(Numbers 1:1–4)

After the blood of the guilty was shed, the Lord said to Moses, and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest:

“Number the entire sum of the sons of Israel, from twenty years and above, by their houses and kinships, all who are able to go forth to war.”

And so, Moses and Eleazar the priest, who were in the plains of Moab, above the Jordan, opposite Jericho, spoke to those who were

from twenty years and above, just as the Lord had commanded. And this is their number:

The Tribe of Reuben

Ruben, the firstborn of Israel; his son, Hanoch, from whom is the family of the Hanochites; and Pallu, from whom is the family of the Palluites;

and Hezron, from whom is the family of the Hezronites; and Carmi, from whom is the family of the Carmites.

These are the families of the stock of Ruben, whose number was found to be forty-three thousand and seven hundred thirty.

The son of Phallu: Eliab;

his sons, Nemuel and Dathan and Abiram. These are Dathan and Abiram, the leaders of the people, who rose up against Moses and Aaron in the sedition at Korah, when they rebelled against the Lord.

And the earth, opening its mouth, devoured Korah, with many others dying, when the fire burned two hundred fifty men. And a great miracle was wrought,

so that, when Korah perished, his sons did not perish.

The Tribe of Simeon

The sons of Simeon, by their kinships: Nemuel, from him is the family of the Nemuelites; Jamin, from him is the family of the Jaminites; Jachin, from him is the family of the Jachinites;

Sohar, from him is the family of the Soharites; Shaul, from him is the family of the Shaulites.

These are the families of the stock of Simeon, whose entire number was twenty-two thousand two hundred.

The Tribe of Gad

The sons of Gad, by their kinships: Zephon, from him is the family of the Zephonites; Haggi, from him is the family of the Haggites; Shuni, from him is the family of the Shunites;

Ozni, from him is the family of the Oznites; Eri, from him is the family of the Erites;

Arod, from him is the family of the Arodites; Areli, from him is the family of the Arelites.

These are the families of Gad, whose entire number was forty thousand five hundred.

The Tribe of Judah

The sons of Judah: Er and Onan, who both died in the land of Canaan.

And these were the sons of Judah, by their kinships: Shelah, from whom is the family of the Shelahites; Perez, from whom is the family of the Perezites; Zerah, from whom is the family of the Zerahites.

Moreover, the sons of Phares were: Hezron, from whom is the family of the Hezronites; and Hamul, from whom is the family of the Hamulites.

These are the families of Judah, whose entire number was seventy-six thousand five hundred.

The Tribe of Issachar

The sons of Issachar, by their kinships: Tola from whom is the family of the Tolaites; Puvah, from whom is the family of the Puvahites;

Jashub, from whom is the family of the Jashubites; Shimron, from whom is the family of the Shimronites.

These are the kinships of Issachar, whose number was sixty-four thousand three hundred.

The Tribe of Zebulun

The sons of Zebulon by their kinships: Sered, from whom is the family of the Seredites; Elon, from whom is the family of the Elonites; Jahleel, from whom is the family of the Jahleelites.

These are the kinships of Zebulun, whose number was sixty thousand five hundred.

The Tribe of Manasseh

The sons of Joseph by their kinships: Manasseh and Ephraim.

From Manasseh was born Machir, from whom is the family of the Machirites. Machir conceived Gilead, from whom is the family of the Gileadites.

Gilead had sons: Jezer, from whom is the family of the Jezerites; and Helek, from whom is the family of the Helekites;

and Asriel, from whom is the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, from whom is the family of the Shechemites;

and Shemida, from whom is the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, from whom is the family of the Hepherites.

Now Hepher was the father of Zelophehad, who had no sons, but only daughters, whose names are these: Mahlah, and Noa, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

These are the families of Manasseh, and their number was fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

The Tribe of Ephraim

Now the sons of Ephraim by their kinships were these: Shuthelah, from whom is the family of the Shuthelahites; Becher, from whom is the family of the Becherites; Tahan, from whom is the family of the Tahanites.

Furthermore, the son of Shuthelah was Eran, from whom is the family of the Eranites.

These are the kinships of the sons of Ephraim, whose number was thirty-two thousand five hundred.

The Tribe of Benjamin

These are the sons of Joseph by their families: the sons of Benjamin in their kinships: Bela, from whom is the family of the Belaites; Ashbel, from whom is the family of the Ashbelites; Ahiram, from whom is the family of the Ahiramites;

Shupham, from whom is the family of the Shuphamites; Hupham, from whom is the family of the Huphamites.

The sons of Bela: Arad and Naaman. From Arad, the family of the Aradites; from Naaman, the family of the Naamanites.

These are the sons of Benjamin by their kinships, whose number was forty-five thousand six hundred.

The Tribe of Dan

The sons of Dan by their kinships: Shuham, from whom is the family of the Shuhamites. These are the kinships of Dan by their families.

All these were Shuhamites, whose number was sixty-four thousand four hundred.

The Tribe of Asher

The sons of Asher by their kinships: Imnah, from whom is the family of the Imnahites; Ishvi, from whom is the family of the Ishvites; Beriah, from whom is the family of the Beriahites.

The sons of Beriah: Heber, from whom is the family of the Heberites; and Malchiel, from whom is the family of the Malchielites.

Now the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.

These are the kinships of the sons of Asher, and their number was fifty-three thousand four hundred.

The Tribe of Naphtali

The sons of Naphtali by their kinships: Jahzeel, from whom is the family of the Jahzeelites; Guni, from whom is the family of the Gunites;

Jezer, from whom is the family of the Jezerites; Shillem, from whom is the family of the Shillemites.

These are the kinships of the sons of Naphtali by their families, whose number was forty-five thousand four hundred.

This is the sum of the sons of Israel, who were counted: six hundred thousand and one thousand seven hundred thirty.

Inheritance by Lot

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

“The land shall be divided to these, as their possessions, according to the number of their names.

To the greater number you shall give a greater portion, and to the lesser number, a lesser portion. To each one, just as they have now been counted, a possession shall be delivered.

Yet only in so far as the land is divided by lot to a tribe and to families.

Whatever the lot will happen to be, it shall be accepted, either by the greater, or by the lesser.

The Levites Numbered

Likewise, this is the number of the sons of Levi by their families: Gershon, from whom is the family of the Gershonites; Kohath, from whom is the family of the Kohathites; Merari, from whom is the family of the Merarites.

These are the families of Levi: The family of Libni, the family of Hebroni, the family of Mahli, the family of Mushi, the family of Korah. Yet truly, Kohath conceived Amram,

who had a wife, Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to him in Egypt. She bore, to her husband Amram: sons, Aaron and Moses, as well as their sister, Miriam.

From Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, and Eleazar and Ithamar.

Of these, Nadab and Abihu died, when they had offered strange fire before the Lord.

And these were all who were numbered: twenty-three thousand of the male gender, from one month and above. For they were not counted among the sons of Israel, neither was a possession given to them with the others.

Only Caleb and Joshua Remain

This is the number of the sons of Israel, who were enrolled by Moses and by Eleazar the priest, in the plains of Moab, above the Jordan, opposite Jericho.

Among these, not one of them was numbered before, by Moses and Aaron in the desert of Sinai.

For the Lord had foretold that all would die in the wilderness. And not one of them remained, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Die zweite Volkszählung in Israel

(4. Mose 1,1-4)

Als nun das Blut der Schuldigen vergossen war, sprach der Herr zu Moses und Eleazar, dem Sohne Aarons, dem Priester:

Zählet die Gesamtzahl der Söhne Israels, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, Haus um Haus, und Geschlecht um Geschlecht, alle, welche in den Krieg ziehen können.

Und Moses und Eleazar, der Priester, redeten in den Ebenen von Moab am Jordan, Jericho gegenüber, zu denen, welche

zwanzig Jahre und darüber alt waren, wie der Herr befohlen hatte, und dies ist ihre Zahl:

Ruben, der Erstgeborne von Israel. Dessen Sohn war Henoch, von welchem die Familie der Henochiter: Phallu, von welchem die Familie der Phalluiter;

Hesron, von welchem die Familie der Hesroniter; und Charmi, von welchem die Familie der Charmiter herstammt.

Das sind die Familien vom Stamme Ruben; ihre Zahl betrug dreiundvierzigtausend siebenhundert und dreißig.

Der Sohn Phallus war Eliab.

Eliabs Söhne waren Namuel, Dathan, und Abiron. Das sind jene Dathan und Abiron, Fürsten des Volkes, die sich gegen Moses und Aaron im Aufruhre Kores erhoben, als sie sich gegen den Herrn auflehnten;

worauf die Erde ihren Mund auftat und Kore verschlang, und sehr viele starben, als das Feuer zweihundert fünfzig Männer verzehrte. Da geschah ein großes Wunder,

dass, während Kore umkam, seine Söhne nicht umkamen.

Die Söhne Simeons waren nach ihren Familien: Namuel, von welchem die Familie der Namueliter; Jamin, von welchem die Familie der Jaminiter; Jachin, von welchem die Familie der Jachiniter;

Zare, von welchem die Familie der Zareiter; Saul, von welchem die Familie der Sauliter herstammt.

Das sind die Familien vom Stämme Simeon; ihre Gesamtzahl war zweiundzwanzigtausend zweihundert.

Die Söhne Gads waren nach ihren Familien: Sephon, von welchem die Familie der Sephoniter; Aggi, von welchem die Familie der Aggiter; Suni, von welchem die Familie der Suniter;

Ozni, von welchem die Familie der Ozniter; Her, von welchem die Familie der Heriter;

Arod, von welchem die Familie der Aroditer: Ariel, von welchem die Familie der Arieliter herstammt.

Das sind die Familien Gads; ihre Gesamtzahl war vierzigtausend fünfhundert.

Die Söhne Judas waren Her und Onan, die beide im Lande Chanaan starben.

Und die Söhne Judas waren nach ihren Geschlechtern: Sela, von welchem die Familie der Selaiter; Phares, von welchem die Familie der Pharesiter; Zare, von welchem die Familie der Zareiter herstammt.

Und die Söhne Phares waren: Hesron, von welchem die Familie der Hesroniter; und Hamul, von welchem die Familie der Hamuliter herstammt.

Das sind die Familien Judas, deren Gesamtzahl sechsundsiebzigtausend fünfhundert war.

Die Söhne Issachars waren nach ihren Familien: Thola, von welchem die Familie der Tholaiter; Phua, von welchem die Familie der Phuaiter;

Jasub, von welchem die Familie der Jasubiter; Semran, von welchem die Familie der Semraniter herstammt.

Das sind die Geschlechter Issachars, deren Zahl vierundsechzigtausend dreihundert war.

Die Söhne Zabulons waren nach ihren Geschlechtern: Sared, von welchem die Familie der Sarediter; Elon, von welchem die Familie der Eloniter; Jalel, von welchem die Familie der Jaleliter herstammt.

Das sind die Geschlechter Zabulons, ihre Zahl war sechzigtausend fünfhundert.

Die Söhne Josephs waren nach ihren Geschlechtern: Manasse und Ephraim.

Von Manasse stammte Machir ab, von welchem die Familie der Machiriter sich herleitet. Machir zeugte Galaad, von welchem das Geschlecht der Galaaditer stammt.

Die Söhne Galaads waren: Jezer, von welchem die Familie der Jezeriter; Helek, von welchem die Familie der Helekiter;

Asriel, von welchem die Familie der Asrieliter; Sechem, von welchem die Familie der Sechemiter;

Semida, von welchem die Familie der Semidaiter; und Hepher, von welchem die Familie der Hepheriter stammt.

Aber Hepher war der Vater Salphaads, der keine Söhne, sondern nur Töchter hatte, und dies sind ihre Namen: Maala, Noa, Hegla, Melcha und Thersa.

Das sind die Familien Manasses, deren Anzahl zweiundfünfzigtausend siebenhundert war.

Die Söhne Ephraims aber waren nach ihren Geschlechtern diese: Suthala, von welchem die Familie der Suthalaiter; Becher, von welchem die Familie der Becheriter; Theben, von welchem die Familie der Thebeniter stammt.

Und der Sohn Suthalas war Heran, von welchem die Familie der Heraniter herstammt.

Das sind die Geschlechter der Söhne Ephraims, ihre Zahl war zweiunddreißigtausend fünfhundert.

Das sind die Söhne Josephs nach ihren Familien. Die Söhne Benjamins nach ihren Geschlechtern waren: Bela, von welchem die Familie der Belaiter; Asbel, von welchem die Familie der Asbeliter; Ahiram, von welchem die Familie der Ahiramiter;

Supham, von welchem die Familie der Suphamiter; Hupham, von welchem die Familie der Huphamiter stammt.

Die Söhne Belas waren: Hered und Noeman. Von Hered stammt die Familie der Herediter; von Noeman die Familie der Noemaniter.

Das sind die Söhne Benjamins nach ihren Geschlechtern, deren Zahl fünfundvierzigtausend sechshundert war.

Die Söhne Dans nach ihren Geschlechtern waren: Suham, von welchem die Familie der Suhamiter herstammt. Das sind die Geschlechter Dans nach ihren Familien.

Alle waren Suhamiter, und ihre Zahl vierundsechzigtausend vierhundert.

Die Söhne Asers nach ihren Geschlechtern waren: Jemna, von welchem die Familie der Jemnaiter; Jessui, von welchem die Familie der Jessuiter; Brie, von welchem die Familie der Brieiter stammt.

Die Söhne Bries waren: Heber, von welchem die Familie der Heberiter; und Melchiel, von welchem die Familie der Melchieliter herstammt.

Der Name der Tochter Asers aber war Sara.

Das sind die Geschlechter der Söhne Asers, und ihre Zahl war dreiundfünfzigtausend vierhundert.

Die Söhne Nephthalis waren nach ihren Geschlechtern: Jesiel, von welchem die Familie der Jesieliter; Guni, von welchem die Familie der Guniter;

Jeser, von welchem die Familie der Jeseriter; Sellem, von welchem die Familie der Sellemiter herstammt.

Das sind die Geschlechter der Söhne Nephthalis nach ihren Familien; ihre Zahl war fünfundvierzigtausend vierhundert.

Dies ist die Gesamtzahl der Söhne Israels, die gezählt wurden: sechshundert eintausend siebenhundert und dreißig.

Und der Herr redete zu Moses und sprach:

Unter diesen soll das Land nach der Zahl ihrer Namen als ihr Besitz verteilt werden.

Denen, die zahlreicher sind, wirst du einen größeren, und denen, die weniger zahlreich sind, einen kleineren Teil geben; jedem soll nach der Zahl, wie sie jetzt gezählt worden sind, ein Erbbesitz zugewiesen werden.

doch so, dass das Land unter den Stämmen und Familien nach dem Lose verteilt wird.

Was durch das Los zufällt, sollen die, welche zahlreich sind, wie die, welche weniger zahlreich sind, als ihren Anteil erhalten.

Und dies ist die Zahl der Söhne Levis nach ihren Familien: Gerson, von welchem die Familie der Gersoniter; Kaath, von welchem die Familie der Kaathiter; Merari, von welchem die Familie der Merariter stammt.

Dies sind die Familien Levis: Die Familie Lobni, die Familie Hebroni, die Familie Moholi, die Familie Musi, die Familie Kore. Kaath aber zeugte den Amram,

der Jochabed, die Tochter Levis, zum Weibe hatte, welche diesem in Ägypten geboren ward; diese gebar ihrem Manne Amram die Söhne Aaron und Moses und deren Schwester Maria.

Von Aaron stammte Nadab, Abiu, Eleazar, und Ithamar ab;

von diesen starben Nadab und Abiu, als sie fremdes Feuer vor den Herrn brachten.

Alle also, welche gezählt wurden, waren zusammen dreiundzwanzigtausend männlichen Geschlechtes von einem Monate an und darüber; denn sie wurden nicht unter den Söhnen Israels gezählt und es ward ihnen kein Erbbesitz mit den übrigen gegeben.

Das ist die Zahl der Söhne Israels, welche von Moses und Eleazar, dem Priester, in den Ebenen Moabs am Jordan, Jericho gegenüber, aufgeschrieben wurden.

Unter diesen war keiner mehr von denen, welche vorher von Moses und Aaron in der Wüste Sinai gezählt waren;

denn der Herr hatte vorherverkündet, dass alle in der Wüste sterben würden. So war denn keiner von ihnen übriggeblieben, als Kaleb, der Sohn Jephones, und Josue, der Sohn Nuns.
