- Kapitel 2 -

(Acts 19:8–12; Ephesians 1:1–2)

“And to the Angel of the Church of Ephesus write: Thus says the One who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands:

I know your works, and your hardship and patient endurance, and that you cannot stand those who are evil. And so, you have tested those who declare themselves to be Apostles and are not, and you have found them to be liars.

And you have patient endurance for the sake of my name, and you have not fallen away.

But I have this against you: that you have relinquished your first charity.(a)

And so, call to mind the place from which you have fallen, and do penance, and do the first works. Otherwise, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.(b)

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches. To him who prevails, I will give to eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of my God.

To the Church in Smyrna

And to the Angel of the Church of Smyrna write: Thus says the First and the Last, he who was dead and now lives:

I know your tribulation and your poverty, but you are rich, and that you are blasphemed by those who declare themselves to be Jews and are not, but who are a synagogue of Satan.(c)

You should fear nothing amid those things which you will suffer. Behold, the devil will cast some of you into prison, so that you may be tested. And you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful even unto death, and I will give to you the crown of life.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches. Whoever will prevail, he shall not be harmed by the second death.

To the Church in Pergamum

And to the Angel of the Church of Pergamus write: Thus says he who holds the sharp two-edged spear:(d)

I know where you dwell, where the seat of Satan is, and that you hold to my name and have not denied my faith, even in those days when Antipas was my faithful witness, who was slain among you, where Satan dwells.

But I have a few things against you. For you have, in that place, those who hold to the doctrine of Balaam, who instructed Balak to cast a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat and to commit fornication.

And you also have those who hold to the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.

So do penance to the same extent. If you do less, I will come to you quickly and I will fight against these ones with the sword of my mouth.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches. To him who prevails, I will give the hidden manna. And I will give to him a white emblem, and on the emblem, a new name has been written, which no one knows, except the one who receives it.

To the Church in Thyatira

(Acts 16:11–15)

And to the Angel of the Church of Thyatira write: Thus says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like shining brass.

I know your works, and your faith and charity, and your ministry and patient endurance, and that your more recent works are greater than the earlier ones.

But I have a few things against you. For you permit the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants, to commit fornication and to eat the food of idolatry.

And I gave her a time, so that she might do penance, but she is not willing to repent from her fornication.

Behold, I will cast her onto a bed, and those who commit adultery with her shall be in a very great tribulation, unless they repent from their works.(e)

And I will put her sons to death, and all the Churches shall know that I am the one who examines temperaments and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. But I say to you,(f)

and to the others who are at Thyatira: Whoever does not hold to this doctrine, and who has not ‘known the depths of Satan,’ as they say, I will not set any other weight upon you.

Even so, that which you have, hold on to it until I return.

And whoever will prevail and will observe my works even unto the end, I will give to him authority over the nations.(g)

And he shall rule them with an iron rod, and they shall be broken like the earthenware of a potter.

The same I also have received from my Father. And I will give to him the morning star.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches.”

(a)2:4 This could mean that charity is no longer first among these Christians, or that they no longer have charity to the degree that they had at first. Or both.(Conte)

(b)2:6 The Nicolaitans were an early heretical group. They took their name from one of the first seven Deacons, but he was never a part of the group, he did not establish it, and he would not have approved of it. They were know for sexual promiscuity. This group foreshadows groups in the present and near future. For example, there are the Society of Saint Pius X, who take their name from Pope Pius X, but he was never a part of the group, he did not establish it, and he would not have approved of it. And in the future, there will be groups that push for women deacons. The Church will approve of the ordination of women deacons, but the deeds of those who demand women deacons are hateful to God.(Conte)

(c)2:9 This reference to Jews who are associated with Satan refers to the fact that, in the second part of the tribulation, during the time of the Antichrist in the distant future, a significant number of Jews will follow the Antichrist. But later many of these will repent of this sin and will convert and follow Christ. It is those Jews who are a synagogue of Satan, and who will blaspheme against the true Christians of that time. But some devout Jews during that time will not follow the Antichrist at all, but will recognize that he is evil.(Conte)

Ephesus - Die lieblose Versammlung

(Apostelgeschichte 19,8-12; Epheser 1,1-2)

Dem Engel der Gemeinde zu Ephesus schreibe: So spricht der, welcher die sieben Sterne in seiner Rechten hält, welcher wandelt inmitten der sieben goldenen Leuchter:

Ich kenne deine Werke, und deine Mühe, und deine Geduld, und das du die Bösen nicht ertragen kannst; und du hast die geprüft, welche sich Apostel nennen, und es nicht sind, und hast sie als Lügner erfunden.

Und du hast Geduld, und hast viel ertragen um meines Namens willen, und bist nicht müde geworden.

Aber ich habe wider dich, dass du deine erste Liebe verlassen hast.

So gedenke nun, von wo du herabgesunken bist, tue Buße, und übe die ersten Werke: wo nicht, so komme ich schnell über dich und werde deinen Leuchter von seiner Stelle rücken, wenn du nicht Buße tust.

Aber das hast du, dass du die Werke der Nikolaiten hassest, welche auch ich hasse.

Wer Ohren hat, der höre, was der Geist zu den Gemeinden spricht: Wer überwindet, dem werde ich zu essen geben von dem Baume des Lebens, der im Paradiese meines Gottes ist.

Smyrna - Die verfolgte Versammlung

Und dem Engel der Gemeinde zu Smyrna schreibe: So spricht der Erste und Letzte, der tot war und lebt:

Ich kenne deine Bedrängnis, und deine Armut, doch du bist reich, und du wirst gelästert von denen, die sich selbst Juden nennen und es nicht sind, sondern eine Synagoge des Satans.

Fürchte nichts von dem, was dir an Leiden bevorsteht. Siehe, der Teufel wird einige von euch in das Gefängnis werfen, damit ihr geprüft werdet; und ihr werdet Drangsal haben zehn Tage lang. Sei getreu bis zum Tode, so werde ich dir die Krone des Lebens geben!

Wer Ohren hat, der höre, was der Geist zu den Gemeinden spricht: Wer siegt, soll keine Schädigung erfahren von dem zweiten Tode.

Pergamus - Die kompromittierende Versammlung

Und dem Engel der Gemeinde zu Pergamus schreibe: So spricht, der das zweischneidige Schwert hat:

Ich weiß, wo du wohnst: wo der Thron Satans ist, und du hältst fest an meinem Namen und hast den Glauben an mich nicht verleugnet. Und in jenen Tagen bewährte Antipas sich als mein treuer Zeuge, der bei euch getötet ward, da, wo der Satan wohnt.

Aber ich habe wider dich etwas Weniges, dass du dort solche hast, welche zu der Lehre Balaams halten, der den Balak lehrte, Ärgernis auszurichten vor den Kindern Israels, Götzenopfer zu essen und Unzucht zu treiben.

So hast auch du solche, welche an der Lehre der Nikolaiten festhalten.

Tue gleicherweise Buße; wo aber nicht, so werde ich schnell über dich kommen, und werde mit ihnen kämpfen mit dem Schwerte meines Mundes.

Wer Ohren hat, der höre, was der Geist zu den Gemeinden spricht: Wer siegt, dem werde ich von dem verborgenen Manna geben, und werde ihm einen weißen Stein geben, und auf den Stein einen neuen Namen geschrieben, den niemand kennt, als wer ihn empfängt.

Thyatira - Die korrupte Versammlung

(Apostelgeschichte 16,11-15)

Und dem Engel der Gemeinde zu Thyatira schreibe: Dies spricht der Sohn Gottes, der Augen hat wie Feuerflammen, und dessen Füße wie Glüherz sind:

Ich kenne deine Werke und deinen Glauben, und deine Liebe und deine Dienstleistung, und deine Geduld, und dass deine letzten Werke mehr sind als die ersten.

Aber ich habe etwas Weniges wider dich: dass du dem Weibe Jezabel, die sich selbst für eine Prophetin ausgibt, gestattest zu lehren und meine Knechte zu verführen, Unzucht zu treiben und von Götzenopfern zu essen.

Ich habe ihr Frist gegeben, dass sie Buße tue; aber sie will sich nicht bekehren von ihrer Unzucht.

Siehe, ich werde sie auf das Krankenbett werfen, und die mit ihr ehebrechen, werden in sehr großer Drangsal sein, wenn sie sich nicht bekehren von ihren Werken.

Und ihre Kinder werde ich durch Todesgericht töten, alle Gemeinden sollen erkennen, dass ich es bin, der Herz und Nieren erforscht, und ich werde einen jeden von euch nach seinen Werken vergelten. Euch aber sage ich,

den übrigen in Thyatira, allen, die nicht an dieser Stelle halten und die Tiefen des Satans, wie sie sagen, nicht erkannt haben: Euch werde ich keine andere Last auferlegen;

jedoch was ihr habt, das bewahret, bis ich komme.

Und dem, der siegt und meine Werke bis an´s Ende bewahrt, werde ich Macht über die Heiden geben,

und er wird sie mit eisernem Stabe leiten, und wie Töpfergeschirr werden sie zertrümmert werden,

so wie auch ich es von meinem Vater empfangen habe; und ich werde ihm den Morgenstern geben.
