- Kapitel 10 -

(1 Chronicles 19:1–9)

After this, the King of the children of Ammon dyed, and Hanun his sonne reigned in his steade.

Then sayde Dauid, I will shewe kindnesse vnto Hanun the sonne of Nahash, as his father shewed kindnesse vnto me. And Dauid sent his seruantes to comfort him for his father. So Dauids seruants came into the lande of the children of Ammon.

And the princes of the children of Ammon sayde vnto Hanun their lorde, Thinkest thou that Dauid doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters to thee? hath not Dauid rather sent his seruants vnto thee, to search the citie, and to spie it out, and to ouerthrow it?

Wherefore Hanun tooke Dauids seruants, and shaued off the halfe of their beard, and cut off their garments in the middle, euen to their buttockes, and sent them away.

When it was told vnto Dauid, he sent to meete them (for the men were exceedingly ashamed) and the King sayde, Tary at Iericho, vntill your beards be growen, then returne.

And when the children of Ammon sawe that they stanke in the sight of Dauid, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Aramites of the house of Rehob, and the Aramites of Zoba, twentie thousande footemen, and of King Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelue thousande men.

And when Dauid heard of it, he sent Ioab, and all the hoste of the strong men.

And the children of Ammon came out, and put their armie in araye at the entring in of the gate: and the Aramites of Zoba, and of Rehob, and of Ish-tob, and of Maacah were by themselues in the fielde.

David Defeats Ammon and Aram

(1 Chronicles 19:10–19)

When Ioab saw that the front of the battel was against him before and behinde, he chose of all the choyse of Israel, and put them in aray against the Aramites.

And the rest of the people hee deliuered into the hande of Abishai his brother, that hee might put them in aray against the children of Ammon.

And he sayde, If the Aramites be stronger then I, thou shalt helpe me, and if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, I will come and succour thee.

Be strong and let vs be valiant for our people, and for the cities of our God, and let the Lord do that which is good in his eyes.

Then Ioab, and the people that was with him, ioyned in battel with the Aramites, who fled before him.

And when the children of Ammon sawe that the Aramites fled, they fled also before Abishai, and entred into the citie. so Ioab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Ierusalem.

And when the Aramites sawe that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered them together.

And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Aramites that were beyond the Riuer: and they came to Helam, and Shobach the captaine of the hoste of Hadarezer went before them.

When it was shewed Dauid, then he gathered all Israel together, and passed ouer Iorden and came to Helam: and the Aramites set themselues in aray against Dauid, and fought with him:

And the Aramites fled before Israel: and Dauid destroyed seuen hundreth charets of the Aramites, and fourtie thousande horsemen, and smote Shobach the captaine of his hoste, who dyed there.

And when all the Kings, that were seruants to Hadarezer, saw that they fell before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and serued them. and the Aramites feared to helpe the children of Ammon any more.

Die Ammoniter und Syrer werden besiegt

(1. Chronik 19,1-9)

Darnach aber begab es sich, dass der König der Söhne Ammons starb und sein Sohn Hanon ward König an seiner statt.

Da sprach David: Ich will an Hanon, dem Sohne des Naas, Barmherzigkeit üben, wie auch sein Vater an mir Barmherzigkeit geübt hat. So sandte David denn hin, um ihn durch seine Diener über seines Vaters Tod zu trösten. Als aber die Diener Davids in das Land der Söhne Ammons kamen,

sprachen die Fürsten der Söhne Ammons zu Hanon, ihrem Herrn: Meinst du, dass David, um deinem Vater Ehre zu erweisen, Tröster zu dir gesandt hat? Und hat David nicht vielmehr darum seine Diener zu dir gesandt, um die Stadt zu erforschen und auszukundschaften und sie dann zu zerstören?

Da ließ Hanon die Diener Davids ergreifen und ihnen die Hälfte ihres Bartes abscheren und ihre Kleider halb bis zu dem Gefäße abschneiden und schickte sie so heim.

Als man David dies berichtete, sandte er ihnen entgegen, denn die Männer waren auf das schmählichste beschimpft, und David befahl ihnen: Bleibet in Jericho, bis euch der Bart wieder gewachsen ist, und dann kehret zurück!

Als aber die Söhne Ammons sahen, dass sie David eine Unbill angetan, sandten sie hin und dingten um Sold die Syrer von Rohob und die Syrer von Soba, zwanzigtausend Mann zu Fuß und von dem Könige von Maacha tausend Mann und zwölftausend Mann von Istob.

Als David dies hörte, sandte er Joab mit dem ganzen Heere seiner Krieger aus.

Die Söhne Ammons also zogen aus und stellten sich hart vor dem Eingange des Tores zur Schlacht auf, während die Syrer von Soba, Rohob, Istob und Maacha abgesondert auf freiem Felde standen.

Als nun Joab sah, dass man sich zum Kampfe sowohl von vorn als im Rücken gegen ihn gerüstet habe, traf er unter allen Auserlesenen Israels eine Auswahl und stellte sich den Syrern zur Schlacht entgegen,

den übrigen Teil des Volkes aber übergab er seinem Bruder Abisai, welcher sich gegen die Söhne Ammons aufstellte.

Und Joab sprach: Wenn die Syrer die Oberhand über mich gewinnen, so komm du mir zu Hilfe; wenn aber die Söhne Ammons über dich die Oberhand gewinnen, so komme ich dir zu Hilfe.

Sei tapfer und lass uns kämpfen für unser Volk und für die Stadt unseres Gottes! Der Herr aber wird tun, was in seinen Augen gut ist.

Als nun Joab und das Volk, das bei ihm war, in den Kampf gegen die Syrer rückte, flohen diese alsbald vor ihm.

Da aber die Söhne Ammons sahen, dass die Syrer geflohen waren, wandten auch sie sich vor Abisai zur Flucht und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück; hierauf kehrte Joab von den Söhnen Ammons zurück und kam nach Jerusalem.

Als nun die Syrer sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen waren, sammelten sie sich allzumal.

Und Adarezer sandte hin und ließ die Syrer, welche jenseits des Flusses waren, ausrücken und zog ihr Heer an sich; Sobach aber, der Feldherr Adarezers, war ihr Anführer.

Als dies David berichtet ward, zog er ganz Israel zusammen, ging über den Jordan und kam nach Helam; und die Syrer stellten sich David zur Schlacht entgegen und kämpften mit ihm.

Aber die Syrer flohen vor Israel und David tötete von den Syrern siebenhundert Wagen und vierzigtausend Reiter; auch schlug er Sobach, den Feldherrn, so dass dieser alsbald starb.

Als nun alle Könige, welche in Hilfsheere Adarezers waren, sahen, dass sie von Israel besiegt waren, fürchteten sie sich und achtundfünfzigtausend Mann flohen vor Israel. Und sie machten Friede mit Israel und wurden ihnen untertan und die Syrer fürchteten sich, den Söhnen Ammons ferner Hilfe zu leisten.
