- Kapitel 13 -

The principles of separation

Now on that day, they read from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it, there was found written that the Ammonites and the Moabites must not enter the church of God, even for all time,

because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, and they hired Balaam against them, to curse them. But our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Now it happened that, when they had heard the law, they separated every foreigner from Israel.

The reforms of Nehemiah

And Eliashib, the priest, was over this task; he had been given charge of the treasury of the house of our God, and he was a close relative of Tobiah.(a)

Then he made for himself a large storeroom, and in that place, there was laid before him gifts, and frankincense, and vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, the portions of the Levites, and of the singing men, and of the gatekeepers, and the first-fruits of the priests.

But during all this, I was not in Jerusalem, because in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, the king of Babylon, I went to the king, and at the end of some days, I petitioned the king.

And I went to Jerusalem, and I understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, such that he would make him a storeroom in the vestibules of the house of God.

And it seemed to me very evil. And I cast the vessels of the house of Tobiah outside of the storeroom.

And I gave instructions, and they cleansed again the storeroom. And I brought back, into that place, the vessels of the house of God, the sacrifice, and the frankincense.

And I realized that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, and that each one had fled into his own region, from the Levites, and from the singing men, and from those who were ministering.

And I brought the case before the magistrates, and I said, “Why have we forsaken the house of God?” And I gathered them together, and I caused them to stand at their stations.

And all of Judah brought the tithes of the grain, and the wine, and the oil into the storehouses.

And we appointed over the storehouses, Shelemiah, the priest, and Zadok, the scribe, and Pedaiah from the Levites, and next to them Hanan, the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah. For they had proven to be faithful. And so the portions of their brothers were entrusted to them.

Remember me, O my God, because of this, and may you not wipe away my acts of compassion, which I have done for the house of my God and for his ceremonies.

In those days, I saw, in Judah, some who were treading the presses on the Sabbath, and who were carrying sheaves, and placing on donkeys burdens of wine, and of grapes, and of figs, and all manner of burdens, and who were bringing these into Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath. And I contended with them, so that they would sell on a day when it was permitted to sell.

And some Tyrians dwelt within, who were bringing fish and all kinds of items for sale. And they were selling on the Sabbaths to the sons of Judah in Jerusalem.

And I put the nobles of Judah under oath, and I said to them: “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?

Did not our fathers do these things, and so our God brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? And you are adding more wrath upon Israel by violating the Sabbath!”

And it happened that, when the gates of Jerusalem had rested on the day of the Sabbath, I spoke, and they closed the gates. And I instructed that they should not open them until after the Sabbath. And I appointed some of my servants over the gates, so that no one would carry in a burden on the day of the Sabbath.

And so the merchants and those who sold all kinds of items remained just outside of Jerusalem, once and again.

And I contended with them, and I said to them: “Why are you remaining just beyond the wall? If you do this again, I will send hands upon you.” And so, from that time, they no longer came on the Sabbath.

I also spoke to the Levites, so that they would be cleansed, and would arrive to guard the gates and to sanctify the day of the Sabbath. Because of this also, O my God, remember me and spare me, in accord with the multitude of your mercies.

But also in those days, I saw some Jews taking wives from the Ashdodites, and the Ammonites, and the Moabites.

And their sons spoke partly in the speech of Ashdod, and they did not know how to speak the Jewish language, and they were speaking according to the language of one people or another.

And I put them under oath, and I cursed them. And I struck some of their men, and I shaved off their hair, and I made them swear to God that they would not give their daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for their sons, nor for themselves, saying:

“Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin in this kind of thing? And certainly, among many nations, there was no king similar to him, and he was beloved of his God, and God set him as king over all of Israel. And yet foreign women led even him into sin!

So how could we disobey and do all this great evil, so that we would transgress against our God, and take foreign wives?”

Now one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the high priest, was a son-in-law to Sanballat, a Horonite, and I made him flee from me.

O Lord, my God, remember against those who defile the priesthood and the law of the priests and the Levites!

And so I cleansed them from all foreigners, and I established the orders of the priests and the Levites, each one in his ministry.

O my God, remember me also, for good, because of the offering of wood, at the appointed times, and because of the first-fruits. Amen.

Die Grundsätze der Abtrennung

An jenem Tage ward vor den Ohren des Volkes aus dem Buche Moses gelesen und man fand darin geschrieben, dass kein Ammoniter oder Moabiter jemals in die Gemeinde Gottes aufgenommen werden sollte,

deshalb, weil sie den Söhnen Israels nicht mit Brot und Wasser entgegengekommen waren und Balaam wider jene gedungen hatten, sie zu verfluchen, aber unser Gott wandte den Fluch in Segen um.

Es begab sich aber, da sie das Gesetz gehört hatten, sonderten sie alle Fremdlinge von Israel ab.

Die Reformen des Nehemia

Vordem war Eliasib, der Priester, der Vorgesetzte über die Vorratskammer des Hauses unseres Gottes, ein naher Verwandter des Tobias.

Dieser hatte ihm eine große Vorratskammer eingerichtet, in die man vor seiner Zeit die Gaben, den Weihrauch, die Geräte, den Zehnten von Getreide, Wein und Öl, die Anteile der Leviten und Sänger und Türhüter und die Erstlinge für die Priester niederzulegen pflegte.

Während alles dies geschah, war ich nicht zu Jerusalem; denn im zweiunddreißigsten Jahre des Artaxerxes, des Königs von Babylon, war ich zu dem Könige gegangen. Doch nach Verlauf gewisser Zeit erbat ich es mir von dem Könige

und kam nach Jerusalem. Da merkte ich den Frevel, den Eliasib um Tobias willen begangen hatte, indem er ihm eine Vorratskammer in den Vorhöfen des Hauses Gottes einrichtete.

Dieser Frevel schien mir groß. Ich warf alles Hausgeräte des Tobias hinaus aus der Vorratskammer

und gab Befehl, die Vorratskammern zu reinigen, und ich brachte die Geräte des Hauses Gottes, das Speiseopfer und den Weihrauch, dahin zurück.

Auch erfuhr ich, dass man den Leviten nicht ihren Anteil gegeben hatte und dass die Leviten und die Sänger und die, welche Dienst tun sollten, entflohen waren, ein jeder in seine Landmark.

Da nahm ich mich der Sache gegen die Vorsteher an und sprach: Warum haben wir das Haus Gottes verlassen? Und ich versammelte sie und stellte sie an ihre Plätze.

Und ganz Juda brachte den Zehnten vom Getreide, Wein und Öl in die Vorratskammern.

Und wir setzten über die Vorratskammern den Priester Selemia und den Schreiber Sadok und von den Leviten Phadaja und ihnen zur Seite Hanan, den Sohn Zachurs, eines Sohnes Mathanias; denn diese waren als treu bewährt, und ihnen ward das Amt, die Anteile unter ihre Brüder zu verteilen, anvertraut.

Gedenke mir dies mein Gott! und tilge meine Erbarmungen nicht aus, die ich am Hause meines Gottes und in seinem Dienste geübt habe.

In jener Zeit sah ich in Juda solche, welche am Sabbate die Kelter traten, Garben trugen und Esel mit Wein, Trauben, Feigen und allerlei Lasten beluden und diese am Sabbatstage nach Jerusalem brachten. Da warnte ich sie, sie sollten an dem Tage verkaufen, wo es erlaubt ist zu verkaufen.

Auch wohnten Tyrier darin, diese brachten Fische und Waren aller Art hinein und verkauften sie am Sabbate an die Söhne Judas in Jerusalem.

Deshalb schalt ich die Vornehmen von Juda und sprach zu ihnen: Was ist das für eine schlimme Sache, die ihr tut, dass ihr den Tag des Sabbats entheiligt?

Haben unsere Väter nicht ebendies getan und hat nicht unser Gott darauf all dies Unglück über uns und über diese Stadt gebracht? Und ihr steigert den Zorn über Israel noch, indem ihr den Sabbat entheiligt?

Und wenn die Tore zu Jerusalem am Tage des Sabbats ruhen sollten, gebot ich, dass man die Pforten schließen solle, und befahl, sie nicht eher zu öffnen, als bis nach dem Sabbate. Und ich stellte einige von meinen Knechten an die Tore, damit niemand am Tage des Sabbats eine Last hineinbrächte.

Da blieben die Krämer und die Verkäufer von aller Art Waren draußen vor Jerusalem, einmal und ein zweites Mal.

Doch ich warnte sie und sprach zu ihnen: Warum bleibt ihr an der Mauer? Wenn ihr dies noch einmal tut, so werde ich Hand an euch legen. So kamen sie denn von der Zeit an nicht mehr am Sabbate.

Auch wies ich die Leviten an, sich rein zu halten und zur Wache an den Toren zu kommen zur Heilighaltung des Sabbats. Auch dies alles gedenke mir, mein Gott! und schone meiner nach der Fülle deiner Erbarmungen.

In jener Zeit sah ich auch Juden, welche azotische, ammonitische und moabitische Frauen genommen hatten.

Ihre Kinder redeten zur Hälfte azotisch und konnten nicht jüdisch sprechen, sondern redeten nach der Sprache des einen oder des andern Volkes.

Da schalt ich sie und schleuderte den Fluch über sie und schlug einige von ihnen und raufte ihnen die Haare aus und beschwor sie bei Gott, ihre Töchter den Söhnen derselben nicht zu geben und deren Töchter nicht für ihre Söhne, noch für sich selbst zu nehmen, und ich sprach:

Hat nicht durch eine solche Sache Salomon, der König von Israel, gesündigt? Und doch war unter den vielen Völkern kein ihm ähnlicher König; und diesen, der der Liebling seines Gottes war und den Gott zum König über ganz Israel eingesetzt hatte, verleiteten dennoch die ausländischen Frauen zur Sünde.

Sollten denn auch wir ungehorsam sein und all dies große Übel begehen und uns gegen unsern Gott vergehen und fremde Frauen nehmen?

Einer aber von den Söhnen Jojadas, des Sohnes Eliasibs, des Hohenpriesters, war Tochtermann Sanaballats, des Horoniters, diesen trieb ich aus meiner Nähe fort.

Gedenke es ihnen, Herr, mein Gott! die das Priestertum beflecken und das den Priestern und Leviten bestimmte Recht.

Und ich reinigte sie von allen Fremden und bestimmte die Dienstordnungen der Priester und Leviten, einen jeden für seine Obliegenheit

und für die Darbringung des Holzes zu den bestimmten Zeiten und für die Erstlinge. Gedenke meiner, o mein Gott, zum Guten! Amen.
