The Book of Ezra

- Kapitel 7 -

Now after these things, during the reign of Artaxerxes, the king of the Persians, Ezra, the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, priest from the beginning,

this same Ezra, ascended from Babylon; and he was a proficient scribe in the law of Moses, which the Lord God gave to Israel. And the king granted to him his every petition. For the hand of the Lord, his God, was over him.

And some from the sons of Israel, and from the sons of the priests, and from the sons of the Levites, and from the singing men, and from the gatekeepers, and from the temple servants ascended to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of king Artaxerxes.

And they arrived at Jerusalem in the fifth month, in the same seventh year of the king.

For on the first day of the first month, he began to ascend from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month, he arrived at Jerusalem. For the good hand of his God was over him.

For Ezra prepared his heart, so that he might search the law of the Lord, and so that he might keep and teach precept and judgment in Israel.

Artaxerxes’ Letter for Ezra

Now this is a copy of the letter of the edict, which king Artaxerxes gave to Ezra, the priest, a scribe well-taught in the words and precepts of the Lord and in his ceremonies in Israel:

“Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra, the priest, a very learned scribe of the law of the God of heaven: a greeting.

It has been decreed by me, that whosoever wishes, among the people of Israel and their priests and Levites within my kingdom, to go to Jerusalem, may go with you.

For you have been sent from the face of the king and his seven counselors, so that you may visit Judea and Jerusalem by the law of your God, which is in your hand,

and so that you may carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose tabernacle is in Jerusalem.

And all the silver and gold, as much as you will find in the entire province of Babylon, and which the people will wish to offer, and which some of the priests will offer freely to the house of their God, which is in Jerusalem,

accept it freely. And with this money, carefully purchase calves, rams, lambs, and their sacrifices and libations, and offer these upon the altar of the temple of your God, which is in Jerusalem.

But also, whatever it will please you and your brothers to do with the remainder of the silver and gold, do so in accord with the will of your God.

Likewise, the vessels that have been given to you for the ministry of the house of your God, deliver these to the sight of God in Jerusalem.

Then, whatever more will be needed for the house of your God, as much as is necessary for you to spend, it shall be given from the treasury, and from the king’s finances,

and by me. I, king Artaxerxes, have appointed and decreed to all the keepers of the public treasury, those who are beyond the river, that whatever Ezra, the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall ask of you, you shall provide it without delay,

even up to one hundred talents of silver, and up to one hundred cors of wheat, and up to one hundred baths of wine, and up to one hundred baths of oil, and truly salt without measure.

All that pertains to the rite of the God of heaven, let it be distributed scrupulously to the house of the God of heaven, lest perhaps he may become angry against the kingdom of the king and his sons.

Likewise, we would make known to you, about all the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, and the ministers of the house of this God, that you have no authority to impose tax, or tribute, or duty upon them.(a)

But as for you, Ezra, in accord with the wisdom of your God, which is in your hand, appoint judges and magistrates, so that they may judge the entire people, which is beyond the river, especially so that they may know the law of your God, but also so as to teach the ignorant freely.

And anyone who will not diligently keep the law of your God, and the law of the king, judgment shall be upon him, either to death, or to exile, or to the confiscation of his goods, or certainly to prison.”

Ezra Blesses God

Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, who has put this into the heart of the king, so that he may glorify the house of the Lord, which is in Jerusalem.

For he has turned his mercy toward me in the sight of the king, and his counselors, and all the powerful leaders of the king. And so, having been strengthened by the hand of the Lord, my God, which was upon me, I gathered together some of the leaders of Israel, those who were to go up with me.

Die Ankunft von Esra

Nach diesen Ereignissen aber kam, als Artaxerxes, der König der Perser, herrschte, Esdras, der Sohn Sarajas, des Sohnes Azarias, des Sohnes Helkias,

des Sohnes Sellums, des Sohnes Sadoks, des Sohnes Achitobs,

des Sohnes Amarias, des Sohnes Azarias, des Sohnes Marajoths,

des Sohnes Zarahias, des Sohnes Ozis, des Sohnes Bokkis,

des Sohnes Abisues, des Sohnes Phinees, des Sohnes Eleazars, des Sohnes Aarons, des Priesters vom Anfange;

dieser Esdras kam herauf von Babylon, ein Schriftgelehrter, kundig des Gesetzes Moses, welches Gott, der Herr, Israel gegeben hatte. Und der König gab ihm alles, was er begehrte, da die Hand des Herrn, seines Gottes, über ihm waltete.

Und es zogen einige von den Söhnen Israels und von den Söhnen der Priester und von den Söhnen der Leviten und von den Sängern und von den Türhütern und von den Nathinäern im siebten Jahre des Königs Artaxerxes nach Jerusalem.

Diese kamen nach Jerusalem im fünften Monate, das ist das siebte Jahr des Königs.

Denn am ersten Tage des ersten Monats begann er, von Babylon heraufzuziehen, und am ersten Tage des fünften Monats kam er nach Jerusalem, da die gütige Hand seines Gottes über ihn waltete.

Denn Esdras wendete seinen Sinn darauf, das Gesetz des Herrn zu erforschen und die Gebote und Rechte in Israel zu lehren und zu erfüllen.

Der Brief des Artaxerxes an Esra

Dies ist aber die Abschrift des schriftlichen Erlasses, den der König Artaxerxes dem Priester Esdras, dem Schriftgelehrten, gab, welcher der Worte und Gebote des Herrn und seiner Satzungen in Israel kundig war.

Artaxerxes, der König der Könige, wünscht dem Priester Esdras, dem Schriftgelehrten, kundig im Gesetze des Gottes des Himmels, Heil!

Es ist von mir bestimmt worden, dass jeder in meinem Reiche von dem Volke Israel und von seinen Priestern und von den Leviten, dem es gefällt, nach Jerusalem zu ziehen, mit dir gehen darf.

Denn du bist vom Angesichte des Königs und seiner sieben Räte gesandt, Judäa und Jerusalem nach dem Gesetze deines Gottes zu untersuchen, das in deiner Hand ist,

und um das Silber und Gold dorthin zu bringen, welches der König und seine Räte dem Gott Israels, dessen Wohnung zu Jerusalem ist, aus freien Stücken dargebracht haben,

sowie alles Silber und Gold, das du in der ganzen Landschaft Babylon finden kannst und das Volk opfern will, und was die Priester für das Haus ihres Gottes, das zu Jerusalem ist, freiwillig darbringen,

nimm ungehindert und kaufe sorgfältig für dieses Geld Kälber, Widder, Lämmer, samt deren Speiseopfern und Trankopfern, und bringe sie auf dem Altare des Tempels eures Gottes dar, der zu Jerusalem ist.

Was ferner dir und deinen Brüdern gut scheint, mit dem übrigen Silber und Golde zu tun, das tuet dem Willen eures Gottes gemäß.

Und die Geräte, welche dir zum Dienste im Hause deines Gottes gegeben werden, liefere vor dem Angesichte Gottes zu Jerusalem ab.

Aber auch das übrige, was für das Haus deines Gottes erforderlich sein wird, wieviel du auch aufwenden musst, soll aus dem Schatze und dem Besitze des Königs dargereicht werden

und von mir. Ich Artaxerxes, der König, habe alle Verwalter des öffentlichen Schatzes, die jenseits des Stromes sind, angewiesen und verpflichtet, alles, was Esdras, der Priester, der Schriftgelehrte im Gesetze des Gottes des Himmels, von euch fordern wird, ohne Verzug zu gewähren

bis zu hundert Talenten Silber und bis zu hundert Kor Getreide und bis zu hundert Bat Wein und bis zu hundert Bat Öl, Salz aber ohne Messung.

Alles, was zum Dienste des Gottes des Himmels gehört, soll für das Haus des Gottes des Himmels genau gespendet werden, dass er nicht etwa wider das Reich des Königs und seiner Söhne zürne.

Auch tun wir euch betreffs aller Priester, Leviten, Sänger, Türhüter, Nathinäer und Diener dieses Hauses Gottes kund, dass ihr nicht das Recht habt, ihnen Zoll und Steuer und Jahrgelder aufzuerlegen.

Du aber, Esdras! bestelle nach der Weisheit deines Gottes, die dir verliehen ist, Richter und Vorsteher, dass sie das ganze Volk, das jenseits des Stromes ist, richten, die nämlich, welche das Gesetz deines Gottes kennen; aber auch die, welche es nicht kennen, lehret ungehindert.

Ein jeder nun, der das Gesetz deines Gottes und das Gesetz des Königs nicht befolgt, über diesen soll sorgfältig Gericht gehalten werden, es sei zum Tode oder zur Verbannung oder zur Strafe an seiner Habe oder doch zum Kerker.

Gepriesen sei der Herr, der Gott unserer Väter, der solches dem Könige in das Herz gab, das Haus des Herrn in Jerusalem zu verherrlichen,

und der mir seine Barmherzigkeit vor dem Könige und seinen Räten und allen mächtigen Fürsten des Königs zugewendet hat; und ich ward gestärkt durch die Hand des Herrn, meines Gottes, der über mir waltete, und versammelte die Häupter aus Israel, dass sie mit mir hinaufzögen.
