- Kapitel 59 -

(Psalm 14:1–7; Psalm 53:1–6; Romans 3:9–20)

Behold, the hand of the Lord has not been shortened, so that it cannot save, and his ear has not been blocked, so that it cannot hear.

But your iniquities have made a division between you and your God, and your sins have concealed his face from you, so that he would not hear.

For your hands have been polluted by blood, and your fingers by iniquity. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue utters iniquity.

There is no one who calls for justice, and there is no one who judges truly. For they trust in nothing, and they speak emptiness. They have conceived hardship, and they have given birth to iniquity.

They have ruptured the eggs of asps, and they have woven the webs of spiders. Whoever will eat of their eggs will die. For what has been incubated will hatch into a king snake.

Their weavings will not be for clothing, nor will they cover themselves with their handiwork. Their works are useless things, and the work of iniquity is in their hands.

Their feet run to evil, and they rush to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are useless thoughts; devastation and destruction are in their ways.

They have not known the way of peace, and there is no judgment in their steps. Their paths have become crooked for them. Anyone who treads in them knows no peace.

Because of this, judgment is far from us, and justice will not take hold of us. We waited for light, and behold, darkness; we waited for brightness, and we walked in darkness.

We groped for the wall, like one who is blind, and we felt our way, like one without eyes. We stumbled at midday, as if in darkness; and in darkness, as if in death.

We will all roar like bears, and we will sigh like despondent doves. We hoped for judgment, and there is none; for salvation, and it is far from us.

For our iniquities have been multiplied in your sight, and our sins have answered us. For our wickedness is with us, and we have acknowledged our iniquities:

sinning and lying against the Lord. And we have turned away, not so as to go after our God, and so that we were speaking calumny and transgression. We have conceived, and spoken from the heart, words of falsehood.

And judgment has been turned backwards, and justice has stood far away. For truth has fallen down in the street, and fairness was not able to enter.

And the truth has gone into oblivion. And he who withdraws from evil endures plunder. And the Lord saw this, and it seemed evil in his eyes. For there is no judgment.

And he saw that there was no good man. And he was astonished that there was no one to meet him. And his own arm brought salvation to him, and his own justice strengthened him.(a)

He clothed himself with justice as with a breastplate, and with a helmet of salvation upon his head. He put on the vestments of vengeance, and he was covered with zeal as with a cloak.

The Covenant of the Redeemer

This was for vindication, as a repayment of indignation to his adversaries, and as a sudden reversal for his enemies. He will repay the islands in their turn.

And those from the west will fear the name of the Lord, and those from the rising of the sun will fear his glory, when he arrives like a violent river, which the Spirit of the Lord urges on.

And the Redeemer will arrive in Zion, and to those who return from the iniquity within Jacob, says the Lord.

This is my pact with them, says the Lord. My Spirit is within you, and my words, which I have put in your mouth, will not withdraw from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring’s offspring, says the Lord, from this moment, and even forever.(b)

Getrennt von Gott

(Psalm 14,1-7; Psalm 53,1-6; Römer 3,9-20).

Sehet, die Hand des Herrn ist nicht verkürzt, dass er nicht zu retten vermöchte, und nicht taub sein Ohr, dass er nicht hörte;

aber eure Missetaten sind zur Scheidewand geworden zwischen euch und eurem Gott und eure Sünden haben sein Antlitz vor euch verhüllt, dass er nicht erhört.

Denn eure Hände sind mit Blut befleckt und eure Finger mit Missetat, eure Lippen reden Lügen und eure Zunge spricht Frevel aus.

Da ist keiner, der für Gerechtigkeit spräche, keiner, der nach Wahrheit urteilte; sondern sie vertrauen auf Nichtigkeit und reden Täuschungen, sie gehen schwanger mit Unheil und bringen Missetat zur Welt.

Schlangeneier brüten sie aus und Spinnengewebe weben sie. Wer von ihren Eiern isst, wird sterben; und was ausgebrütet wird, bricht als Basilisk hervor.

Ihr Gewebe taugt nicht zur Kleidung noch kann man sich mit dem, was sie gewoben bedecken; ihre Arbeiten sind unnütz und die Arbeit des Frevels ist in ihren Händen.

Ihre Füße laufen zum Bösen und eilen, unschuldiges Blut zu vergießen; ihre Gedanken sind heillose Gedanken, Verwüstung und Zerstörung ist auf ihren Wegen.

Den Weg des Friedens kennen sie nicht, es ist kein Recht auf ihren Schritten, ihre Pfade sind krumm; jeder, der sie betritt, ist fern vom Frieden.

Bekenntnis der Sünde

Deswegen ist von uns das recht fern und die Gerechtigkeit erreicht uns nicht, wir haben auf Licht geharrt und siehe da Finsternis, auf Glanz und wir wandeln im Dunkeln.

Wir tappen wie Blinde an der Wand und wie solche, die keine Augen haben, tasten wir umher; wir straucheln am Mittage wie in der Finsternis und sind an düsteren Orten wie Tote.

Wie brüllen wie Bären alle und stöhnen hinbrütend gleich Tauben, wir warten auf Recht und es erscheint nicht, auf Heil und es bleibt fern von uns.

Denn vielfach sind unsere Missetaten vor dir und unsere Sünden zeugen wider uns, denn unsere Frevel sind vor uns und unsere Missetaten kennen wir.

Oft sündigten wir und logen wider den Herrn und wandten uns ab, um nicht unserem Gott zu folgen, sondern Unterdrückung und Übertretung zu reden; wir hegten im Herzen Worte der Lüge und redeten sie.

Und das Recht wurde zurückgedrängt und die Gerechtigkeit stand fern, denn zusammengestürzt ist auf der Straße die Wahrheit und die Billigkeit konnte nicht einherschreiten.

Und die Wahrheit geriet in Vergessenheit und wer das Böse mied, stand dem Raube offen. Und der Herr sah es und es war missfällig in seinen Augen, dass kein recht sei.

Der Erlöser von Zion

Und er sah, dass niemand da sei, und war unwillig, dass niemand entgegenträte; und sein Arm leistete ihm Hilfe und seine Gerechtigkeit selbst half ihm.

Er ist mit Gerechtigkeit bekleidet wie mit einem Panzer und der Helm des Heiles ist auf seinem Haupte, er ist angetan mit den Gewändern der Rache und eingehüllt in Eifer wie in einen Mantel,

wie zur Rache, wie zur Zornesvergeltung an seinen Feinden und zur Rückerstattung an seine Widersacher; den Inseln wird er vergelten.

Dann werden die vom Niedergange den Namen des Herrn fürchten und die vom Aufgange der Sonne seine Herrlichkeit, wenn er kommt wie ein reißender Strom, den der Hauch des Herrn daherjagt.

Und er kommt für Sion als Erlöser und für die, welche umkehren von ihrer Bosheit in Jakob, spricht der Herr.

Dies ist mein Bund mit ihnen, spricht der Herr: Mein Geist, der in dir ist, und meine Worte, die ich in deinen Mund gelegt habe, werden nicht weichen aus deinem Munde und aus dem Munde deiner Nachkommen und aus dem Munde der Nachkommen, spricht der Herr, von nun an bis in Ewigkeit.
