- Kapitel 20 -

And so all the sons of Israel went out like one man, from Dan to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, and they gathered together, before the Lord, at Mizpah.

And all the chiefs of the people, and every tribe of Israel, convened as an assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand foot soldiers for battle.

(But it was not hidden from the sons of Benjamin that the sons of Israel had ascended to Mizpah.) And the Levite, the husband of the woman who was killed, being questioned as to how so great a crime had been perpetrated,

responded: “I went to Gibeah of Benjamin, with my wife, and I diverted to that place.

And behold, the men of that city, at night, surrounded the house in which I was staying, intending to kill me. And they abused my wife with such an incredible fury of lust that in the end she died.

And taking her up, I cut her into pieces, and I sent the parts into all the borders of your possession. For never before was such a nefarious crime, and so great a sin, committed in Israel.

You are all present here, O sons of Israel. Discern what you ought to do.”

And all the people, standing, responded as if with the word of one man: “We shall not return to our own tents, nor shall anyone enter into his own house.

But this we shall do in common against Gibeah:

We shall select ten men out of one hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and one hundred out of one thousand, and one thousand out of ten thousand, so that they may transport supplies for the army, and so that we will be able to fight against Gibeah of Benjamin, and to repay it for its crime as it deserves.”

And all of Israel convened against the city, like one man, with one mind and one counsel.

And they sent messengers to the entire tribe of Benjamin, who said: “Why has so great a wickedness been found among you?

Deliver the men of Gibeah, who have perpetrated this deplorable act, so that they may die, and so that the evil may be taken away from Israel.” And they were not willing to listen to the command of their brothers, the sons of Israel.

Instead, out of all the cities that were their lot, they convened at Gibeah, so that they might bring them assistance, and so that they might contend against the entire people of Israel.

And there were found from Benjamin twenty-five thousand who drew the sword, aside from the inhabitants of Gibeah,

who were seven hundred very strong men, fighting with the left hand as well as with the right hand, and casting stones from a sling so accurately that they were able to strike even a hair, and the path of the stone would by no means miss to either side.

Then too, among the men of Israel apart from the sons of Benjamin, there were found four hundred thousand who drew the sword and who were prepared for battle.

Civil War against Benjamin

And they rose up and went to the house of God, that is, to Shiloh. And they consulted God, and they said, “Who shall be, in our army, the first to contend against the sons of Benjamin?” And the Lord responded to them, “Let Judah be your leader.”

And immediately the sons of Israel, rising up in the morning, made camp near Gibeah.

And setting out from there to fight against Benjamin, they began to assault the city.

And the sons of Benjamin, departing from Gibeah, slew twenty-two thousand men from the sons of Israel, on that day.

Again the sons of Israel, trusting in both strength and number, set their troops in order, in the same place where they had contended before.(a)

But first they also went up and wept before the Lord, even until night. And they consulted him and said, “Should I continue to go forth, so as to contend against the sons of Benjamin, my brothers, or not?” And he responded to them, “Ascend against them, and undertake the struggle.”

And when the sons of Israel had continued to do battle against the sons of Benjamin on the next day,

the sons of Benjamin burst forth from the gates of Gibeah. And meeting them, they made such a frenzied slaughter against them that they struck down eighteen thousand men who drew the sword.

As a result, all the sons of Israel went to the house of God, and sitting down, they wept before the Lord. And they fasted that day until evening, and they offered to him holocausts and victims of peace offerings.

And they inquired about their state. At that time, the ark of the covenant of the Lord was in that place.

And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, was the first ruler of the house. And so, they consulted the Lord, and they said, “Should we continue to go forth in battle against the sons of Benjamin, our brothers, or should we cease?” And the Lord said to them: “Ascend. For tomorrow, I will deliver them into your hands.”

And the sons of Israel stationed ambushes around the city of Gibeah.

And they brought out their army against Benjamin a third time, just as they had done on the first and second times.

But the sons of Benjamin again burst forth boldly from the city. And since their enemies were fleeing, they pursued them a long way, so that they might wound or kill some of them, just as they had done on the first and second days. And they turned their backs along two paths, one bringing them toward Bethel, and the other toward Gibeah. And they struck down about thirty men.

For they thought that they were falling back as they had done before. But instead, skillfully feigning flight, they undertook a plan to draw them away from the city, and by seeming to flee, to lead them along the above stated paths.

And so all the sons of Israel, rising up from their positions, set their troops in order, in the place which is called Baaltamar. Likewise, the ambushes that encircled the city began, little by little, to reveal themselves,

and to advance upon the western part of the city. Moreover, another ten thousand men from all of Israel were provoking a conflict with the inhabitants of the city. And the war grew heavy against the sons of Benjamin. And they did not realize that, on all sides of them, death was imminent.

And the Lord struck them down in the sight of the sons of Israel, and they put to death, on that day, twenty-five thousand of them, along with one hundred men, all warriors and those who drew the sword.

But the sons of Benjamin, when they had seen themselves to be the weaker, began to flee. And the sons of Israel discerning this, gave them room to flee, so that they might arrive at the ambushes that were prepared, which they had positioned near the city.

And after they had risen up suddenly from hiding, and those of Benjamin had turned their backs to those who cut them down, they entered the city, and they struck it with the edge of the sword.

Now the sons of Israel had given a sign to those whom they had stationed in ambushes, so that, after they had seized the city, they would light a fire, and by the smoke ascending on high, they would show that the city was captured.

And then, the sons of Israel discerned this sign during the battle (for the sons of Benjamin had thought that they fled, and they pursued them forcefully, cutting down thirty men from their army).

And they saw something like a pillar of smoke ascending from the city. Likewise, Benjamin, looking back, discerned that the city was captured, for the flames were being carried on high.

And those who before had pretended to flee, turning their faces, withstood them more strongly. And when the sons of Benjamin had seen this, they turned their backs in flight,

and they began to go toward the way of the desert, with the adversary pursuing them to that place also. Moreover, those who had set fire to the city also met them.

And so it happened that they were cut down on both sides by the enemies, nor was there any respite for the dying. They were killed and struck down on the eastern side of the city of Gibeah.

Now those who were put to death in the same place were eighteen thousand men, all very robust fighters.

And when those who remained of Benjamin had seen this, they fled into the wilderness. And they were traveling toward the rock which is called Rimmon. In that flight also, among those who were scattering in different directions, they slew five thousand men. And though they scattered all the more, they continued to pursue them, and then they put to death another two thousand.

And so it happened that all of those who were slain from Benjamin, in various places, were twenty-five thousand fighters, very willing to go to war.

And so there remained from the entire number of Benjamin six hundred men who were able to escape and to flee into the wilderness. And they settled at the rock of Rimmon, for four months.

But the sons of Israel, returning, had struck with the sword all that remained in the city, from men even to cattle. And all the cities and villages of Benjamin were consumed with devouring flames.

Israels Krieg mit den Benjamiten

Da zogen alle Söhne Israels aus und versammelten sich allzumal, wie ein einziger Mann, von Dan bis Bersabee, dazu das Land Galaad, vor dem Herrn in Maspha.

Und alle Fürsten des Volkes und alle Stämme Israels kamen zur Versammlung des Volkes Gottes zusammen, vierhunderttausend Streitbare zu Fuß.

(Den Söhnen Benjamins aber blieb es nicht verborgen, dass die Söhne Israels nach Maspha hinaufgezogen waren.) Und der Levit, der Mann des ermordeten Weibes, befragt, wie eine so schändliche Tat geschehen wäre,

antwortete: Ich kam mit meinem Weibe nach Gabaa im Stamme Benjamin und kehrte dort ein.

Da, siehe, umgaben die Leute dieser Stadt des Nachts das Haus, in dem ich weilte, und wollten mich töten und schändeten, rasend vor Lust, auf unglaubliche Weise mein Weib, so dass es zuletzt starb.

Da nahm ich sie, schnitt sie in Stücke und sandte die Stücke in alle Gaue eures Landes herum, denn niemals ist eine so große Missetat und eine so furchtbare Verruchtheit in Israel verübt worden.

Ihr seid hier alle zugegen, ihr Söhne Israels, so entscheidet, was ihr tun sollt.

Da erhob sich das ganze Volk und sprach wie mit einer Stimme: Wir werden nicht in unsere Zelte zurückkehren, und keiner soll in sein Haus gehen,

sondern dies wollen wir gemeinsam gegen Gabaa vornehmen:

Zehn Männer mögen von je hundert aus allen Stämmen Israels, und hundert aus je tausend, und tausend aus je zehntausend ausgewählt werden, dass sie für das Heer Lebensmittel herbeischaffen, damit wir gegen Gabaa (im Stamme) Benjamin kämpfen und ihm vergelten, was dies für seine Schandtat verdient.

Da versammelte sich ganz Israel bei der Stadt, wie ein einziger Mann, einer Gesinnung und eines Entschlusses.

Und sie sandten Boten an den ganzen Stamm Benjamin, um zu sagen: Warum ist eine solche Verruchtheit unter euch gefunden worden?

Liefert die Männer von Gabaa aus, welche diese Schandtat begangen haben, dass sie sterben und das Böse aus Israel weggeschafft werde. Doch sie wollten dem Befehle ihrer Brüder, der Söhne Israels, nicht gehorchen,

sondern sammelten sich aus allen Städten, welche in ihrem Anteile lagen, in Gabaa, um diesen Hilfe zu bringen und gegen das ganze Volk Israel zu kämpfen.

Und es fanden sich fünfundzwanzigtausend von Benjamin ein, welche das Schwert führten, ungerechnet die Bewohner von Gabaa,

deren siebenhundert waren, sehr tapfere Männer, die mit der linken wie mit der rechten Hand kämpften und mit ihren Schleudern die Steine so sicher warfen, dass sie auch ein Haar treffen konnten und der Wurf des Steines nie auf die andere Seite abirrte.

Aus Israel fanden sich, ohne die Söhne Benjamins, vierhunderttausend Mann ein, die das Schwert führten und kriegstüchtig waren.

Diese machten sich auf und kamen zum Hause Gottes, das ist nach Silo, und befragten Gott und sprachen: Wer soll in unserm Kriegsheere im Kampfe wider die Söhne Benjamins der Anführer sein? Der Herr antwortete ihnen: Juda soll euer Führer sein!

Da machten sich die Söhne Israels alsbald des Morgens auf und lagerten sich bei Gabaa.

Von da aus rückten dann sie weiter zum Kampfe gegen Benjamin vor und begannen die Stadt anzugreifen.

Die Söhne Benjamins aber machten aus Gabaa einen Ausfall und töteten an jenem Tage zweiundzwanzigtausend Mann von den Söhnen Israels.

Doch die Söhne Israels fassten wieder Mut wegen ihrer Stärke und Zahl und stellten sich an demselben Orte, wo sie vordem gekämpft, in Schlachtordnung auf.

Zuvor aber waren sie hinaufgezogen und hatten vor dem Herrn bis in die Nacht geweint und ihn befragt und gesprochen: Soll ich noch fürder zum Kampfe gegen die Söhne Benjamins, meine Brüder, ziehen oder nicht? Er antwortete ihnen: Ziehet hin gegen sie und beginnet den Kampf!

Als nun die Söhne Israels des andern Tages gegen die Söhne Benjamins zum Kampfe auszogen,

brachen die Söhne Benjamins aus den Toren von Gabaa hervor, stürzten sich auf sie und richteten unter ihnen ein solches Blutbad an, dass sie achtzehntausend Krieger erschlugen.

Deshalb begaben sich alle Söhne Israels zum Hause Gottes; dort saßen sie und weinten vor dem Herrn und fasteten an jenem Tage bis zum Abend und brachten ihm Brandopfer und Friedopfer dar

und befragten ihn wegen ihrer Lage. Damals war dort die Lade des Bundes Gottes,

und Phinees, der Sohn Eleazars, des Sohnes Aarons, war Vorsteher des Hauses. Sie befragten also den Herrn und sprachen: Sollen wir nochmals zum Kampfe ausziehen gegen die Söhne Benjamins, unsere Brüder, oder abstehen? Der Herr sprach zu ihnen: Ziehet hin; denn morgen werde ich sie in eure Gewalt geben.

Da nahmen die Söhne Israels eine verdeckte Stellung rings um die Stadt Gabaa ein

und rückten zum dritten Male, wie das erste und zweite Mal, gegen Benjamin heran.

Aber auch die Söhne Benjamins brachen kühn aus der Stadt hervor und setzten ihren Feinden, die vor ihnen flohen, weit nach, so dass sie ihrer, wie am ersten und zweiten Tage, mehrere verwundeten und niederhieben auf den beiden Wegen, auf denen jene nach Bethel und nach Gabaa flohen, und ungefähr dreißig Mann töteten.

Sie meinten nämlich, dass jene, wie sie vorher getan, flohen. Diese aber stellten sich nur so, als flüchteten sie, weil sie den Plan gefasst hatten, sie von der Stadt abzuziehen und durch scheinbare Flucht auf die obengenannten Wege hinzulocken.

Alle Söhne Israels also brachen von ihren Standorten auf und stellten sich in Schlachtordnung an dem Orte, welcher Baalthamar heißt, auf; zugleich fingen die, welche im Hinterhalte in der Umgebung der Stadt aufgestellt waren, an, allmählich hervorzukommen

und auf der Westseite der Stadt vorzugehen. zudem forderten andere zehntausend Mann aus ganz Israel die Bewohner der Stadt zum Kampfe heraus. Und der Kampf wider die Söhne Benjamins ward heißer; aber sie wussten nicht, dass von allen Seiten ihnen das Verderben nahe sei.

So schlug der Herr sie angesichts der Söhne Israels, und diese töteten von ihnen an jenem Tage fünfundzwanzigtausend und hundert Mann, lauter kriegstüchtige und kampfgeübte Männer.

Als aber die Söhne Benjamins sahen, dass sie unterlagen, fingen sie an zu fliehen. Da die Söhne Israels dies sahen, ließen sie ihnen Raum zur Flucht, damit sie zu dem ihnen nahe bei der Stadt gelegten Hinterhalte kämen.

Plötzlich brachen die im Hinterhalte Liegenden hervor, drangen, da Benjamin den Siegern den Rücken kehrte, in die Stadt und schlugen dieselbe mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.

Die Söhne Israels aber hatten mit denen, welche sie in den Hinterhalt gelegt hatten, als Zeichen verabredet, dass sie Feuer anlegen sollten, wenn sie die Stadt eingenommen hätten, damit sie durch den emporsteigenden Rauch zu erkennen gäben, dass die Stadt genommen sei.

Als nun die Söhne Israels, welche in den Kampf verwickelt waren, sich umsahen (denn die Söhne Benjamins meinten, dass sie flüchteten, und verfolgten sie hitziger und erschlugen von ihrem Heere dreißig Mann),

und eine Rauchsäule von der Stadt aufsteigen sahen, blickte auch Benjamin hinter sich und nahm wahr, dass die Stadt eingenommen war und die Flammen emporschlugen.

Da wandten sich die, welche sich zuvor gestellt, als ob sie flüchteten, und leisteten tapferen Widerstand. Als dies die Söhne Benjamins sahen, ergriffen sie die Flucht

und schlugen den Weg zur Wüste ein. Aber ihre Feinde folgten ihnen auch dahin; überdies zogen die, welche die Stadt verbrannt hatten, ihnen entgegen.

Und so geschah es, dass sie von den Feinden auf beiden Seiten niedergehauen wurden, und es war des Gemetzels kein Ende. Sie fielen und wurden niedergestreckt auf der östlichen Seite der Stadt Gabaa.

Die Zahl derer aber, welche an dieser Stelle getötet wurden, betrug achtzehntausend Mann, lauter tapfere Streiter.

Als dies jene sahen, die von Benjamin übriggeblieben waren, flohen sie nach der Wüste zu und kamen bis zu dem Felsen, dessen Namen Remmon ist. Auch hier irrten sie auf der Flucht umher und schlugen verschiedene Wege ein, und es wurden ihrer fünftausend Mann getötet. Und als sie noch weiter flohen, setzten jene ihnen nach und töteten noch andere zweitausend.

So geschah es, dass die Gesamtzahl derer, welche von Benjamin an verschiedenen Orten gefallen waren, fünfundzwanzigtausend Mann betrug, alle kampfestüchtige Krieger.

Und es blieben von der ganzen Zahl Benjamins solche, die in die Wüste fliehen und entkommen konnten, sechshundert Mann übrig; diese blieben vier Monate auf der Felsenhöhe von Remmon.

Die Söhne Israels aber kehrten zurück und erschlugen alles, was in der Stadt übrig war, Menschen und Vieh mit dem Schwerte, und alle Städte und Flecken Benjamins vernichtete verzehrendes Feuer.
