(1 Timothy 1:1–2)

Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, in accord with the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,

to Timothy, most beloved son. Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

Faithfulness under Persecution

(Matthew 10:16–25)

I give thanks to God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. For without ceasing I hold the remembrance of you in my prayers, night and day,

desiring to see you, recalling your tears so as to be filled with joy,

calling to mind the same faith, which is in you unfeigned, which also first dwelt in your grandmother, Lois, and in your mother, Eunice, and also, I am certain, in you.

Because of this, I admonish you to revive the grace of God, which is in you by the imposition of my hands.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of virtue, and of love, and of self-restraint.(a)

And so, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner. Instead, collaborate with the Gospel in accord with the virtue of God,

who has freed us and has called us to his holy vocation, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus, before the ages of time.

And this has now been made manifest by the illumination of our Savior Jesus Christ, who certainly has destroyed death, and who has also illuminated life and incorruption through the Gospel.(b)

Of this Gospel, I have been appointed a preacher, and an Apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

For this reason, I also suffer these things. But I am not confounded. For I know in whom I have believed, and I am certain that he has the power to preserve what was entrusted to me, unto that day.

Holding to Sound Teaching

Hold to the kind of sound words that you have heard from me in the faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Guard the good entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.

Know this: that all those who are in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes.(c)

May the Lord have mercy on the house of Onesiphorus, because he has often refreshed me, and he has not been ashamed of my chains.

Instead, when he had arrived in Rome, he anxiously sought me and found me.

May the Lord grant to him to obtain mercy from the Lord in that day. And you know well in how many ways he has ministered to me at Ephesus.

an Timotheus, meinen geliebten Sohn. Gnade, Erbarmung, Friede von Gott dem Vater und Christus Jesus, unserm Herrn.

Timotheus' Glaube und Erbe

(Matthäus 10,16-25)

Ich sage Gott Dank, dem ich von den Voreltern her mit reinem Gewissen diene, wie ich ohne Unterlass deiner eingedenk bin in meinen Gebeten Tag und Nacht,

voll Sehnsucht dich zu sehen, wenn ich an deine Tränen denke, damit ich mit Freude erfüllt werden möchte,

da ich mir jenen Glauben in die Erinnerung rufe, der ungeheuchelt in dir lebt, und der zuerst in deiner Großmutter Lois und deiner Mutter Eunice wohnte, und, ich bin gewiss, auch in dir.

Deshalb erinnere ich dich, dass du die Gnadengabe Gottes wieder erweckest, welche in dir ist durch die Auflegung meiner Hände.

Denn Gott hat uns nicht einen Geist der Verzagtheit, sondern der Stärke und Liebe und Selbstbeherrschung gegeben.

Schämt euch nicht des Evangeliums

Schäme dich also nicht des Zeugnisses von unserem Herrn, noch meiner, seines Gefangenen, sondern leide mit für das Evangelium vermöge der Kraft Gottes,

der uns errettet und berufen hat durch seine heilige Berufung, nicht zufolge unserer Werke, sondern nach seinem Ratschlusse der Gnade, die uns verliehen worden in Christus Jesus vor ewigen Zeiten.

Jetzt aber ist sie offenbart worden durch die Erscheinung unseres Heilandes Jesus Christus, der den Tod vernichtet, dagegen Leben und Unverweslichkeit an´s Licht gebracht hat durch das Evangelium,

für welches ich bestellt bin als Verkünder und Apostel und Lehrer der Heiden.

Um dieser Ursache willen leide ich auch solches. Aber ich schäme mich dessen nicht, denn ich weiß, auf wen ich mein Vertrauen gesetzt habe, und ich bin überzeugt, dass er mächtig ist, meine Hinterlage zu bewahren auf jenen Tag.

Bleibt dem Glauben treu

Das Vorbild heilsamer Worte, welche du von mir gehört hast, bewahre im Glauben und in der Liebe, die in Christus Jesus sind.

Die schöne Hinterlage bewahre durch den Heiligen Geist, der in uns wohnt!

Du weißt ja, dass alle, die in Asien sind, sich von mir abgewendet haben, unter diesen Phigellus und Hermogenes.

Der Herr schenke dem Hause des Onesiphorus sein Erbarmen; denn oftmals hat er mich erquickt und sich meiner Ketten nicht geschämt.

Vielmehr forschte er, als er nach Rom kam, eifrig nach mir, und fand mich.

Der Herr gebe ihm, dass er Erbarmung finde vor dem Herrn an jenem Tage! Und wie große Dienste er mir in Ephesus geleistet, weißt du am besten.
