- Kapitel 8 -

Let there be a trumpet in your throat, like an eagle over the house of the Lord, on behalf of those who have transgressed my covenant and violated my law.

They will call on me: “O my God, we, Israel, know you.”

Israel has thrown away goodness; the enemy will overtake him.

They have reigned, but not by me. Leaders have emerged, and I did not recognize them. Their silver and their gold, they have made into idols for themselves, so that they might cross over.(a)

Your calf, Samaria, has been rejected. My fury has been enraged against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed?

For it is itself also from Israel: a workman made it, and it is not God. For the calf of Samaria will be used for the webs of spiders.(b)

For they will sow wind and reap a whirlwind. It does not have a firm stalk; the bud will yield no grain. But if it does yield, strangers will eat it.

Israel has been devoured. Now, among the nations, it has become like an unclean vessel.

For they have gone up to Assur, a wild ass alone by himself. Ephraim has given presents to his lovers.

But even when they will have brought the nations together for the sake of money, now I will assemble them. And they will rest for a little while from the burden of the king and the leaders.

For Ephraim multiplied altars to sin, and sanctuaries have become an offense for him.

I will write to him my intricate laws, which have been treated like strangers.

They will offer victims, they will immolate flesh and will eat, and the Lord will not accept them. For now he will remember their iniquity, and he will repay their sins: they will be turned back to Egypt.

And Israel has forgotten his Maker and has built shrines. And Judah has increased its fortified cities. And I will send fire upon his cities, and it will devour its structures.(c)

(a)8:4 In this context, interirent does not merely mean ‘to die.’ Literally, this verb means ‘to go between,’ in other words to cross over into the next life. They think that they will be able, through the idolatry of silver and gold, money and power, to pass between this life and the next. They are mistaken.(Conte)

(b)8:6 In other words, the idolatrous statue of a calf will gather dust and collect cobwebs. Also, these idolatrous practices will fall out of use and will, metaphorically, gather dust.(Conte)

Der Abtrünnigkeit Israels

An deine Kehle die Posaune! Wie ein Adler stürzt er auf das Haus des Herrn, weil sie meinen Bund übertreten und gegen mein Gesetz gefrevelt haben.

Sie rufen mich an: Mein Gott! wir, Israel, kennen dich!

Israel verwarf das Gute, der Feind soll es verfolgen.

Sie haben Könige gewählt, doch nicht nach meinem Willen, Fürsten, doch ich wusste nichts von diesen; ihr Silber und Gold machten sie sich zu Götzenbildern, auf dass sie zugrunde gingen.

Verworfen ist dein Kalb, Samaria! mein Zorn ist ergrimmt über sie, bis wann noch vermögen sie nicht rein zu werden?

Ja, von Israel kommt auch dieses her; ein Künstler hat es gemacht, aber ein Gott ist es nicht; ja, zu Spinnengeweben soll das Kalb Samarias werden.

Denn Wind säen sie und Sturmwind werden sie ernten; kein Halm treibt daselbst und die Saat gibt kein Mehl; sollte sie aber etwas geben, so werden es Fremde verzehren.

Verschlungen ist Israel, schon ist es unter den Völkern geworden wie ein unreines Gefäß.

Denn sie sind nach Assur hingezogen, ein ungeselliger Waldesel, Ephraim gab den Buhlen Geschenke.

Aber wenn sie auch die Völker jetzt um Lohn anwerben sollten, so werde ich sie doch zusammentreiben, sie sollen ein wenig von der Last des Königs und der Fürsten rasten.

Denn Ephraim hat viele Altäre zu seiner Verschuldung gebaut, die Altäre sind ihm zur Versündigung geworden.

Mochte ich ihnen meine Gesetze vielfältig vorschreiben, wie etwas Fremdartiges wurden sie geachtet.

Sie mögen Opfer darbringen, Fleisch schlachten und es essen, aber der Herr wird es nicht annehmen; nun wird er ihrer Verschuldung gedenken und ihre Sünden heimsuchen und sie werden sich wieder nach Ägypten wenden.

Israel hat seines Schöpfers vergessen und Götzentempel gebaut, Judas hat die festen Städte gemehrt; so will ich denn Feuer wider seine Städte entsenden, das seine Paläste verzehren soll.
