- Kapitel 14 -

The worde of the Lord that came vnto Ieremiah, concerning the dearth.

Iudah hath mourned, and the gates thereof are desolate, they haue bene brought to heauinesse vnto the grounde, and the cry of Ierusalem goeth vp.

And their nobles haue sent their inferiours to the water, who came to the welles, and founde no water: they returned with their vessels empty: they were ashamed and confounded, and couered their heads.

For the grounde was destroyed, because there was no rayne in the earth: the plowmen were ashamed, and couered their heads.

Yea, the hinde also calued in the fielde, and forsooke it, because there was no grasse.

And the wilde asses did stande in the hygh places, and drew in their winde like dragons their eyes did faile, because there was no grasse.

O Lord, though our iniquities testifie against vs, deale with vs according to thy name: for our rebellions are many, we sinned against thee.

O the hope of Israel, the sauiour thereof in the time of trouble, why art thou as a strager in ye land, as one that passeth by to tary for a night?

Why art thou as a man astonied, and as a strong man that cannot helpe? yet thou, O Lord, art in the middes of vs, and thy Name is called vpon vs: forsake vs not.

Thus saith the Lord vnto this people, Thus haue they delited to wander: they haue not refrained their feete, therefore the Lord hath no delight in them: but he will now remember their iniquitie, and visite their sinnes.

Then sayd the Lord vnto me, Thou shalt not pray to do this people good.

When they fast, I will not heare their cry, and when they offer burnt offering, and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sworde, and by the famine and by the pestilence.

Then answered I, Ah Lord God, beholde, the prophets say vnto them, Ye shall not see the sworde, neither shall famine come vpon you, but I wil giue you assured peace in this place.

Then the Lord said vnto me, The prophets prophecie lyes in my Name: I haue not sent them, neither did I command them, neither spake I vnto them, but they prophecie vnto you a false vision, and diuination, and vanitie, and deceitfulnes of their owne heart.

Therefore thus saith the Lord, Concerning the prophets that prophecie in my Name, whom I haue not sent, yet they say, Sworde and famine shall not be in this land, by sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

And the people to whome these prophets doe prophecie, shalbe cast out in the streetes of Ierusalem, because of the famine, and the sword, and there shall be none to bury them, both they, and their wiues, and their sonnes, and their daughters: for I wil powre their wickednes vpon them.

Therefore thou shalt say this worde vnto them, Let mine eyes drop downe teares night and day without ceasing: for the virgine daughter of my people is destroyed with a great destruction, and with a sore grieuous plague.

For if I go into the field, behold the slaine with the sworde: and if I enter into the citie, behold them that are sicke for hunger also: moreouer the Prophet also and the Priest go a wandring into a land that they know not.

A Prayer for Mercy

(Isaiah 63:15–19)

Hast thou vtterly reiected Iudah, or hath thy soule abhorred Zion? why hast thou smitten vs, that we cannot be healed? Wee looked for peace, and there is no good, and for the time of health, and behold trouble.

We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickednesse and the iniquitie of our fathers: for we haue sinned against thee.

Doe not abhorre vs: for thy Names sake cast not downe the throne of thy glory: remember and breake not thy couenant with vs.

Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles, that can giue raine? or can the heauens giue showres? is it not thou, O Lord our God? therefore we will waite vpon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

Schwert, Hungersnot und Pestilenz

Wort des Herrn, das an Jeremias erging aus Anlass der Dürre.

Es trauert das Land von Juda, seine Tore liegen in düsterer Trauer zu Boden und das Klagegeschrei Jerusalems steigt empor.

Die Vornehmen schicken ihre Untergebenen nach Wasser aus; sie kommen, um zu schöpfen, und finden kein Wasser; sie bringen ihre Gefäße leer zurück, beschämt und betrübt, und verhüllen ihr Haupt.

Weil das Land brach liegt, da kein Regen darauf fällt, stehen die Ackerer beschämt und verhüllen ihr Haupt.

Denn auch die Hirschkuh verlässt ihr Junges, das sie auf dem Felde geboren, weil kein Grün da ist.

Die Wildesel stehen auf den Felsenhöhen und schnappen nach Luft wie die Drachen; ihre Augen verschmachten, denn es ist kein Grün da.

Wenn unsere Vergehungen wider uns Zeugnis ablegen, so handle du, Herr, um deines Namens willen; denn unsere Abtrünnigkeiten sind zahlreich, wider dich haben wir gesündigt.

Du Erwartung Israels, du sein Retter und Heiland zur Zeit der Not, warum willst du wie ein Fremdling im Lande sein und wie ein Wanderer, der nur einkehrt, um zu übernachten?

Warum willst du wie ein unsteter Mann sein, wie ein Kriegsmann, der nicht zu helfen vermag? Du bist ja doch in unserer Mitte, Herr! und über uns wird dein Name angerufen, verlass uns nicht!

So spricht der Herr zu diesem Volke, das gern hin und her schweift und nicht ruht, weshalb auch der Herr kein Wohlgefallen an ihm hat: Nun wird er ihrer Freveltaten gedenken und ihre Sünden ahnden.

Und der Herr sprach zu mir: Bitte nicht für dieses Volk zum Heile!

Wenn sie fasten, werde ich nicht auf ihr Flehen hören; und wenn sie Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer darbringen, werde ich diese nicht annehmen; vielmehr will ich sie durch Schwert, Hunger und Pest aufreiben.

Da sprach ich: Ach, ach, ach! Herr, Gott! Die Propheten sagen ihnen: Ihr werdet das Schwert nicht sehen und Hunger wird euch nicht heimsuchen, sondern wahren Frieden wird der Herr euch an dieser Stätte geben.

Der Herr aber sprach zu mir: Lügen weissagen die Propheten in meinem Namen, ich habe sie nicht gesandt und ihnen nicht geboten und nicht zu ihnen geredet; erlogene Gesichte, Wahrsagerei, Betrug und ihres eigenen Herzens Wahn weissagen sie euch.

Darum spricht der Herr also über die Propheten, die in meinem Namen weissagen, ohne von mir gesandt zu sein, indem sie sagen: Schwert und Hunger wird nicht in dies Land kommen: „Durch Schwert und Hunger werden diese Propheten umkommen.

Das Volk aber, welchem sie weissagen, wird auf den Straßen Jerusalems durch Hunger und Schwert hingestreckt liegen, samt seinen Frauen, Söhnen und Töchtern, und niemand wird sie begraben, denn ich will ihre Bosheit über sie ausschütten.“

Auch dies Wort sollst du zu ihnen sagen: Meine Augen strömen von Tränen Tag und Nacht und hören nicht auf; denn mit furchtbarer Verwüstung wird die Tochter meines Volkes geschlagen werden, mit unheilbaren Schlägen schwer verwundet werden.

Wenn ich auf das Feld hinausgehe, siehe da vom Schwerte Erschlagene! Wenn ich in die Stadt komme, siehe da vor Hunger Verschmachtete! Auch Propheten und Priester werden in ein Land ziehen, das sie nicht kennen.

Das Volk bittet um Gnade

(Jesaja 63,15-19)

Hast du denn Juda gänzlich verworfen, oder ist Sion deiner Seele zum Abscheu geworden? Warum hast du uns denn so geschlagen, dass es keine Heilung mehr gibt? Wir harrten auf Frieden, aber es kommt nichts Gutes; auf eine Zeit der Heilung und siehe, es kommt Schrecknis!

Herr! wir erkennen unsere Freveltaten, das Unrecht unserer Väter, dass wir wider dich gesündigt haben.

Überliefere uns nicht der Beschimpfung, um deines Namens willen, und entehre uns nicht, den Thron deiner Herrlichkeit; gedenke doch und hebe deinen Bund mit uns nicht auf!

Gibt es etwa unter den Götzen der Heiden solche, die Regen spenden, oder können die Himmel von selbst Regen geben? Bist nicht du es, Herr, unser Gott, auf den wir hoffen? Denn du hast alles dies gemacht.
