- Kapitel 24 -

(Exodus 30:11–16; 1 Chronicles 21:1–6)

And the wrath of the Lord was againe kindled against Israel, and he moued Dauid against them, in that he saide, Goe, number Israel and Iudah.

For the King said to Ioab the captaine of the hoste, which was with him, Goe speedily now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan euen to Beer-sheba, and nomber ye the people, that I may knowe the nomber of the people.

And Ioab saide vnto the King, The Lord thy God increase the people an hundreth folde more then they be, and that the eyes of my lorde the King may see it: but why doeth my lord the King desire this thing?

Notwithstanding the Kings worde preuailed against Ioab and against the captaines of the hoste: therefore Ioab and the captaines of the hoste went out from the presence of the King to nomber the people of Israel.

And they passed ouer Iorden, and pitched in Aroer at the right side of the citie that is in the middes of the valley of Gad and toward Iazer.

Then they came to Gilead, and to Tahtim-hodshi, so they came to Dan Iaan, and so about to Zidon,

And came to the fortresse of Tyrus and to all the cities of the Hiuites and of the Canaanites, and went towarde the South of Iudah, euen to Beer-sheba.

So when they had gone about all the lande, they returned to Ierusalem at the ende of nine moneths and twentie dayes.

And Ioab deliuered the nomber and summe of the people vnto the King: and there were in Israel eight hundreth thousande strong men that drewe swordes, and the men of Iudah were fiue hundreth thousand men.

Judgment for David’s Sin

(1 Chronicles 21:7–13)

Then Dauids heart smote him, after that he had numbred the people: and Dauid said vnto the Lord, I haue sinned exceedingly in that I haue done: therefore nowe, Lord, I beseech thee, take away the trespasse of thy seruant: for I haue done very foolishly.

And when Dauid was vp in the morning, the worde of the Lord came vnto the Prophet Gad Dauids Seer, saying,

Go, and say vnto Dauid, Thus saith ye Lord, I offer thee three thinges, chuse thee which of them I shall doe vnto thee.

So Gad came to Dauid, and shewed him, and said vnto him, Wilt thou that seuen yeeres famine come vpon thee in thy lande, or wilt thou flee three moneths before thine enemies, they following thee, or that there bee three dayes pestilence in thy land? nowe aduise thee, and see, what answere I shall giue to him that sent me.

And Dauid said vnto Gad, I am in a wonderfull strait: let vs fall nowe into the hand of the Lord, (for his mercies are great) and let mee not fall into the hand of man.

A Plague on Israel

(1 Chronicles 21:14–17)

So the Lord sent a pestilece in Israel, from the morning euen to the time appointed: and there dyed of the people from Dan euen to Beer-sheba seuentie thousand men.

And when the Angel stretched out his hande vpon Ierusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented of the euil, and said to the Angel that destroyed the people, It is sufficient, holde nowe thine hand. And the Angel of the Lord was by the threshing place of Araunah the Iebusite.

And Dauid spake vnto the Lord (when he sawe the Angel that smote the people) and saide, Behold, I haue sinned, yea, I haue done wickedly: but these sheepe, what haue they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against mee and against my fathers house.

David Builds an Altar

(1 Chronicles 21:18–30)

So Gad came the same day to Dauid, and said vnto him, Go vp, reare an altar vnto the Lord in the threshing floore of Araunah the Iebusite.

And Dauid (according to the saying of Gad) went vp, as the Lord had commanded.

And Araunah looked, and sawe the King and his seruants comming towarde him, and Araunah went out, and bowed himselfe before the King on his face to the ground,

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the King come to his seruant? Then Dauid answered, To bye the threshing floore of thee for to builde an altar vnto the Lord, that the plague may cease from the people.

Then Araunah saide vnto Dauid, Let my lord the King take and offer what seemeth him good in his eyes: beholde the oxen for the burnt offring, and charets, and the instruments of the oxen for wood.

(All these things did Araunah as a King giue vnto the King: and Araunah saide vnto the King, The Lord thy God be fauourable vnto thee)

Then the King saide vnto Araunah, Not so, but I will bye it of thee at a price, and will not offer burnt offring vnto ye Lord my God of that which doeth cost me nothing. So Dauid bought the threshing floore, and the oxen for fiftie shekels of siluer.

And Dauid built there an altar vnto the Lord, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings, and the Lord was appeased toward ye lande, and the plague ceased from Israel.

Davids Volkszählung von Israel und Juda

(2. Mose 30,11-16; 1. Chronik 21,1-6)

Der Zorn des Herrn aber entbrannte abermals gegen Israel und er reizte David gegen sie, indem er sprach: Auf, zähle Israel und Juda!

Da sprach der König zu Joab, dem Führer seines Heeres: Ziehe durch alle Stämme Israels von Dan bis Bersabee und zählet das Volk, damit ich seine Zahl erfahre.

Joab sprach zu dem Könige: Der Herr, dein Gott, möge dein Volk noch einmal so sehr mehren, als es jetzt ist, und möge es noch hundertfältig vermehren vor den Augen meines Herrn und Königs; doch was hat mein Herr und König mit solcher Sache vor?

Aber der Befehl des Königs ward aufrecht erhalten gegen die Worte Joabs und der Anführer des Heeres und Joab und die Anführer der Soldaten begaben sich von dem Angesichte des Königs hinweg, um das Volk Israel zu zählen.

Sie überschritten den Jordan und kamen nach Aroer rechts von der Stadt, welche im Tale Gad liegt,

und sie zogen durch Jazer nach Galaad und in das untere Land Hodsi und kamen in die Waldgegend von Dan. Dann gingen sie in die Umgebung von Sidon

und zogen an den Mauern von Thyrus vorüber und durch das ganze Land der Hevither und Chananiter und kamen in den Süden von Juda nach Bersabee.

Und nachdem sie das ganze Land durchzogen hatten, kamen sie nach neun Monaten und zwanzig Tagen wieder in Jerusalem an.

Da gab Joab dem Könige die Zahl des gemusterten Volkes an und es fanden sich in Israel achtmalhunderttausend streitbare Männer, die das Schwert führten, und in Juda fünfmalhunderttausend waffenfähige Männer.

Das Gericht über Davids Sünde

(1. Chronik 21,7-13)

Aber dem David schlug das Herz, nachdem das Volk gezählt worden, und er sprach zu dem Herrn: Ich habe schwer gesündigt durch diese Tat, aber ich bitte, Herr! nimm die Missetat deines Dieners hinweg, denn ich habe überaus töricht gehandelt.

Als sich nun David am Morgen erhob, erging das Wort des Herrn an Gad, den Propheten, den Seher Davids, also:

Gehe hin und rede zu David: So spricht der Herr: Unter drei Dingen wird dir die Wahl gestattet; erwähle eines, welches du davon willst, dass ich es dir tue.

Da nun Gad zu David kam, meldete er es ihm und sprach: Entweder soll eine Hungersnot sieben Jahre über dein Land kommen oder du sollst drei Monate lang vor deinen Feinden fliehen und sie sollen dich verfolgen oder es soll drei Tage hindurch eine Pest in deinem Lande herrschen. So überlege nun also und siehe zu, welche Antwort ich dem bringen soll, der mich gesandt hat.

David aber sprach zu Gad: Ich bin sehr bedrängt, aber es ist besser, in die Hände des Herrn zu fallen (denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist groß), als in die Hände der Menschen.

(1. Chronik 21,14-17)

Da sandte der Herr die Pest über Israel, vom Morgen an bis zur bestimmten Zeit und es starben von dem Volke, von Dan bis nach Bersabee, siebzigtausend.

Als nun der Engel des Herrn seine Hand über Jerusalem ausgestreckt hielt, um es zu verderben, erbarmte sich der Herr über das Elend und sprach zu dem Engel, der das Volk schlug: Genug, ziehe nun deine Hand zurück! Der Engel des Herrn aber stand bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Areuna.

Als David den Engel, der das Volk schlug, sah, sprach er zu dem Herrn: Ich bin es, der gesündigt hat, ich habe Unrecht getan; diese sind Schafe, was haben sie getan? Deine Hand wende sich, ich bitte dich, wider mich und das Haus meines Vaters.

Der Altar auf dem Mähdrescherboden

(1. Chronik 21,18-30)

An jenem Tage kam Gad zu David und sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin und errichte dem Herrn auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Areuna einen Altar!

Da ging David hin nach der Weisung Gads, welche der Herr ihm gegeben hatte.

Als nun Areuna aufsah, gewahrte er, dass der König und seine Diener zu ihm kamen,

und er trat hinaus, warf sich vor dem Könige nieder, verneigte sich mit dem Angesichte zur Erde und sprach: Welches ist die Ursache, dass mein Herr, der König, zu seinem Knechte kommt? David antwortete ihm: Um von dir die Tenne zu kaufen und den Herrn einen Altar zu erbauen, damit das Sterben, welches unter dem Volke wütet, aufhöre.

Areuna sprach zu David: Mein Herr und König nehme sie und opfere nach seinem Gefallen; hier hast du Rinder zum Brandopfer und den Wagen und die Joche der Rinder zur Verwendung als Holz.

Alles gab Areuna, der König dem Könige und Areuna sprach zu dem Könige: Der Herr, dein Gott, nehme deinen Wunsch auf!

Der König antwortete ihm, und sprach: Mit nichten so, wie du willst, sondern um Entgelt will ich es von dir kaufen und will dem Herrn, meinem Gott, keine Brandopfer darbringen, die ich ohne Kosten habe. So kaufte David denn die Tenne und die Rinder um fünfzig Sekel Silbers.

Und David baute dem Herrn daselbst einen Altar und brachte Brandopfer und Friedopfer dar, und der Herr ward mit dem Lande versöhnt und die Plage ward von Israel abgewehrt.
