- Kapitel 40 -

(Zechariah 2:1–5)

In the twenty-fifth year of our transmigration, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck, on this very day, the hand of the Lord was placed upon me, and he brought me to that place.(a)

In the visions of God, he brought me into the land of Israel, and he released me on an exceedingly high mountain, on which there was something like the edifice of a city, verging toward the south.

And he led me into that place. And behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a linen rope in his hand, and a measuring reed in his hand. And he was standing at the gate.

And the same man said to me: “Son of man, look with your eyes, and listen with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I will reveal to you. For you have been brought to this place, so that these things may be revealed to you. Announce all that you see to the house of Israel.”

The East Gate

And behold, there was a wall outside of the house, encircling it all around, and in the man’s hand was a measuring reed of six cubits and a palm. And he measured the width of the edifice with one reed; likewise, the height with one reed.(b)

And he went to the gate which looked toward the east, and he ascended by its steps. And he measured the width of the threshold of the gate as one reed, that is, one threshold was one reed in width.

And a chamber was one reed in length and one reed in width. And between the chambers, there were five cubits.

And the threshold of the gate, next to the inner vestibule of the gate, was one reed.(c)

And he measured the vestibule of the gate as eight cubits, and its front as two cubits. But the vestibule of the gate was inside.

Moreover, the chambers of the gate, toward the way of the east, were three from one side to the other. The three were of one measure, and the fronts were of one measure, on both sides.

And he measured the width of the threshold of the gate as ten cubits, and the length of the gate as thirteen cubits.

And before the chambers, the border was one cubit. And on both sides, the border was one cubit. But the chambers were six cubits, from one side to the other.

And he measured the gate, from the roof of one chamber to the roof of another, twenty-five cubits in width, from door to door.

And he found the fronts to be sixty cubits. And at the front, there was a court for the gate on every side all around.

And before the face of the gate, which extended even to the face of the vestibule of the gate of the interior, there were fifty cubits.

And there were slanting windows in the chambers and at their fronts, which were within the gate on every side all around. And similarly, there were also windows in the vestibules all around the interior, and there were images of palm trees before the fronts.

The Outer Court

And he led me away to the outer court, and behold, there were storerooms and a layer of pavement stones throughout the court. Thirty storerooms encircled the pavement.(d)

And the pavement in front of the gates, along the length of the gates, was lower.

And he measured the width, from the face of the lower gate to the front of the outer part of the inner court, to be one hundred cubits, to the east and to the north.

The North Gate

Likewise, he measured the gate of the outer court, which looked to the way of the north, to be as much in length as in width.

And its chambers were three from one side to the other. And its front and its vestibule, in accord with the measure of the former gate, were fifty cubits in its length and twenty-five cubits in width.

Now its windows, and the vestibule, and the engravings were in accord with the measure of the gate which looked to the east. And its ascent was by seven steps, and a vestibule was before it.

And the gate of the inner court was opposite the gate of the north, and that of the east. And he measured from gate to gate as one hundred cubits.

The South Gate

And he led me to the way of the south, and behold, there was a gate which looked toward the south. And he measured its front and its vestibule to be the same as the measures above.

And its windows and the vestibule all around were like the other windows: fifty cubits in length and twenty-five cubits in width.

And there were seven steps to ascend to it, and a vestibule before its doors. And there were engraved palm trees, one on each side, at its front.

And there was a gate at the inner court, on the way to the south. And he measured from one gate to another, on the way to the south, to be one hundred cubits.

The Gates of the Inner Court

And he led me into the inner court, to the south gate. And he measured the gate to be in accord with the measures above.

Its chamber, and its front, and its vestibule had the same measures. And its windows and its vestibule all around were fifty cubits in length, and twenty-five cubits in width.

And the vestibule all around was twenty-five cubits in length, and five cubits in width.

And its vestibule was toward the outer court, and its palm trees were at the front. And there were eight steps to ascend to it.

And he led me into the inner court, along the way of the east. And he measured the gate to be in accord with the measures above.

Its chamber, and its front, and its vestibule were as above. And its windows and its vestibules all around were fifty cubits in length, and twenty-five cubits in width.

And it had a vestibule, that is, at the outer court. And the engraved palm trees at its front were on one side and the other. And its ascent was by eight steps.

And he led me to the gate which looked toward the north. And he measured it to be in accord with the measures above.

Its chamber, and its front, and its vestibule, and its windows all around were fifty cubits in length, and twenty-five cubits in width.

And its vestibule looked toward the outer court. And an engraving of palm trees at its front was on one side and the other. And its ascent was by eight steps.

Eight Tables for Sacrifices

And at each one of the storerooms, there was a door at the front of the gates. There, they washed the holocaust.

And at the vestibule of the gate, there were two tables on one side, and two tables on the other side, so that the holocaust, and the offering for sin, and the offering for transgression could be immolated upon them.

And at the outer side, which ascends to the door of the gate that goes toward the north, there were two tables. And at the other side, before the vestibule of the gate, there were two tables.

Four tables were on one side, and four tables were on the other side; along the sides of the gate, there were eight tables, upon which they immolated.

Now the four tables for the holocausts were constructed of square stones: one and a half cubit in length, and one and a half cubits in width, and one cubit in height. Upon these, they placed the vessels, in which the holocaust and the victim were immolated.

And their edges were one palm in width, turned inward all around. And the flesh of the oblation was on the tables.

Chambers for Ministry

And outside the interior gate, there were storerooms for the cantors, in the inner court, which was beside the gate that looks toward the north. And their face was opposite the way to the south; one was beside the east gate, which looked toward the way of the north.

And he said to me: “This is the storeroom that looks toward the south; it shall be for the priests who keep watch for the protection of the temple.

Moreover, the storeroom that looks toward the north will be for the priests who keep watch over the ministry of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, those among the sons of Levi who may draw near to the Lord, so that they may minister to him.”

The Inner Court

And he measured the court to be one hundred cubits in length, and one hundred cubits in width, with four equal sides. And the altar was before the face of the temple.

And he led me into the vestibule of the temple. And he measured the vestibule to be five cubits on one side, and five cubits on the other side. And the width of the gate was three cubits on one side, and three cubits on the other side.

Now the length of the vestibule was twenty cubits, and the width was eleven cubits, and there were eight steps to ascend to it. And there were pillars at the front, one on this side and another on that side.

Eine neue Stadt, ein neuer Tempel

(Sacharja 2,1-5)

Im fünfundzwanzigsten Jahre unserer Wegführung im Anfange des Jahres, am Zehnten des Monats, im vierzehnten Jahre nach der Eroberung kam die Hand des Herrn über mich und führte mich dorthin.

In göttlichen Gesichten führte er mich in das Land Israel und ließ mich auf einem sehr hohen Berge nieder, auf welchem gegen Mittag ein Bau, einer Stadt gleich, war.

Und da er mich dorthin führte, siehe, war da ein Mann, dessen Gestalt das Ansehen von Erz hatte; ins einer Hand hielt er eine leinene Schnur und eine Messrute, derselbe stand am Tore.

Und der Mann sprach zu mir: Menschensohn! Schaue mit deinen Augen und höre mit deinen Ohren und sei aufmerksam auf alles, was ich dir zeigen werde; denn du wardst hierher geführt, damit es dir gezeigt werde; verkünde alles, was du siehst, dem Hause Israel!

Und siehe, eine Mauer lief außen rings um das Haus, und der Mann hatte eine Messrute in der Hand, die sechs Ellen und je eine Handbreit lang war, und er maß die Breite des Baues: eine Rute, und die Höhe eine Rute.

Das Osttor des Tempels

Und er kam zu einem Tore, das in der Richtung nach Morgen lag, und stieg die Stufen dazu empor und maß die Schwelle es Tores, eine Rute in der Breite, das ist, eine Schwelle hatte die Breite einer Rute;

auch maß er die Seitenkammern, eine Rute in der Länge und eine Rute in der Breite, und zwischen den Seitenkammern war ein Raum von fünf Ellen.

Und er maß die Schwelle des Tores auf der Innenseite der Torhalle: eine Rute;

dann maß er die Torhalle: acht Ellen, und die Vorsprünge derselben: je zwei Ellen; die Torhalle aber war nach innen.

Und von den Seitenkammern am Tore in der Richtung nach Morgen waren drei auf dieser und drei auf jener Seite; alle drei hatten einerlei Maß, auch die Vorsprünge auf beiden Seiten hatten einerlei Maß.

Dann maß er die Breite der Schwelle des Tores: zehn Ellen, und die Länge des Tores: dreizehn Ellen.

Und die Schranke vor den Kammern: eine Elle und eine Elle Abgrenzung von beiden Seiten; aber die Seitenkammern hatten je sechs Ellen auf beiden Seiten.

Alsdann maß er das Tor vom Dache der einen Seitenkammer her bis zum Dache der andern, eine Breite von fünfundzwanzig Ellen von einem Eingang gegen den anderen.

Und er machte die Vorsprünge zu sechzig Ellen und nächst dem Vorsprung des Torhofes war eine Halle, welche das Tor rings umschloß.

Und von der Vorderseite des Tores, das bis zur Vorderseite der Halle des inneren Tores reichte, fünfzig Ellen.

Und schiefabfallende Fenster waren in den Seitenkammern und den Vorsprüngen derselben, nach dem Inneren des Tores zu von allen Seiten ringsum; ebenso liefen in den Vorhallen Fenster nach innen ringsum und an den Vorsprüngen waren Nachbildungen von Palmen.

Der äußere Vorhof

Sodann führte er mich nach dem äußeren Vorhofe; siehe, da waren Schatzkammern, und der Boden des Vorhofes war ringsum mit Steinen belegt, dreißig Kammern waren im Umkreise um das Pflaster.

Das Pflaster vor den Toren, entsprechend der Länge der Tore, war niedriger.

Und er maß die Breite von der Vorderseite des unteren Tore an bis zum äußeren Vorsprunge des inneren Hofes: hundert Ellen waren von Morgen aus und ebensoviele von Mitternacht.

Die nördliche Pforte

Auch das Tor, welches im äußeren Hofe in der Richtung nach Mitternacht zu lag, maß er der Länge und Breite nach

und die Seitenkammern desselben, von denen drei auf der einen und drei auf der anderen Seite lagen, seinen Vorbau, seine Halle; sie hatten dasselbe Maß wie das erste Tor, fünfzig Ellen in die Länge und fünfundzwanzig Ellen in die Breite.

Die Fenster derselben aber, die Halle und das Schnitzwerk hatten dasselbe Maß wie das Tor gegen Morgen, auf sieben Stufen stieg man zu demselben empor und eine Halle lag vor demselben.

Je ein Tor ferner des inneren Vorhofes lag den Toren gegen Mitternacht wie gegen Morgen gegenüber und er maß von Tor zu Tor hundert Ellen.

Die südliche Pforte

Sodann führte er mich auch in der Richtung gegen Mittag, siehe, da war ein Tor gegen Mittag gerichtet und er maß dessen Vorbau und die Halle, sie hatten das Maß der andern.

Auch die Fenster desselben und die Hallen ringsherum waren wie die anderen Fenster, sie hatten fünfzig Ellen Länge und fünfundzwanzig Ellen Breite.

Auf sieben Stufen stieg man zu demselben hinauf, eine Halle war vor seinem Eingange und am Vorbau war Palmenschnitzwerk, eines von dieser und eines von jener Seite.

Auch hatte der innere Hof ein Tor gegen Mittag und er maß von einem Tore, in der Richtung gegen Mittag bis zum andern: hundert Ellen.

Die Tore des Innenhofs

Und er führte mich in den inneren Vorhof durch das Tor gegen Mittag und maß das Tor nach dem Maße der früheren:

und auch seine Seitenkammern und seine Vorsprünge und seine Halle maß er nach demselben Maße wie die andern und seine Fenster und seine Halle ringsherum, fünfzig Ellen hatte sie an Länge und fünfundzwanzig Ellen an Breite.

Und die Halle ringsherum hatte fünfundzwanzig Ellen Länge und fünf Ellen Breite.

Die Halle führte auf den äußeren Hof und an den Vorsprüngen derselben waren Palmen, acht Stufen bildeten den Aufstieg zu demselben.

Dann führte er mich in den inneren Vorhof in der Richtung nach Morgen zu und er maß das Tor nach den früheren Maßen,

seine Seitenkammern, seine Vorsprünge und seine Halle wie zuvor und seine Fenster und die Hallen ringsum: fünfzig Ellen Länge und fünfundzwanzig Breite.

Und er maß die Halle desselben, die auf den äußern Hof führte, Palmenschnitzwerk war an den Vorsprüngen auf dieser und auf jener Seite und auf acht Stufen stieg man zu demselben empor.

Hierauf führte er mich zum Tore gegen Mitternacht und maß es gleich den früheren Maßen,

seine Seitenkammern, seine Vorsprünge, seine Halle und seine Fenster ringsum; fünfzig Ellen maß er in der Länge und fünfundzwanzig in der Breite.

Seine Halle ging auf den äußeren Hof und an seinen Vorsprüngen war Palmenschnitzwerk auf dieser und auf jener Seite, auf acht Stufen stieg man zu ihm empor.

Wo die Opfer vorbereitet wurden

Für jede Schatzkammer war ein Eingang in den Vorbauten der Tore, dort sollte man die Brandopfer waschen.

Und in der Vorhalle des Tores standen zwei Tische auf der einen und zwei Tische auf der andern Seite, um das Brand-, Sünd- und Schuldopfer darauf zu schlachten.

An der Außenwand, welche sich gegen den Eingang des Tores hinzog, das gegen Mitternacht gerichtet ist, waren wieder zwei Tische und auf der anderen Seite zwei Tische vor der Halle des Tores.

Vier Tische waren auf einer, vier Tische auf der anderen Seite; acht Tische waren auf den Seiten des Tores, auf welchen man opfern sollte.

Vier Tische aber waren für das Brandopfer aus Quadersteinen gebaut, anderthalb Ellen lang, anderthalb Ellen breit und eine Elle hoch; auf diese sollte man die Geräte legen, mit denen Brand- und andere Opfer geschlachtet wurden.

Die Ränder derselben waren eine Hand breit, ringsherum noch einwärts gebogen, diese Tische waren für das Opferfleisch bestimmt.

Kammern für Sänger und Priester

Und außerhalb des inneren Tores waren Kammern für die Sänger im inneren Vorhofe, der seitwärts vom Mitternachtstore lag, und ihre Vorderseiten waren gegen Mittag gerichtet; auch war eine seitwärts vom Osttore, in der Richtung nach Mitternacht hin.

Und er sprach zu mir: Diese Kammer, welche gegen Mittag gerichtet ist, soll für die Priester bestimmt sein, welche im Tempel den Dienst versehen;

die Kammer aber, welche nach Mitternacht zu liegt, soll für die Priester sein, welche den Dienst am Altare versehen. Das sind die Söhne Sadoks, welche von den Söhnen Levis dem Herrn nahen, um ihm zu deinen.

Abmessungen des Innenhofs und des Vestibüls

Und er maß den Vorhof: hundert Ellen in der Länge und hundert Ellen in der Breite, ein Viereck, und der Altar stand vor der Vorderseite des Tempels.

Nun führte er mich in die Vorhalle des Tempels und er maß die Vorhalle: fünf Ellen auf dieser, und fünf Ellen auf jener Seite, und die Breite des Tores war drei Ellen auf dieser und drei Ellen auf der anderen Seite.

Die Länge der Vorhalle aber war zwanzig Ellen, die Breite elf Ellen, acht Stufen bildeten den Aufstieg zu derselben. Zwei Säulen aber waren an den Vorsprüngen, die einen hüben, die anderen drüben.
