- Kapitel 2 -

And so, after these things, David consulted the Lord, saying, “Shall I ascend to one of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Ascend.” And David said, “To where shall I ascend?” And he responded to him, “To Hebron.”

Therefore, David ascended with his two wives, Ahinoam, the Jezreelite, and Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel.

And as for the men who were with him, David led forth each man with his household. And they stayed in the towns of Hebron.

And the men of Judah went and anointed David there, so that he would reign over the house of Judah. And it was reported to David that the men of Jabesh Gilead had buried Saul.

Therefore, David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and he said to them: “Blessed are you to the Lord, who has accomplished this mercy with your lord Saul, so that you would bury him.

And now, certainly, the Lord will repay to you mercy and truth. But I also will act with favor, because you have accomplished this word.

Let your hands be strengthened, and be sons of fortitude. For even though your lord Saul has died, still the house of Judah has anointed me as king over them.”

Ish-bosheth Made King of Israel

Then Abner, the son of Ner, the leader of the army of Saul, took Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, and he led him around, throughout the camp.

And he appointed him as king over Gilead, and over Geshuri, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all of Israel.

Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, was forty years old when he had begun to rule over Israel. And he reigned for two years. For only the house of Judah followed David.(a)

And the number of the days, during which David was staying and ruling in Hebron over the house of Judah, was seven years and six months.

The Battle of Gibeon

And Abner, the son of Ner, and the youths of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, went out from the camp to Gibeon.

Therefore, Joab, the son of Zeruiah, and the youths of David, went out and met them beside the pool of Gibeon. And when they had convened together, they sat down opposite one another: these on one side of the pool, and those on the other side.

And Abner said to Joab, “Let the youths rise up and play before us.” And Joab answered, “Let them rise up.”

Therefore, they rose up and crossed over, twelve in number of Benjamin, from the side of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, and twelve of the youths of David.

And each one, taking hold of his peer by the head, fixed a sword into the side of his adversary, and they fell down together. And the name of that place was called: The Field of the Valiant in Gibeon.

And a very harsh war rose up on that day. And Abner, with the men of Israel, was put to flight by the youths of David.

Now the three sons of Zeruiah were in that place: Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel. And Asahel was a very swift runner, like one of the deer that lives in the forest.

And Asahel pursued Abner, and he did not turn aside to the right, nor to the left, to cease in the pursuit of Abner.

And so, Abner looked behind his back, and he said, “Are you not Asahel?” And he responded, “I am.”

And Abner said to him, “Go to the right, or to the left, and apprehend one of the youths, and take his spoils for yourself.” But Asahel was not willing to cease from pursuing him closely.

And again, Abner said to Asahel: “Withdraw, and do not choose to follow me. Otherwise, I will be compelled to stab you to the ground, and I will not be able to lift up my face before your brother, Joab.”

But he disdained to heed him, and he was not willing to turn aside. Therefore, turning, Abner struck him with his spear in the groin, and he pierced him through, and he died in the same place. And all those who would pass by the place, in which Asahel had fallen and died, would stand still.

Now while Joab and Abishai were pursuing Abner as he fled, the sun set. And they went as far as the Hill of the Aqueduct, which is opposite the valley on the way of the desert in Gibeon.

And the sons of Benjamin gathered themselves to Abner. And being joined in one battle line, they stood at the summit of a hill.

And Abner cried out to Joab, and he said: “Will your sword rage unto utter destruction? Are you ignorant that it is perilous to act in desperation? How long will you not tell the people to cease from the pursuit of their brothers?”

And Joab said: “As the Lord lives, if you had spoken in the morning, the people would have withdrawn from pursuing their brothers.”

Therefore, Joab sounded the trumpet, and the entire army stood still, and they did not pursue after Israel any more, and they did not engage in conflict.

Then Abner and his men went away, all that night, through the plains. And they crossed the Jordan, and having roamed throughout all of Beth-horon, they arrived in the camp.

But Joab, returning after he had released Abner, gathered together all the people. And of David’s youths, they were missing nineteen men, aside from Asahel.

But of Benjamin and of the men who were with Abner, the servants of David had struck three hundred and sixty, who also died.

And they took Asahel, and they buried him in the sepulcher of his father at Bethlehem. And Joab, and the men who were with him, walked throughout the night, and they arrived in Hebron at the very break of day.

David wird zum König von Juda gesalbt

Hierauf befragte David den Herrn und sprach: Soll ich in eine von den Städten Judas hinaufziehen? Und der Herr sprach zu ihm: Ziehe hinauf! David sprach: Wohin soll ich ziehen? Und er antwortete ihm: Nach Hebron.

So zog David denn mit seinen beiden Frauen, Achinoam, der Jezrahelitin, und Abigail, dem Weibe Nabals von Karmel, hinauf,

aber auch seine Leute nahm David alle mit sich, samt ihren Familien, und sie ließen sich in den Ortschaften von Hebron nieder.

Da kamen die Männer von Juda und salbten David daselbst zum Könige über das Haus Juda. Und man berichtete David, dass die Männer von Jabes Galaad Saul begraben hätten.

Da sandte David Boten zu den Männern von Jabes Galaad und ließ ihnen sagen: Gesegnet seiet ihr von dem Herrn, dass ihr diese Barmherzigkeit an Saul, euerm Herrn, getan und ihn begraben habt!

Der Herr zwar wird euch die Barmherzigkeit und Treue vergelten, aber auch ich will euch Dank dafür erzeigen, dass ihr dies getan habt.

So mögen nun eure Hände stark sein und ihr euch als tapfere Männer zeigen; denn wenn auch Saul, euer Herr gestorben, so hat doch das Haus Juda mich zum Könige über sich gesalbt.

Ischboschet wird König von Israel

Abner aber, der Sohn Ners, der Heerführer Sauls, nahm Isboseth, den Sohn Sauls, und führte ihn in der Lagerstadt herum,

und setzte ihn als König über Galaad und über Gessuri und über Jezrahel und über Ephraim und über Benjamin und über das gesamte Israel ein.

Vierzig Jahre war Isboseth, der Sohn Sauls, alt, als er König ward über Israel und er herrschte zwei Jahre; einzig aber das Haus Juda hielt zu David.

Die Zahl der Tage, welche David in Hebron lebte als König über das Haus Juda, waren sieben Jahre und sechs Monate.

Israel und Juda im Krieg

Und Abner, der Sohn Ners, zog mit den Leuten Isboseths, des Sohnes Sauls, aus der Lagerstadt nach Gabaon.

Ebenso zogen Joab, der Sohn Sarvias, und die Diener Davids aus und stießen auf sie beim Teiche von Gabaon. Als sie sich dort getroffen hatten, lagerten sie sich einander gegenüber, die einen auf der einen Seite des Teiches, die anderen auf der anderen Seite.

Da sprach Abner zu Joab: Lass einige Jünglinge hervortreten und vor uns ein Kampfspiel halten! Joab antwortete: Sie mögen hervortreten!

Sie traten also hervor und es gingen zwölf an der Zahl von Benjamin, von der Seite Isboseths, des Sohnes Sauls, und zwölf von den Leuten Davids einander entgegen.

Ein jeder ergriff den Kopf des andern und stieß dem Gegner das Schwert in die Seite und sie fielen mitsammen und man nannte den Namen dieses Ortes Heldenacker bei Gabaon.

Da entspann sich an jenem Tage ein sehr harter Streit, und Abner und die Männer von Israel wurden von den Leuten Davids in die Flucht geschlagen.

Nun waren daselbst drei Söhne Sarvias: Joab, Abisai und Asael; Asael war ein sehr schneller Läufer, wie eines von den Rehen, welche sich in den Wäldern aufhalten.

Und Asael verfolgte den Abner, ohne zur Rechten oder zur Linken abzuweichen und ohne von der Verfolgung Abners abzulassen.

Da schaute Abner um sich und sprach: Bist du Asael? Er antwortete: Ich bin es.

Abner sprach zu ihm: Wende dich zur Rechten oder zur Linken und greife einen von den jungen Leuten und nimm dir dessen Rüstung! Aber Asael wollte nicht aufhören, auf ihn einzudringen.

Da sprach Abner nochmals zu Asael: Lass ab und verfolge mich nicht, das ich nicht gezwungen sei, dich zu Boden zu strecken; denn ich könnte mein Angesicht nicht mehr zu deinem Bruder Joab erheben.

Da er es aber verschmähte, auf ihn zu hören und nicht weichen wollte, wandte Abner seinen Speer und stieß ihn damit in den Unterleib und durchbohrte ihn und er starb an derselben Stelle und alle, die an dem Orte vorüberkamen, an dem Asael gefallen und gestorben war, blieben stehen.

Während aber Joab und Abisai dem flüchtigen Abner nachsetzten, ging die Sonne unter und sie kamen bis zu dem Hügel der Wasserleitung, der dem Tale gegenüber liegt am Wege nach der Wüste von Gabaon.

Da sammelten sich die Söhne Benjamins um Abner und bildeten einen geschlossenen Haufen und stellten sich auf der Spitze eines Hügels auf.

Und Abner rief Joab an und sprach: Soll dein Schwert bis zur Vernichtung wüten? Weißt du nicht, dass die Verzweiflung gefährlich ist? wie lange noch soll es dauern, bis du dem Volke sagst, dass es ablasse, seine Brüder zu verfolgen?

Joab antwortete: So wahr der Herr lebt, hättest du geredet, das Volk hätte seit dem Morgen schon abgelassen, seine Brüder zu verfolgen!

Hierauf ließ Joab in die Posaune stoßen, da blieb das ganze Heer stehen und sie verfolgten Israel nicht weiter und standen vom Kampfe ab.

Abner aber und seine Mannen zogen durch die Ebene diese ganze Nacht hindurch, alsdann überschritten sie den Jordan und durchzogen ganz Bethhoron und kamen in die Lagerstadt.

Als nun Joab, von Abner ablassend, zurückgekehrt war, sammelte er das ganze Volk und es fehlten von den Leuten Davids neunzehn Mann außer Asael.

Die Leute Davids aber hatten von Benjamin und von den Männern, die bei Abner waren, dreihundert und sechzig erschlagen, die den Tod erlitten.

Und sie nahmen Asael und begruben ihn im Grabe seines Vaters in Bethlehem; dann gingen Joab und die Männer, die bei ihm waren, die ganze Nacht hindurch und kamen, als der Morgen anbrach, nach Hebron.
