- Kapitel 26 -

(Acts 9:1–19; Acts 22:1–21)

Then Agrippa sayd vnto Paul, Thou art permitted to speake for thy selfe. So Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himselfe.

I thinke my selfe happy, King Agrippa, because I shall answere this day before thee of all the things whereof I am accused of the Iewes.

Chiefly, because thou hast knowledge of all customes, and questions which are among the Iewes: wherefore I beseech thee, to heare me patiently.

As touching my life from my childhood, and what it was from the beginning among mine owne nation at Hierusalem, know all the Iewes,

Which knewe me heretofore, euen from my elders (if they would testifie) that after the most straite sect of our religion I liued a Pharise.

And now I stand and am accused for the hope of the promise made of God vnto our fathers.

Whereunto our twelue tribes instantly seruing God day and night, hope to come: for the which hopes sake, O King Agrippa, I am accused of the Iewes.

Why should it be thought a thing incredible vnto you, that God should raise againe the dead?

I also verely thought in my selfe, that I ought to doe many contrarie things against the Name of Iesus of Nazareth.

Which thing I also did in Hierusalem: for many of the Saints I shut vp in prison, hauing receiued authoritie of the hie Priests, and when they were put to death, I gaue my sentence.

And I punished them throughout all the Synagogues, and compelled them to blaspheme, and being more mad against them, I persecuted them, euen vnto strange cities.

At which time, euen as I went to Damascus with authoritie, and commission from the hie Priests,

At midday, O King, I sawe in the way a light from heauen, passing the brightnes of the sunne, shine round about mee, and them which went with me.

So when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voyce speaking vnto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee to kicke against pricks.

Then I sayd, Who art thou, Lord? And he sayd, I am Iesus whom thou persecutest.

But rise and stand vp on thy feete: for I haue appeared vnto thee for this purpose, to appoint thee a minister and a witnesse, both of the things which thou hast seene, and of the things in the which I will appeare vnto thee,

Deliuering thee from this people, and from the Gentiles, vnto whom now I send thee,

To open their eyes, that they may turne from darknes to light, and from the power of Satan vnto God, that they may receiue forgiuenes of sinnes, and inheritance among them, which are sanctified by fayth in me.

Wherefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient vnto the heauenly vision,

But shewed first vnto them of Damascus, and at Hierusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Iudea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turne to God, and doe workes worthy amendment of life.

For this cause the Iewes caught me in the Temple, and went about to kill me.

Neuertheles, I obteined helpe of God, and continue vnto this day, witnessing both to small and to great, saying none other things, then those which the Prophets and Moses did say should come,

To wit, that Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light vnto this people, and to the Gentiles.

Festus Interrupts Paul’s Defense

And as he thus answered for himselfe, Festus said with a loude voyce, Paul, thou art besides thy selfe: much learning doeth make thee mad.

But he said, I am not mad, O noble Festus, but I speake the wordes of trueth and sobernes.

For the King knoweth of these things, before whom also I speake boldly: for I am perswaded that none of these things are hidden from him: for this thing was not done in a corner.

O King Agrippa, beleeuest thou the Prophets? I know that thou beleeuest.

Then Agrippa said vnto Paul, Almost thou perswadest me to become a Christian.

Then Paul sayd, I would to God that not onely thou, but also all that heare me to day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

And when he had thus spoken, the King rose vp, and the gouernour, and Bernice, and they that sate with them.

And when they were gone apart, they talked betweene themselues, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death, nor of bonds.

Then sayd Agrippa vnto Festus, This man might haue bene loosed, if hee had not appealed vnto Cesar.

Paulus' frühes Leben

(Apostelgeschichte 9,1-19; Apostelgeschichte 22,1-21)

Agrippa aber sprach zu Paulus: Es wird dir gestattet, für dich selbst zu reden. Da streckte Paulus die Hand aus, und hob an sich zu verantworten.

Ich schätze mich glücklich, König Agrippa! dass ich über alles, dessen die Juden mich beschuldigen, mich vor dir heute verantworten darf,

vorzüglich darum, weil dir alle jüdischen Gebräuche und Streitfragen bekannt sind. Darum bitte ich, du wollest mich mit Geduld anhören.

Mein Lebend von Jugend auf, wie ich es von Anfang an unter meinem Volke in Jerusalem geführt, kennen alle Juden.

Sie kennen mich von jeher (wofern sie es bezeugen wollen), dass ich ehedem nach der strengsten Schule unserer Religion als Pharisäer gelebt habe.

Und nun stehe ich vor Gericht wegen der Hoffnung jener Verheißung, welche von Gott an unsere Väter ergangen ist,

zu welcher unsere zwölf Stämme, Tag und Nacht Gott dienend, zu gelangen hoffen. Dieser Hoffnung wegen, o König! werde ich von den Juden angeklagt.

Warum wird es bei euch für unglaublich gehalten, wenn Gott Tote auferweckt?

Auch ich war der Meinung gegen den Namen Jesus, des Nazareners, viel Feindliches tun zu müssen.

Das habe ich denn auch getan in Jerusalem, und viele der Heiligen habe ich in die Gefängnisse geworfen, nachdem ich von den Hohenpriestern Vollmacht erhalten hatte; und wenn sie getötet werden sollten, habe ich meine Stimme dazu gegeben.

Und von Synagoge zu Synagoge zog ich sie oftmals zur Strafe, und trieb sie an zu lästern; ja immer mehr wutentbrannt verfolgte ich sie bis in die auswärtigen Städte.

Paulus berichtet über seine Bekehrung

Als ich aber in solcher Absicht nach Damaskus reiste, mit Vollmacht und Auftrag von den Hohenpriestern,

da sah ich mitten am Tage, auf dem Wege, o König! ein Licht vom Himmel, heller als der Glanz der Sonne, mich und die, welche mit mir waren, umstrahlen.

Und während wir alle zu Boden fielen, hörte ich eine Stimme in hebräischer Sprache zu mir sagen: Saulus, Saulus! was verfolgst du mich? Es ist hart für dich, gegen den Stachel auszuschlagen.

Ich aber sprach: Wer bist du, Herr? Der Herr aber sprach: Ich bin Jesus, den du verfolgst.

Aber stehe auf, und stelle dich auf deine Füße; denn ich bin erschienen, dich zum Diener und zum Zeugen dessen zu bestellen, was du gesehen hast, und dessen, was ich dir erscheinend kundgeben werde,

indem ich dich aussondere von dem Volke und von den Heiden, unter welche ich dich jetzt sende,

um ihre Augen zu öffnen, auf dass sie sich von der Finsternis zum Lichte, und von der Gewalt des Satans zu Gott bekehren, damit sie die Vergebung der Sünden und ein Erbe unter den Heiligen durch den Glauben an mich erlangen.

Paulus' Leben nach der Bekehrung

Darum, o König Agrippa! war ich der himmlischen Erscheinung nicht ungläubig,

sondern verkündete zuerst denen, die zu Damaskus und Jerusalem bis hinaus in das ganze Land Judäa waren, und den Heiden, dass sie Buße tun, und sich zu Gott bekehren sollten, indem sie würdige Früchte der Buße wirkten.

Und deßwillen ergriffen mich die Juden, als ich im Tempel war, und versuchten mich zu töten.

Durch Gottes Hilfe aber geschützt, stehe ich bis auf den heutigen Tag, und lege Zeugnis ab vor Klein und Groß, indem ich nichts anderes sage, als was die Propheten und Moses gesagt haben, dass es geschehen werde;

ob Christus dem Leiden unterworfen, ob er als Erster aus der Auferstehung der Toten dem Volke und den Heiden Licht verkünden werde.

Agrippa pariert Paulus' Herausforderung

Da er dies zu seiner Verteidigung redete, rief Festus mit lauter Stimme: Du bist von Sinnen, Paulus! Das viele Studieren macht dich unsinnig.

Paulus aber sagte: Ich bin nicht von Sinnen, vortrefflichster Festus, sondern ich rede Worte der Wahrheit und Besonnenheit.

Dem Könige sind diese Dinge bekannt, darum rede ich zu ihm mit Freimut, denn ich glaube, dass ihm nichts von diesen Dingen verborgen sein kann; ist doch nichts davon in einem Winkel geschehen.

Glaubst du den Propheten, König Agrippa? Ja, ich weiß, dass du glaubst.

Agrippa aber sprach zu Paulus: Beinahe überredest du mich, ein Christ zu werden.

Und Paulus sprach: Wollte Gott, dass sowohl durch Weniges, als durch Großes, nicht allein du, sondern auch alle, die mich hören, heute das würden, was ich bin, diese Bande ausgenommen.

Da stand der König auf, und der Landpfleger und Bernice, und die bei ihnen saßen.

Und als sie sich zurückgezogen hatten, sprachen sie miteinander und sagten: Dieser Mensch hat nichts, was Tod oder Bande verdient, getan.

Agrippa aber sagte zu Festus: Man hätte diesen Menschen bereits in Freiheit setzen können, wenn er nicht an den Kaiser Berufung eingelegt hätte.
