- Kapitel 12 -

(Psalm 51:1–19)

Then the Lord sent Nathan vnto Dauid, who came to him, and sayd vnto him, There were two men in one citie, the one riche, and the other poore.

The rich man had exceeding many sheepe and oxen:

But the poore had none at all, saue one litle sheepe which he had bought, and nourished vp: and it grew vp with him, and with his children also, and did eate of his owne morsels, and dranke of his owne cup, and slept in his bosome, and was vnto him as his daughter.

Now there came a stranger vnto the rich man, who refused to take of his owne sheepe, and of his owne oxen to dresse for the stranger that was come vnto him, but tooke the poore mans sheepe, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

Then Dauid was exceeding wroth with the man, and sayde to Nathan, As the Lord liueth, the man that hath done this thing, shall surely dye,

And he shall restore the lambe foure folde, because he did this thing, and had no pitie thereof.

Then Nathan sayd to Dauid, Thou art the man. Thus sayth the Lord God of Israel, I anoynted thee King ouer Israel, and deliuered thee out of the hand of Saul,

And gaue thee thy lordes house, and thy lords wiues into thy bosome, and gaue thee the house of Israel, and of Iudah, and would moreouer (if that had bene too litle) haue giuen thee such and such things.

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandement of the Lord, to doe euill in his sight? thou hast killed Vriah the Hittite with ye sworde, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slaine him with the sworde of the children of Ammon.

Now therefore the sworde shall neuer depart from thine house, because thou hast despised me, and taken the wife of Vriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

Thus sayth the Lord, Behold, I will rayse vp euil against thee out of thine owne house, and will take thy wiues before thine eyes, and giue them vnto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wiues in the sight of this sunne.

For thou diddest it secretly: but I will doe this thing before all Israel, and before the sunne.

David’s Loss and Repentance

Then Dauid sayde vnto Nathan, I haue sinned against the Lord. And Nathan sayde vnto Dauid, The Lord also hath put away thy sinne, thou shalt not die.

Howbeit because by this deede thou hast caused the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the childe that is borne vnto thee shall surely die.

So Nathan departed vnto his house: and the Lord stroke the childe that Vriahs wife bare vnto Dauid, and it was sicke.

Dauid therefore besought God for the childe, and fasted and went in, and lay all night vpon the earth.

Then the Elders of his house arose to come vnto him, and to cause him to rise from the groud: but he would not, neither did he eate meate with them.

So on the seuenth day the child dyed: and the seruants of Dauid feared to tell him that the childe was dead: for they sayde, Beholde, while the childe was aliue, we spake vnto him, and he woulde not hearken vnto our voyce: how then shall we say vnto him, The childe is dead, to vexe him more?

But when Dauid sawe that his seruantes whispered, Dauid perceiued that the childe was dead: therefore Dauid sayde vnto his seruants, Is the childe dead? And they sayd, He is dead.

Then Dauid arose from the earth, and washed and anoynted himselfe, and changed his apparell, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped, and afterward came to his owne house, and bade that they should set bread before him, and he did eate.

Then saide his seruants vnto him, What thing is this, that thou hast done? thou diddest fast and weepe for the childe while it was aliue, but when the childe was dead, thou diddest rise vp, and eate meate.

And he sayde, While the childe was yet aliue, I fasted, and wept: for I sayde, Who can tell whether God will haue mercy on me, that the childe may liue?

But now being dead, wherefore shoulde I now fast? Can I bring him againe any more? I shall goe to him, but he shall not returne to me.

Solomon’s Birth

And Dauid comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in vnto her, and lay with her, and she bare a sonne, and he called his name Salomon: also the Lord loued him.

For the Lord had sent by Nathan the Prophet: therefore he called his name Iedidiah, because the Lord loued him.

The Capture of Rabbah

(1 Chronicles 20:1–3)

Then Ioab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and tooke the citie of the kingdome.

Therefore Ioab sent messengers to Dauid, saying, I haue fought against Rabbah, and haue taken the citie of waters.

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and besiege the city, that thou mayest take it, lest the victorie be attributed to me.

So Dauid gathered al the people together, and went against Rabbah, and besieged it, and tooke it.

And he tooke their Kings crowne from his head, (which weighed a talent of golde, with precious stones) and it was set on Dauids head: and he brought away the spoyle of the citie in exceeding great abundance.

And he carryed away the people that was therein, and put them vnder sawes, and vnder yron harowes, and vnder axes of yron, and cast them into the tyle kylne: euen thus did he with all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then Dauid and all the people returned vnto Ierusalem.

Nathans Gleichnis und Davids Bekenntnis

(Psalm 51,1-19)

Der Herr sandte daher Nathan zu David. Als dieser zu ihm kam, sprach er zu ihm: Zwei Männer waren in einer Stadt, der eine reich, der andere arm.

Der Reiche besaß Schafe und Rinder in sehr großer Menge.

Der Arme aber hatte nichts weiter als ein einziges Schäflein, das er gekauft und aufgezogen hatte, und das bei ihm zugleich mit seinen Kindern aufgewachsen war, es aß von seinem Brote, trank aus seinem Becher und schlief in seinem Schoße und es war ihm wie eine Tochter.

Als nun ein Fremder zu dem Reichen kam, dauerte es diesen, eines von seinen Schafen und Rindern zu nehmen, um dem Fremden, der zu ihm gekommen war, ein Mahl zu bereiten, und er nahm das Schaf des armen Mannes und bereitete für den, der zu ihm gekommen, ein Essen.

Da ergrimmte David in heftigem Zorne über den Mann und sprach zu Nathan: So wahr der Herr lebt, der Mann, der dies getan hat, ist ein Kind des Todes!

Das Schaf soll er vierfach erstatten, weil er das getan und kein Erbarmen gekannt hat!

Nathan aber sprach zu David: Du bist dieser Mann! So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Ich habe dich zum Könige über Israel gesalbt und ich habe dich aus der Hand Sauls errettet

und habe dir das Haus deines Herrn und die Frauen deines Herrn in deinen Schoß gegeben und dir das Haus Israel und Juda gegeben, und wenn dies wenig ist, so will ich noch weit Größeres hinzutun.

Warum also hast du das Wort des Herrn verachtet, um zu tun, was vor meinen Augen böse ist? Den Hethiter Urias hast du mit dem Schwerte erschlagen und sein Weib hast du dir zur Frau genommen und ihn hast du durch das Schwert der Söhne Ammons umgebracht.

Darum soll auch das Schwert nimmermehr von deinem Hause weichen, weil du mich verachtet und das Weib des Hethiters Urias genommen hast, dass sie dein Weib sei.

Deshalb spricht der Herr also: Siehe, ich werde Unglück über dich aus deinem Hause kommen lassen und werde deine Frauen vor deinen Augen wegnehmen und sie deinem Nächsten geben und er wird im Angesichte dieser Sonne deinen Frauen beiwohnen.

Denn du hast es heimlich getan, ich aber werde diese Drohung vor den Augen von ganz Israel und vor dem Angesichte der Sonne erfüllen.

Da sprach David zu Nathan: Ich habe wider den Herrn gesündigt! Nathan sprach zu David: So hat der Herr auch deine Sünde hinweggenommen, du wirst nicht sterben!

Weil du jedoch den Feinden des Herrn Anlass gegeben hast zu lästern, so soll der Sohn, der dir geboren ward, um dieser Schuld willen des Todes sterben.

Hierauf kehrte Nathan in sein Haus zurück. Und der Herr schlug das Kind, welches das Weib des Urias dem David geboren hatte, dass es aufgegeben ward.

Der Tod von Davids Sohn

Da flehte David zu dem Herrn um das Kind und fastete hart und schloss sich ein und warf sich auf die Erde.

Die Ältesten seines Hauses aber kamen und drangen in ihn, dass er von der Erde aufstehen sollte, doch er wollte nicht und genoss keine Speise mit ihnen.

Da geschah es am siebenten Tage, dass das Kind starb; die Diener Davids aber fürchteten sich, es ihm mitzuteilen, dass das Kind gestorben sei, denn sie sprachen: Sehet, als das Kind noch lebte, redeten wir zu ihm und er hörte nicht auf unsere Stimme; wie viel mehr wird er sich betrüben, wenn wir sagen: Der Knabe ist tot!

Als nun David sah, wie seine Diener flüsterten, erkannte er, dass das Kind gestorben sei, und sprach zu seinen Dienern: Ist der Knabe gestorben? Sie antworteten ihm: Er ist gestorben!

Da stand David von der Erde auf, wusch sich, salbte sich und wechselte seine Kleider. Alsdann ging er in das Haus des Herrn und betete an und kam in sein Haus zurück und begehrte, dass man ihm Speise vorsetzte und aß.

Seine Diener aber sprachen zu ihm: Was bedeutet das, was du getan hast? Um des Kindes willen hast du gefastet und geweint, als es noch lebte; nun aber, da der Knabe gestorben ist, bist du aufgestanden und hast Speise genossen.

Er sprach: Um des Kindes willen habe ich gefastet und geweint, so lange es noch lebte; denn ich dachte: Wer weiß, ob nicht etwa der Herr es mir schenkt und das Kind am Leben bleibt?

Da es nun aber gestorben ist, warum sollte ich fasten? Könnte ich es denn wieder zurückrufen? Ich werde vielmehr zu ihm gehen, aber es wird nicht zu mir zurückkehren.

Salomo wird geboren

Und David tröstete Bethsabee, sein Weib, und ging zu ihr und wohnte ihr bei; und sie gebar einen Sohn, den nannte er Salomon und der Herr liebte ihn.

Und er übergab ihn dem Propheten Nathan und nannte seinen Namen Liebling des Herrn, weil ihn der Herr liebte.

Rabba wird gefangen genommen

(1. Chronik 20,1-3)

Joab stand also im Felde gegen Rabbath der Söhne Ammons und berannte die Königsstadt.

Und Joab sandte Boten zu David und ließ ihm sagen: Ich habe Rabbath bestürmt und es ist nunmehr die Wasserstadt einzunehmen.

Sammle also nun den übrigen Teil des Volkes und belagere die Stadt und nimm sie ein, damit man nicht, wenn ich die Stadt erstürme, meinem Namen den Sieg zuschreibe.

David brachte also das ganze Volk zusammen und zog gegen Rabbath; und er griff an und nahm es ein.

Und er nahm die goldene Krone ihres Königs von seinem Haupte, ein Talent Goldes im Gewichte, mit den kostbarsten Edelsteinen besetzt, und man setzte sie auf Davids Haupt. Auch führte er aus der Stadt sehr viel Beute hinweg.

Die Bevölkerung derselben führte er gleichfalls herbei und ließ sie zersägen, mit Eisen beschlagene Wagen über sie herfahren, sie mit Messern zerhacken und durch Ziegelösen ziehen. So tat er mit allen Städten Ammons; und David und das ganze Heer kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück.
