- Kapitel 28 -

Nowe at that time the Philistims assembled their bandes and armie to fight with Israel: therfore Achish said to Dauid, Be sure, thou shalt go out with me to the battel, thou, and thy men.

And Dauid said to Achish, Surely thou shalt knowe, what thy seruant can doe. And Achish sayde to Dauid, Surely I will make thee keeper of mine head for euer.

(Samuel was then dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah his owne citie: and Saul had put away the sorcerers, and the soothsayers out of the land)

Then the Philistims assembled themselues, and came, and pitched in Shunem: and Saul assembled all Israel, and they pitched in Gilboa.

And when Saul saw the hoste of the Philistims, he was afraid, and his heart was sore astonied.

Therefore Saul asked counsel of the Lord, and the Lord answered him not, neither by dreames, nor by Vrim, nor yet by Prophets.

Saul and the Medium of Endor

Then saide Saul vnto his seruants, Seeke me a woman that hath a familiar spirite, that I may goe to her, and aske of her. And his seruants said to him, Beholde, there is a woman at En-dor that hath a familiar spirit.

Then Saul changed him selfe, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he saide, I pray thee, coniecture vnto me by the familiar spirite, and bring me him vp whome I shall name vnto thee.

And the woman saide vnto him, Beholde, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath destroyed the sorcerers, and the southsayers out of the land: wherefore then seekest thou to take me in a snare to cause me to die?

And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liueth, no harme shall come to thee for this thing.

Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring vp vnto thee? And he answered, Bring me vp Samuel.

And when the woman sawe Samuel, she cryed with a loude voyce, and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceiued me? for thou art Saul.

And the King said vnto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said vnto Saul, I saw gods ascending vp out of the earth.

Then he said vnto her, What facion is hee of? And she answered, An olde man commeth vp lapped in a mantel: and Saul knewe that it was Samuel, and he enclined his face to the grounde, and bowed him selfe.

And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me vp? Then Saul answered, I am in great distresse: for the Philistims make warre against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by Prophetes, neither by dreames: therefore I haue called thee, that thou mayest tell me, what I shall doe.

Then said Samuel, Wherefore then doest thou aske of me, seeing the Lord is gone from thee, and is thine enemie?

Euen the Lord hath done to him, as hee spake by mine hande: for the Lord will rent the kingdome out of thine hande, and giue it thy neighbour Dauid.

Because thou obeyedst not the voyce of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath vpon the Amalekites, therefore hath the Lord done this vnto thee this day.

Moreouer the Lord wil deliuer Israel with thee into the handes of the Philistims: and to morowe shalt thou and thy sonnes be with me, and the Lord shall giue the hoste of Israel into the handes of the Philistims.

Then Saul fell streight way all along on the earth, and was sore afraide because of the wordes of Samuel, so that there was no strength in him: for he had eaten no bread all the day nor all the night.

Then the woman came vnto Saul, and sawe that he was sore troubled, and said vnto him, See, thine handmaide hath obeyed thy voyce, and I haue put my soule in mine hande, and haue obeyed thy wordes which thou saydest vnto me.

Now therefore, I pray thee, hearke thou also vnto ye voyce of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsell of bread before thee, that thou mayest eat and get thee strength, and go on thy iourney.

But he refused, and said, I will not eate: but his seruants and the woman together compelled him, and he obeyed their voyce: so he arose from the earth, and sate on the bed.

Nowe the woman had a fat calfe in the house, and she hasted, and killed it, and tooke floure and kneaded it, and baked of it vnleauened bread.

Then she brought them before Saul, and before his seruants: and when they had eaten, they stoode, and went away the same night.

Es begab sich aber in jenen Tagen, dass die Philister ihre Heerhaufen sammelten, um sich zum Kriege gegen Israel zu rüsten. Da sprach Achis zu David: Du musst nun wissen, dass du mit mir im Heerlager ausziehen musst, du und deine Leute.

David sprach zu Achis: Nun sollst du erfahren, was dein Diener tun wird. Und Achis sprach zu David: Und ich will dich zum Hüter meines Hauptes machen für alle Zeit.

Saul konsultiert ein Medium

Samuel aber war gestorben und ganz Israel hatte ihn betrauert und sie hatten ihn zu Ramatha, in seiner Stadt, begraben. Nun hatte Saul die Zauberer und Wahrsager aus dem Lande entfernt.

Da sammelten sich die Philister und kamen und lagerten sich in Sunam, aber auch Saul sammelte ganz Israel und kam nach Gelboe.

Als Saul aber das Lager der Philister sah, geriet er in Furcht und sein Herz erschrak gar sehr.

Und er befragte den Herrn, aber dieser antwortete ihm nicht weder durch Traumgesichte noch durch Priester noch durch Propheten.

Da sprach Saul zu seinen Dienern: Suchet mir ein Weib, das einen Wahrsagegeist hat, so will ich zu ihr hingehen und durch sie fragen. Seine Diener sprachen zu ihm: In Endor ist ein Weib, das einen Wahrsagegeist hat.

Da veränderte er sein Äußeres, zog andere Kleider an und ging mit zwei Männern hin. Und als sie des Nachts zu dem Weibe kamen, sprach er zu ihr: Sage mir die Zukunft voraus durch den Wahrsagegeist und rufe mir herauf, wen ich dir bezeichnen werde!

Das Weib sprach zu ihm: Siehe, du weißt, was Saul getan und wie er die Zauberer und Wahrsager aus dem Lande ausgerottet hat; warum trachtest du mir also nach dem Leben, dass ich getötet werde?

Da schwur Saul ihr bei dem Herrn und sprach: So wahr der Herr lebt, es soll dir darum nichts Böses geschehen!

Nun sprach das Weib zu ihm: Wen soll ich dir herauf rufen? Er sprach: Samuel rufe mir herauf!

Als aber das Weib Samuel sah, schrie sie mit lauter Stimme und sprach zu Saul: Warum hast du mich hintergangen? Du bist ja Saul.

Der König sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht! Was hast du gesehen? Das Weib sprach zu Saul: Jemanden wie einen Gott sah ich aus der Erde heraufkommen.

Da sprach er zu ihr: Welches ist seine Gestalt? Sie sprach: Ein alter Mann kommt herauf und er ist in einen Mantel gehüllt. Da merkte Saul, dass es Samuel sei, und verneigte sich mit dem Angesichte bis zur Erde und warf sich nieder.

Samuel aber sprach zu Saul: Warum hast du mich beunruhigt, dass ich heraufgerufen ward? Saul sprach: Ich bin sehr bedrängt; denn die Philister kämpfen gegen mich und Gott hat mich verlassen und hat mich nicht erhören wollen weder durch die Propheten noch durch Traumgesichte; darum ließ ich dich rufen, dass du mir anzeigen mögest, was ich tun soll.

Samuel sprach: Was fragst du mich, da der Herr dich verlassen und sich deinem Mitwerber zugewendet hat?

Denn der Herr wir dir tun, wie er durch mich geredet hat, und wird dein Königtum aus deiner Hand reißen und deinem Nächsten, David, geben.

Weil du der Stimme des Herrn nicht gehorcht und seinen grimmigen Zorn an Amalek nicht vollstreckt hast; darum hat der Herr dir heute getan, was du leidest.

Und der Herr wird auch Israel mit dir in die Hände der Philister geben; morgen aber werdet ihr, du und deine Söhne, bei mir sein, und zudem wird der Herr das Lager Israels in die Hand der Philister geben.

Da fiel Saul der Länge nach jäh zur Erde nieder; denn er war über die Worte Samuels in großen Schrecken geraten, auch war er ohne Kraft, denn er hatte jenen ganzen Tag hindurch nichts gegessen.

Alsbald trat das Weib zu Saul, (denn er war sehr bestürzt) und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, deine Magd hat deiner Stimme gehorcht und ich habe mein Leben in Gefahr gebracht und auf deine Worte gehört, die du zu mir gesprochen hast.

So höre nun auch du auf die Stimme deiner Magd; ich will dir einen Bissen Brotes vorsetzen, damit du issest und wieder zu Kräften kommest und deines Weges zu ziehen vermögest.

Er aber weigerte sich und sprach; Ich werde nichts essen. Da drangen seine Diener und das Weib in ihn und er hörte zuletzt auf ihre Stimme und stand von der Erde auf und setzte sich auf das Lager.

Das Weib aber hatte ein Mastkalb im Hause, dies schlachtete sie eilends und nahm Mehl, knetete es und buk ungesäuertes Brot

und setzte es Saul und seinen Dienern vor. Als sie nun gegessen hatten, machten sie sich auf und gingen die ganze Nacht hindurch.
