- Kapitel 15 -

The servants of God praise him who has delivered them from idolatry; condemning both the makers and the worshippers of idols.

But you, our God, are gracious and true, patient, and in mercy ordering all things.(a)

And, indeed, if we sin, we are yours, knowing your greatness; and, if we do not sin, we know that we are counted with you.

For to have known you is perfect justice, and to know justice and your virtue is the root of immortality.

For the skillful planning of evil men has not led us into error, nor the shadow of a picture, a fruitless labor, an image having been sculpted through the use of diverse colors,

the sight of which gives desire to the foolish, and he loves the likeness of a lifeless image without a soul.

Deserving are the lovers of evil, those who hope in such things, and those who make them, and those who love them, and those who promote them.(b)

But even the potter, pressing laboriously, molds the soft earth into vessels, each one for our use. And from the same clay he molds vessels, those which are for clean use, and similarly, those which are for the opposite. But, as to what is the use of a vessel, the potter is the judge.

And with effort he molds an empty god of the same clay, he who a little before had been made from the earth, and, after brief time, he himself returns from whence he came, to be claimed by he who holds the debt of his soul.

Yet his concern is, not what his work will be, nor that his life is short, but that he is being contested by those who work with gold and silver, yet he also does the same to those who work with copper, and he glories that he makes worthless things.(c)

For his heart is ashes, and his hope is worthless dirt, and his life is more common than clay,

because he ignores the One who molded him, and who instilled in him a working soul, and who breathed into him a living spirit.(d)

Yet they even considered our life to be a plaything, and the usefulness of life to be the accumulation of wealth, and that we must be acquiring things in every possible way, even from evil.

For, above all else, he knows himself to be lacking, who, from fragile material of the earth forms vessels and graven images.

For all the foolish and unhappy, in charge of the way of the arrogant soul, are enemies of your people and rule over them,(e)

because they have esteemed all the idols of the nations as gods, which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor the fingers of hands to grasp, and even their feet are slow to walk.

For man made them, and he who borrowed his own breath, formed them. For no man will be able to form God in the likeness of himself.(f)

For, being mortal, he forms a dead thing with his unjust hands. Yet, he is better than those things that he worships, because he indeed has lived, though he is mortal, but they never have.

Moreover, they worship the most miserable animals, for, to make a foolish comparison, these others are worse.(g)

But not even from their appearance can anyone discern anything good in these animals. Yet they have fled from the praise of God, and from his blessing.

(d)15:11 Here is an example of the ancient view of the human being: body, spirit, soul. However, this does not mean that the human person is made of three parts. The word spiritum means life or breath or spirit. So spiritum vitalem can mean breath of life. The idea of spirit, in this ancient view of the human person, is more or less equivalent to being alive or to the breath of life. It is not a second soul, nor is it a second soul-like part of the human person. When a human being dies, the body is buried, the soul goes to the afterlife, and the spirit (i.e. the breath of life) is has ended because the body is no longer alive.(Conte)

(f)15:16 Should Deum be capitalized in this verse? Since man can form idols or false gods in his own image, this text is saying that man cannot form the one true God in his own image. Therefore, it should be capitalized.(Conte)

Die Diener Gottes preisen den, der sie vom Götzendienst befreit hat; sie verurteilen sowohl die Hersteller als auch die Anbeter von Götzen

Du aber, unser Gott! bist gütig und wahrhaft, langmütig und über alles voll Erbarmen waltend.

Denn wenn wir auch sündigen, sind wir doch dein, deine Größe wohl kennend; und wenn wir nicht sündigen, so wissen wir, dass wir dir zugehören.

Denn dich erkennen ist vollkommene Gerechtigkeit und deine Gerechtigkeit und Macht kennen ist die Wurzel der Unsterblichkeit.

Denn nicht hat uns menschlicher Kunst arge Erfindung in Irrwahn geführt noch ein gemalter Schatten, eine unfruchtbare Arbeit, nämlich ein Schnitzwerk mit bunten Farben bemalt,

dessen Anblick des Toren Lust reizt, dass er die leblose Gestalt eines toten Bildes lieb gewinnt.

Die Liebhaber des Bösen sind es wert, auf solche Dinge ihre Hoffnung zu setzen, sowohl die, welche sie verfertigen, wie die, welche sie lieben und verehren.

Mühsam knetet ja auch der Töpfer die Erde weich und macht daraus verschiedene Gefäße zu unserm Gebrauche. Aber von demselben Tone macht er Gefäße, welche reinem Ziele dienen, und ebenso solche für das Gegenteil; wozu aber ein jedes von diesen Gefäßen gebraucht werden soll, entscheidet der Töpfer.

So bildet er mit verwerflicher Mühe aus dem nämlichen Tone einen Gott, er, der kurz zuvor selbst aus Erde gebildet worden und in kurzem wieder dahin zurückkehrt, woher er genommen ist, wenn dies Darlehen der Seele, das er genoss, von ihm gefordert wird.

Jedoch seine Sorge ist nicht, dass er bald krank werden wird, noch, dass sein Leben so kurz ist, sondern er wetteifert mit Gold- und Silberarbeitern, ahmt die Erzgießer nach und macht sich einen Ruhm daraus, Trugbilder zu formen.

Denn sein Herz ist Asche und seine Hoffnung nichtiger als Erde und sein Leben verächtlicher als Ton,

kennt er doch den nicht, der ihn gebildet und der ihm eine tätige Seele eingehaucht und den Lebensodem eingeblasen hat.

Vielmehr halten sie unser Leben für ein Spiel, des Lebens Aufgabe für Trachten nach Gewinn und glauben, man müsse aus allem, auch aus dem Bösen, Gewinn ziehen.

Ein solcher weiß ja, dass er mehr als alle andern sündigt, indem er aus irdenem Stoffe zerbrechliche Gefäße und Bildwerke verfertigt.

Aber alle Toren und die über die Maßen unseligen Stolzen sind die Feinde deines Volkes, jene seine Unterdrücker.

Denn alle Götzen der Heiden halten sie für Götter, die doch weder ihre Augen zum Sehen brauchen können noch ihre Nase zum Einatmen der Luft noch ihre Ohren zum Hören noch die Finger ihrer Hände zum Betasten und deren Füße nicht minder träge zum Gehen sind.

Denn ein Mensch hat sie gemacht und einer, dem selbst der Odem geliehen ist, sie gebildet; kein Mensch vermag ja, einen ihm auch nur ähnlichen Götzen zu machen.

Denn da er selbst sterblich ist, formt er mit ruchlosen Händen nur Totes. Er selbst ist ja besser als die, welche er verehrt; denn, wenn auch sterblich, lebt er doch, jene aber niemals.

Aber auch die verächtlichsten Tiere verehren sie, denn mit der Unvernunft der anderen verglichen, sind sie noch viel schlechter als diese.

Nicht einmal ihr Anblick vermag dem Beschauer ein Wohlgefallen zu gewähren, sondern sie sind dem Lobe Gottes und dessen Segen entzogen.
