- Kapitel 37 -

(2 Kings 19:1–7)

And when the King Hezekiah heard it, he rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth and came into the House of the Lord.

And he sent Eliakim the stewarde of the house, aud Shebna the chanceller, with the Elders of the Priestes, clothed in sackcloth vnto Isaiah the Prophet, the sonne of Amoz.

And they sayd vnto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of tribulation and of rebuke and blasphemie: for the children are come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring foorth.

If so be the Lord thy God hath heard the wordes of Rabshakeh, whom the King of Asshur his master hath sent to raile on the liuing God, and to reproch him with wordes which the Lord thy God hath heard, then lift thou vp thy prayer for the remnant that are left.

So the seruants of the King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

And Isaiah sayde vnto them, Thus say vnto your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not afrayd of the wordes that thou hast heard, wherewith the seruants of the king of Asshur haue blasphemed me.

Beholde, I wil send a blast vpon him, and he shall heare a noyse, and returne to his owne land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his owne land.

Sennacherib’s Blasphemous Letter

(2 Kings 19:8–13)

So Rabshakeh returned, and found the King of Asshur fighting against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

He heard also men say of Tirhakah, King of Ethiopia, Beholde, he is come out to fight against thee: and when he heard it, he sent other messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

Thus shall ye speake to Hezekiah King of Iudah, saying, Let not thy God deceiue thee, in whom thou trustest, saying, Ierusalem shall not be giuen into the hand of the King of Asshur.

Beholde, thou hast heard what the Kings of Asshur haue done to all lands in destroying them, and shalt thou be deliuered?

Haue the gods of the nations deliuered them, which my fathers haue destroyed? as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden, which were at Telassar?

Where is the King of Hamath, and the King of Arpad, and the King of the citie of Sepharuaim, Hena and Iuah?

Hezekiah’s Prayer

(2 Kings 19:14–19)

So Hezekiah receiued the letter of the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went vp into the House of the Lord, and Hezekiah spread it before the Lord.

And Hezekiah prayed vnto the Lord, saying,

O Lord of hostes, God of Israel, which dwellest betweene the Cherubims, thou art very God alone ouer all the kingdomes of the earth: thou hast made the heauen and the earth.

Encline thine eare, O Lord, and heare: open thine eyes, O Lord, and see, and heare all the wordes of Saneherib, who hath sent to blaspheme the liuing God.

Trueth it is, O Lord, that the Kings of Asshur haue destroyed all lands, and their countrey,

And haue cast their gods in ye fire: for they were no gods, but the worke of mans hands, euen wood or stone: therefore they destroyed them.

Nowe therefore, O Lord our God, saue thou vs out of his hand, that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe, that thou onely art the Lord.

Sennacherib’s Fall Prophesied

(2 Kings 19:20–34)

Then Isaiah the sonne of Amoz sent vnto Hezekiah, saying, Thus sayth the Lord God of Israel, Because thou hast prayed vnto me, concerning Saneherib king of Asshur,

This is the worde that the Lord hath spoken against him, the virgine, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorne: the daughter of Ierusalem, hath shaken her head at thee.

Whome hast thou railed on and blasphemed? and against whome hast thou exalted thy voyce, and lifted vp thine eyes on hie? euen against the holy one of Israel.

By thy seruants hast thou railed on the Lord, and sayd, By the multitude of my charets I am come vp to the top of the mountaines to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut downe the hie cedars thereof, and the faire firre trees thereof, and I will goe vp to the heightes of his top and to the forest of his fruitfull places.

I haue digged and drunke the waters, and with the plant of my feete haue I dryed all the riuers closed in.

Hast thou not heard howe I haue of olde time made it, and haue formed it long ago? and should I now bring it, that it should be destroyed, and layde on ruinous heapes, as cities defensed?

Whose inhabitants haue small power, and are afrayd and confounded: they are like the grasse of the field and greene herbe, or grasse on the house tops, or corne blassed afore it be growen.

But I know thy dwelling, and thy going out, and thy comming in, and thy fury against me.

Because thou ragest against me, and thy tumult is come vnto mine eares, therefore will I put mine hooke in thy nostrels, and my bridle in thy lips, and wil bring thee backe againe the same way thou camest.

And this shalbe a signe vnto thee, O Hezekiah, Thou shalt eate this yeere such as groweth of it selfe: and the second yeere, such things as growe without sowing: and in the third yeere, sowe ye and reape, and plant vineyards, and eate the fruite thereof.

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Iudah, shall againe take roote downward and beare fruite vpward.

For out of Ierusalem shall goe a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeale of the Lord of hostes shall doe this.

Therefore thus sayth the Lord, concerning the King of Asshur, He shall not enter into this citie, nor shoote an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a mount against it.

By the same way that he came, he shall returne, and not come into this citie, saith the Lord.

For I will defend this citie to saue it, for mine owne sake, and for my seruant Dauids sake.

Jerusalem Delivered from the Assyrians

(2 Kings 19:35–37; 2 Chronicles 32:20–23)

Then the Angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the campe of Asshur an hundreth, fourescore, and fiue thousand: so when they arose early in the morning, beholde, they were all dead corpses.

So Saneherib king of Asshur departed, and went away and returned and dwelt at Nineueh.

And as he was in the temple worshipping of Nisroch his god, Adramelech and Sharezer his sonnes slewe him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Ararat: and Esarhaddon his sonne reigned in his steade.

(2. Könige 19,1-7)

Und es begab sich, als der König Ezechias dies gehört hatte, zerriss er seine Kleider, hüllte sich in ein Bußgewand und ging in das Haus des Herrn.

Und er sandte Eliakim, der über das königliche Haus gesetzt war, und Sobna, den Schreiber, und die Ältesten aus den Priestern in Bußgewändern zu Isaias, dem Sohne des Amos, dem Propheten

und sie sprachen zu ihm: Also spricht Ezechias: Ein Tag der Bedrängnis und Züchtigung und Lästerung ist dieser Tag, denn die Kinder sind bis zur Geburt gekommen und es ist keine Kraft da, sie zu gebären!

Dass doch der Herr, dein Gott, auf die Worte Rabsakes hörte, welchen der König von Assyrien, sein Herr, gesandt, um den lebendigen Gott zu lästern und mit den Reden zu schmähen, die der Herr, der Gott, vernommen hat; lass also dein Gebet aufsteigen für den Rest, der noch vorhanden.

Und die Diener des Königs Ezechias kamen zu Isaias.

Isaias aber antwortete ihnen: Saget eurem Herrn dies: So spricht der Herr: Fürchte dich nicht vor den Worten, welche du gehört, mit denen mich die Diener des Königs von Assyrien gelästert haben.

Siehe, ich werde ihm einen Geist einflößen und er soll eine Kunde vernehmen und in sein Land zurückkehren und ich werde ihn in seinem Lande durch das Schwert fallen lassen.

Sennacheribs Drohung und Hiskias Gebet

(2. Könige 19,8-13)

Rabsakes aber kehrte zurück und traf den König von Assyrien im Kampfe gegen Lobna; denn er hatte vernommen, dass er von Lachis abgezogen sei.

Und er hörte über Tharaka, den König von Äthiopien, dass man sagte: Er ist ausgezogen, um wider dich zu kämpfen! Als er dies vernahm, sandte er Boten zu Ezechias mit der Weisung:

Also sprechet zu Ezechias, dem König von Juda: Lass dich nicht täuschen von deinem Gott, auf den du vertraust, durch die Zusicherung: Jerusalem wird nicht in die Hand des Königs von Assyrien gegeben werden!

Siehe, du hast alles vernommen, was die Könige von Assyrien allen Ländern getan haben, die sie verwüstet haben, und du solltest gerettet werden können?

Haben etwa die Götter der Völker jene gerettet, denen meine Väter den Untergang bereitet haben, Gozam und Haram und Reseph und die Söhne von Eden in Thalassar?

Wo ist der König von Emath und der König von Arphad und der König der Stadt Sepharvaim, von Ana und Ava?

(2. Könige 19,14-19)

Und Ezechias nahm das Schreiben aus der Hand der Boten und las es und ging in das Haus des Herrn hinauf und breitete es vor dem Herrn aus.

Und Ezechias betete zu dem Herrn und sprach:

Herr der Heerscharen, Gott Israels der du übe dem Cherubim thronst, du allein bist der Gott über alle Reiche der Erde, du hast Himmel und Erde erschaffen.

Neige dein Ohr, o Herr! und höre; öffne Herr! deine Augen und siehe; merke auf alle Worte Sennacheribs, die er überbringen ließ, um den lebendigen Gott zu lästern.

Freilich, o Herr! haben die Könige von Assyrien die Länder und deren Gebiete wüste gemacht

und deren Götter ins Feuer geworfen; denn es waren keine Götter, sondern Werke von Menschenhand, Holz und Stein, und diese haben sie vertilgt.

Jetzt aber, Herr unser Gott! Rette uns aus seiner Hand, und alle Reiche der Erde mögen erkennen, dass du allein der Herr bist!

Das Wort des HERRN über Sennacherib

(2. Könige 19,20-34)

Und Isaias, der Sohn des Amos, sandte zu Ezechias und ließ ihm sagen: Also spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Um was du mich gebeten hast gegen Sennacherib, den König von Assyrien,

ist dies der Ausspruch, welchen der Herr über ihn getan hat: Er verachtet dich und spottet deiner die Jungfrau, die Tochter Sion; hinter dir her schüttelt das Haupt die Tochter Jerusalem.

Wen hast du gehöhnt und wen hast du gelästert, gegen wen deine Stimme erhoben und deiner Augen Stolz emporgerichtet? Gegen den Heiligen Israels!

Durch deine Diener hast du den Herrn gehöhnt und gesprochen: Mit der Menge meiner Wagen habe ich die Höhen der Berge erstiegen, des Libanon Gipfel, und ich will seine höchsten Zedern und seine erlesenen Tannen umhauen und bis zu seinem höchsten Gipfel vordringen, bis zu der Waldung seines Karmel.

Ich habe nach Wasser gegraben und es getrunken und ausgetrocknet mit meiner Füße Spur alle Bäche der Dämme.

Hast du nicht gehört, was ich von ferner her hierin getan? Von alters her habe ich es bereitet und jetzt herbeigeführt, indem die kampfesgerüsteten Hügel und die befestigten Städte vernichtet wurden.

Ihre Bewohner zagten mit gelähmter Hand, erschraken und wurden zuschanden; sie wurden wie Heu auf dem Felde, wie Gras auf der Weide, wie Gewächs auf dem Dache, das verdorrt, ehe es zur Reife kommt.

Dein Wohnen, dein Ausgehen und Eingehen kenne ich und auch dein Rasen wider mich!

Weil du wider mich tobtest, stieg dein Übermut empor zu meinen Ohren, darum werde ich einen Ring in deine Nase legen und ein Gebiss in deine Lippen und dich zurückführen auf dem Wege, auf dem du gekommen.

Dir aber sei dies zum Wahrzeichen: In diesem Jahre iss, was von selber wächst, und im zweiten Jahre genieße Baumfrüchte; im dritten Jahre aber säet und erntet, pflanzet Weinberge und verzehret deren Frucht.

Und was gerettet und übrig ist aus dem Hause Juda, wird Wurzel treiben nach unten und Frucht tragen nach oben.

Denn von Jerusalem wird ein Überrest ausgehen und Erlösung vom Berge Sion, der Eifer des Herrn der Heerscharen wird dies vollbringen.

Darum spricht der Herr also von dem Könige von Assyrien: Er wird nicht in diese Stadt hineinkommen und seinen Pfeil hineinschießen und kein Schild wird davor kommen und keinen Wall wird er in ihrem Umkreise aufwerfen.

Auf dem Wege, auf dem er gekommen ist, wird er zurückkehren und in diese Stadt nicht kommen, spricht der Herr.

Ich werde diese Stadt beschützen und sie retten um meinetwillen und um Davids, meines Dieners, willen.

Sennacheribs Niederlage und Tod

(2. Könige 19,35-37; 2. Chronik 32,20-23)

Ein Engel des Herrn aber ging aus und erschlug im Lager der Assyrier hundertfünfundachtzigtausend Mann. Und als man des Morgens aufstand, siehe, da waren diese alle entseelte Leichen.

Da brach Sennacherib, der König von Assyrien, auf und zog ab und kehrte zurück und wohnte in Ninive.

Und es begab sich, als er im Tempel Nesroch, seinen Gott, anbetete, erschlugen ihn Adramelech und Sarasar, seien Söhne, mit dem Schwerte, und sie flohen in das Land Ararat. Sein Sohn Asarhaddon aber herrschte an seiner Statt.
