- Kapitel 7 -

Religious and moral duties.

Do not choose to do evil, and evil will not take hold of you.

Withdraw from the iniquitous, and evil will withdraw from you.

Son, do not sow evil in the furrows of injustice, and you will not reap them sevenfold.

Do not seek a role of leadership from the Lord, and do not seek a seat of honor from the king.

You should not justify yourself before God, for he is the Knower of hearts. And by no means should you wish to seem wise before the king.

Do not seek to become a judge, unless you have sufficient strength to shatter iniquities. Otherwise, you might fear the face of the powerful, and so establish a scandal within your integrity.

You should not sin against the multitude of a city, nor should you cast yourself against the people.

And you should not bind two sins together. For even in one sin, you will not go unpunished.

Do not be cowardly in your soul.

You should not be unwilling to beg, nor to give alms.

You should not say: “God will look with favor on the multitude of my gifts, and when I make an offering to the most high God, he will accept my gift.”

You should not ridicule a man in bitterness of soul. For there is One who humbles and who exalts: the all-seeing God.

Do not love a lie against your brother, nor should you act the same toward your friend.

Do not be willing to devise a lie of any kind. For the practice of lying is not good.

Do not choose to be verbose among a multitude of elders, and you should not repeat the words of your prayers.(a)

You should not hate laborious works, nor the rustic life created by the Most High.

You should not consider yourself to be among the multitude of the undisciplined.

Remember wrath. For it will not be delayed.

Humble your spirit greatly. For the retribution against the flesh of the impious is with fire and worms.

Do not betray your friend for the sake of money, and you should not spurn your dearest brother for the sake of gold.

Do not choose to depart from a good and understanding wife, whom you have been allotted in the fear of the Lord. For the grace of her modesty is above gold.

You should not harm the servant whose works are honest, nor the hired hand who entrusts his life to you.

Let an understanding servant be loved by you like your own soul. You should not cheat him out of freedom, nor abandon him to destitution.

Are cattle yours? Tend to them. And if they are useful, let them remain with you.

Are sons yours? Instruct them, and bow them down from their childhood.

Are daughters yours? Watch over their bodies. And you should not display a light-hearted attitude toward them.(b)

Give your daughter in marriage, and give her to an understanding man, and you will be doing a great work.

If a wife in accord with your soul is yours, you should not reject her. But do not entrust yourself to her who is hateful.

With your whole heart, honor your father. And you should not forget the complaints of your mother.

Remember that you would not have been born except through them. And so, give back to them as they also have done for you.

With all your soul, fear the Lord, and consider his priests to be holy.

With all your strength, love him who made you, and you should not abandon his ministers.

Honor God from your whole soul, and confer honor on the priests, and continue to purify yourself with your strength.(c)

Give them their portion, just as it has been commanded of you, from the first-fruits and from the purifications. And for your ignorant offenses, purify yourself with a smaller offering.

You should offer to the Lord the gift of your strength, and the sacrifice of sanctification, and the first-fruits of what is holy.

And reach out your hand to the poor, so that your atonement and your blessing may be perfected.

A gift has grace in the sight of all the living, but you should not prohibit grace for the dead.(e)

You should not fail to console those who are weeping, nor to walk with those who are mourning.

Do not let yourself be slow to visit the sick. For in this way, you will be confirmed in love.

In all your works, remember your very end, and so you will not sin, unto eternity.

Religiöse und moralische Pflichten

Tue nichts Böses, so widerfährt dir nichts Böses.

Halte dich fern vom Unrechten, so wird das Böse von dir lassen.

Sohn! Säe nichts Böses in die Furchen der Ungerechtigkeit, so wirst du es auch nicht siebenfältig ernten.

Begehre nicht vom Herrn Herrschaft noch von dem Könige einen Ehrenstuhl.

Stelle dich nicht als gerecht hin vor Gott, denn er ist der Herzenskenner; und vor dem Könige wolle nicht weise scheinen.

Trachte nicht darnach, Richter zu werden, wenn du nicht vermagst, dem Unrecht mit Kraft zu steuern; du möchtest etwa des Mächtigen Angesicht scheuen und deine Rechtschaffenheit in Gefahr bringen.

Verfehle dich nicht gegen die Bürger der Stadt und mische dich nicht unter den Pöbel.

Verstricke dich nicht in doppelte Sünden, denn schon die eine wird dir nicht ungestraft hingehen.

Sei nicht kleinmütig in deinem Herzen.

Versäume nicht zu beten und Almosen zu geben.

Sprich nicht: Gott wird auf die Menge meiner Gaben schauen, und wenn ich Gott, dem Allerhöchsten, meine Gaben darbringe, wird er sie annehmen.

Spotte des Menschen nicht, dessen Seele bekümmert ist; denn Gott, der erniedrigt und erhöht, sieht alles.

Streue nicht Lügen wider deinen Bruder aus und tue gleicherweise nicht wider deinen Freund.

Wolle nie eine Lüge sagen, denn die Gewöhnung daran ist nicht gut.

Sei nicht geschwätzig in der Versammlung der Greise und mache nicht viele Worte in deinem Gebete.

Hasse nicht beschwerliche Arbeit noch den Landbau, den der Allerhöchste geschaffen.

Halte dich nicht zu der Menge der Zuchtlosen.

Gedenke, dass der Zorn nicht zögern wird.

Demütige deinen Geist sehr, denn die Strafe für den Leib des Gottlosen ist Feuer und Wurm.

Handle nicht unrecht gegen deinen Freund, wenn er mit dem Gelde zögert, und verachte einen lieben Bruder nicht um Goldes willen.

Scheide dich nicht von einer verständigen und guten Frau, die du in der Furcht Gottes erlangt hast; denn die Anmut ihrer Sittsamkeit ist mehr wert als Gold.

Halte den Knecht nicht übel, der treu arbeitet, noch den Taglöhner, der seine Lebenskraft einsetzt.

Ein verständiger Knecht sei dir so lieb wie deine Seele, enthalte ihm die Freilassung nicht vor und lass ihn nicht arm von dir gehen.

Hast du Vieh, so warte sein, und bringt es dir Nutzen, so behalte es.

Hast du Söhne? So ziehe sie und beuge sie von Jugend auf.

Hast du Töchter? So hüte ihren Leib und zeige kein zu heiteres Angesicht vor ihnen.

Verheirate deine Tochter, und du hast ein großes Werk vollbracht, nur gib sie einem verständigen Manne.

Hast du eine Frau nach deinem Herzen, so verstoße sie nicht; und einer Gehässigen traue dich nicht an.

Von ganzem Herzen ehre deinen Vater und vergiss der Schmerzen deiner Mutter nicht.

Gedenke, dass du ohne sie nicht geboren wärest, und erweise ihnen Gutes, wie auch sie dir erwiesen haben.

Mit ganzer Seele fürchte den Herrn und seinen Priestern erweise Ehrerbietung.

Aus allen Kräften liebe den, der dich erschaffen, und verlass seine Diener nicht.

Ehre Gott aus ganzer Seele und ehre die Priester und entsündige dich durch Schulterstücke.

Gib ihnen, wie es dir befohlen ist, ihren Anteil von den Erstlingen und von den Reinigungsopfern und entsündige dich von deiner Versäumnis durch kleine Gaben.

Bringe dem Herrn die Gaben deiner Schulterstücke dar, das Opfer der Heiligung, sowie die Erstlinge des Geheiligten.

Reiche auch dem Armen deine Hand, damit deine Sühne und dein Segen vollkommen werden.

Wohltätigkeit beweise allem, was lebt, und auch dem Toten enthalte deine Huld nicht vor.

Lass die Weinenden nicht ohne Trost und wandle mit den Trauernden.

Lass es dich nicht verdrießen, einen Kranken zu besuchen; denn dadurch wirst du in der Liebe feststehen.

Bei allem, was du tust, gedenke an dein Ende, so wirst du in Ewigkeit nicht sündigen.
