusammengebracht werden, damit sie ihnen Sättigung gewähren?

Der Herr aber antwortete ihm: Ist denn die Hand des Herrn ohnmächtig? Jetzt sollst du sehen, ob mein Wort durch die Tat Erfüllung findet.

Da kam Moses zu dem Volke und berichtete ihm die Worte des Herrn. Alsdann versammelte er siebzig Männer von den Vornehmsten Israels und ließ sie sich um das Zelt herum aufstellen.

Und der Herr kam in der Wolke herab, und sprach zu ihm, und nahm etwas von dem Geiste, der Moses erfüllte, und gab ihn den siebzig Männern. Als nun der Geist sich auf sie niedergelassen hatte, weissagten sie und hörten nicht mehr auf.

Es waren aber zwei Männer im Lager zurückgeblieben, der eine hieß Eldad, der andere Medad; auch auf sie ließ sich der Geist nieder, denn auch sie waren aufgeschrieben, aber nicht zu dem Zelte hinausgegangen.

Und als sie im Lager weissagten, lief ein Knabe hin, und berichtete es Moses, und sprach: Eldad und Medad weissagen im Lager.

Da sprach Josue, der Sohn Nuns, der Diener Moses, der Auserwählte unter sehr vielen sogleich: Moses, mein Gebieter, wehre ihnen!

Er aber sprach: Was eiferst du für mich? Möchte doch das ganze Volk weissagen und der Herr ihnen seinen Geist geben!

Und Moses und die Ältesten Israels kehrten in das Lager zurück.

Der Herr sendet die Wachtel

Da erhob sich ein Wind, vom Herrn gesandt, und hob Wachteln jenseits des Meeres auf, und brachte sie in das Lager, eine Tagreise ringsum auf allen Seiten des Lagers, und sie flogen in der Luft zwei Ellen hoch über der Erde.

Da machte sich das Volk jenen ganzen Tag, und die Nacht, und den andern Tag hindurch daran, und sammelte Wachteln ein; wer wenig sammelte, hatte zehn Kor; und sie dörrten sie rings um das Lager.

Noch war das Fleisch zwischen ihren Zähnen, und noch war diese Speise nicht aufgezehrt; siehe da entbrannte der Zorn des Herrn über das Volk, und er schlug es mit einer sehr schweren Strafe.

Und man nannte diesen Ort Gräber der Lüsternheit; denn allda begruben sie das Volk, welches lüstern gewesen war. Von den Gräbern der Lüsternheit brachen sie auf, und kamen nach Haseroth, und blieben daselbst.
