- Kapitel 26 -

(Genesis 12:1–9)

Then, when a famine arose over the land, after that barrenness which had happened in the days of Abraham, Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Palestinians, in Gerar.

And the Lord appeared to him, and he said: “Do not descend into Egypt, but rest in the land that I will tell you,

and sojourn in it, and I will be with you, and I will bless you. For to you and to your offspring I will give all these regions, completing the oath that I promised to Abraham your father.

And I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And I will give to your posterity all these regions. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed,

because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my precepts and commandments, and observed the ceremonies and the laws.”

Isaac Deceives Abimelech

And so Isaac remained in Gerar.

And when he was questioned by the men of that place about his wife, he answered, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to confess her to be his mate, thinking that perhaps they would put him to death because of her beauty.

And when very many days had passed, and he had remained in the same place, Abimelech, king of the Palestinians, gazing through a window, saw him being playful with Rebekah, his wife.

And summoning him, he said: “It is clear that she is your wife. Why did you falsely claim her to be your sister?” He answered, “I was afraid, lest I might die because of her.”

And Abimelech said: “Why have you burdened us? Someone from the people could have lain with your wife, and you would have brought a great sin upon us.” And he instructed all the people, saying,

“Whoever will touch the wife of this man will die a death.”

Isaac’s Prosperity

Then Isaac sowed in that land, and he found, in that same year, one hundredfold. And the Lord blessed him.

And the man was enriched, and he continued prospering as well as increasing, until he became very great.

Likewise, he had possessions of sheep and of herds, and a very large family. Because of this, the Palestinians envied him,

so, at that time, they obstructed all the wells that the servants of his father Abraham had dug, filling them with soil.

It reached a point where Abimelech himself said to Isaac, “Move away from us, for you have become very much more powerful than we.”

And departing, he then went toward the torrent of Gerar, and he dwelt there.

Again, he dug up other wells, which the servants of his father Abraham had dug, and which, after his death, the Philistines had formerly obstructed. And he called them by the same names that his father had called them before.

And they dug in the torrent, and they found living water.(a)

But in that place also the shepherds of Gerar argued against the shepherds of Isaac, by saying, “It is our water.” For this reason, he called the name of the well, because of what had happened, ‘Calumny.’

Then they dug up yet another one. And over that one also they fought, and he called it, ‘Enmity.’

Advancing from there, he dug another well, over which they did not contend. And so he called its name, ‘Latitude,’ saying, “Now the Lord has expanded us and caused us to increase across the land.”(c)

Then he ascended from that place into Beersheba,

where the Lord appeared to him on the same night, saying: “I am the God of Abraham your father. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you, and I will multiply your offspring because of my servant Abraham.”

And so he built an altar there. And he invoked the name of the Lord, and he stretched out his tent. And he instructed his servants to dig a well.

Isaac’s Covenant with Abimelech

When Abimelech, and Ahuzzath, his friend, and Phicol, the leader of the military, had arrived from Gerar to that place,

Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, a man whom you hate, and whom you have expelled from among you?”

And they responded: “We saw that the Lord is with you, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us initiate a pact,

so that you may not do us any kind of harm, just as we have touched nothing of yours, and have not caused any injury to you, but with peace we released you, augmented by the blessing of the Lord.”

Therefore, he made them a feast, and after the food and drink,

arising in the morning, they swore to one another. And Isaac sent them away peacefully to their own place.

Then, behold, on the same day the servants of Isaac came, reporting to him about a well which they had dug, and saying: “We have found water.”

Therefore, he called it, ‘Abundance.’ And the name of the city was established as ‘Beersheba,’ even to the present day.

Esau’s Wives

In truth, at forty years of age, Esau took wives: Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon, of the same place.

And they both offended the mind of Isaac and Rebekah.

(a)26:19 The expression ‘aquam vivam’ has a dual meaning. It refers to water that continually pours forth (perhaps similar to an artesian well). It also has a spiritual meaning, as found in the Gospels. The torrent is a wadi, in other words, a dry stream bed that is a rushing torrent in the rainy season (perhaps only one or two months a year). The word torrentem in Latin can refer to something that is hot and dry, or to a rushing stream.(Conte)

Isaak und Abimelech

(1. Mose 12,1-9)

Es kam aber eine Hungersnot über das Land, nach jener Unfruchtbarkeit, welche zur Zeit Abrahams gewesen war, da zog Isaak zu Abimelech, dem Könige der Philister, nach Gerara.

Und der Herr erschien ihm und sprach: Ziehe nicht nach Ägypten hinab, sondern bleibe in dem Lande, das ich dir sagen werde.

Weile als Fremdling in demselben, so will ich mit dir sein und dich segnen. Denn dir und deinen Nachkommen werde ich alle diese Länder geben und so den Schwur erfüllen, den ich Abraham, deinem Vater, geschworen habe.

Und ich werde deine Nachkommen mehren wie die Sterne des Himmels, und werde deinen Nachkommen alle diese Länder geben; und in deiner Nachkommenschaft sollen alle Völker der Erde gesegnet werden,

dafür dass Abraham meiner Stimme gehorsam gewesen ist, und meine Gebote und Befehle gehalten, und meine Vorschriften und Weisungen beobachtet hat.

So blieb Isaak also in Gerara.

Als nun die Männer dieses Ortes nach seinem Weibe fragten, antwortete er: Sie ist meine Schwester; denn er fürchtete sich, zu bekennen, dass sie ihm durch das Ehebund verbunden sei, und dachte, sie möchten ihn etwa um ihrer Schönheit willen töten.

Und als eine Zeit verflossen war, seitdem er sich dort aufhielt, schaute Abimelech, der König der Philister, durch das Fenster und sah ihn mit Rebekka, seinem Weibe, scherzen.

Da rief ihn Abimelech zu sich und sprach: Offenbar ist sie dein Weib! Warum sagtest du fälschlich, sie sei deine Schwester? Er antwortete: ich fürchtete um ihretwillen sterben zu müssen.

Da sagte Abimelech: Warum hast du uns betrogen? Es hätte jemand vom Volke mit deinem Weibe sich vergehen können, und du hättest so eine große Sünde über uns gebracht. Und er gebot allem Volke und sprach:

Wer das Weib dieses Mannes antastet, soll des Todes sterben!

Isaak aber säte in jenem Lande und erntete in diesem Jahre hundertfältig; denn der Herr segnete ihn.

Und der Mann ward reich und schritt stetig fort und wuchs, bis er ungemein groß ward.

Und er besaß Schafe und Rinder, und sehr viel Gesinde. Darum beneideten ihn die Philister

und verschütteten zu jener Zeit alle Brunnen, welche die Knechte seines Vaters Abraham gegraben hatten, indem sie dieselben mit Erde füllten,

so dass Abimelech selbst zu Isaak sprach: Ziehe hinweg von uns, denn du bist uns allzu mächtig geworden.

Da zog er von dort hinweg, um zu dem Tale von Gerara zu kommen und dort sein Lager aufzuschlagen.

Und er grub die anderen Brunnen wieder auf, welche die Knechte seines Vaters Abraham gegraben und welche die Philister nach seinem Tode einst verschüttet hatten, und nannte sie mit denselben Namen, die ihnen vordem sein Vater gegeben hatte.

Und sie gruben im Tale und fanden Quellwasser.

Aber auch dort gerieten sie Hirten von Gerara in Streit mit den Hirten Isaaks und sprachen: Uns gehört das Wasser! Darum nannte er dem gemäß, was sich zugetragen hatte, den Namen des Brunnens Zank.

Hierauf gruben sie einen andern Brunnen; und auch seinetwegen gerieten sie in Streit, und er nannte ihn Feindschaft.

Dann zog er von dannen und grub einen andern Brunnen, über diesen gerieten sie nicht in Streit; darum nannte er dessen Namen Weite und sprach: Nun hat uns der Herr freien Raum geschafft und bewirkt, dass wir uns ausbreiten im Lande.

Von diesem Orte brach er nach Bersabee auf.

Dort erschien ihm der Herr in derselben Nacht und sprach: Ich bin der Gott Abrahams, deines Vaters! Fürchte dich nicht, denn ich bin mit dir, und ich will dich segnen und deine Nachkommen mehren, um Abrahams, meines Dieners willen.

Da baute er daselbst einen Altar, und rief den Namen des Herrn an, und schlug sein Zelt auf. Und er befahl seinen Knechten, einen Brunnen zu graben.

Da kam Abimelech an diesen Ort von Gerara, und Ochozath, sein Freund, und Phikol, sein Heerführer;

und Isaak sprach zu ihnen: Warum seid ihr zu mir gekommen, dem Manne, den ihr doch hasset und von euch hinweggetrieben habt?

Sie antworteten: Wir haben gesehen, dass der Herr mit dir ist, und deshalb sprachen wir: Ein Eid sei zwischen uns, und wir wollen ein Bündnis schließen,

dass du uns nichts Böses zufügen willst, wie auch wir von dir nichts angetastet, noch etwas getan haben, was dir Schaden brachte, sondern dich in Frieden haben ziehen lassen, voll des Segens vom Herrn.

Da bereitete er ihnen ein Mahl, und sie aßen und tranken.

Am anderen Morgen aber erhoben sie sich früh und schworen sich einander zu; und Isaak entließ sie in Frieden in ihre Heimat.

Aber siehe, an demselben Tage kamen Isaaks Knechte, und berichteten ihm von dem Brunnen, den sie gegraben hatten, und sprachen: Wir haben Wasser gefunden!

Darum nannte er ihn Überfluss; und die Stadt ward Bersabee genannt bis auf diesen Tag.

Als nun Esau vierzig Jahre alt war, nahm er Judith, die Tochter Beeris, des Hethiters, und Basemath, die Tochter Elons, derselben Abkunft, zu Weibern.

Diese beiden betrübten das Herz Isaaks und Rebekkas.
