- Kapitel 13 -

Now after these things, it happened that Amnon, the son of David, was in love with the very beautiful sister of Absalom, the son of David, and she was called Tamar.

And he pined for her exceedingly, so much so that, out of love for her, he became ill. For, since she was a virgin, it seemed a difficulty to him that he would do anything dishonest with her.

Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, the brother of David: a very prudent man.(a)

And he said to him: “Why are you becoming so thin from day to day, O son of the king? Why won’t you tell me?” And Amnon said to him, “I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom.”

And Jonadab said to him: “Lie down upon your bed, and feign sickness. And when your father will come to visit you, say to him: ‘I ask you to let my sister Tamar come to me, so that she may give me food, and may make a small meal, so that I may eat it from her hand.’ ”

And so, Amnon lay down, and he began to act as if he were ill. And when the king had come to visit him, Amnon said to the king, “I beg you to let my sister Tamar come to me, and make in my sight two little portions of food, so that I take it from her hand.”

Therefore, David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Come to the house of your brother Amnon, and make a small meal for him.”

And Tamar went into the house of her brother Amnon. But he was lying down. And taking flour, she mixed it. And dissolving it in his sight, she cooked little portions of food.

And taking what she had cooked, she poured it out, and she set it before him. But he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send everyone away from me.” And when they had sent everyone away,

Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, so that I may eat from your hand.” Therefore, Tamar took the little portions of food that she had made, and she brought them to her brother Amnon in the bedroom.

And when she had presented the food to him, he took hold of her, and he said, “Come lie with me, my sister.”

She answered him: “Do not do so, my brother! Do not force me. For no such thing must be done in Israel. Do not choose to do this senseless act.

For I will not be able to bear my shame. And you will be like one of the foolish in Israel. For it is better to speak to the king, and he will not deny me to you.”

But he was not willing to agree to her petition. Instead, prevailing by strength, he forced her, and he lay with her.

And Amnon held hatred for her with an exceedingly great hatred, so much so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her before. And Amnon said to her, “Rise up, and go away.”

And she answered him, “This evil is greater, which you are now doing against me in driving me away, than what you did before.” But he was not willing to listen to her.

Instead, calling the servants who were ministering to him, he said, “Cast this woman out from me, and close the door behind her.”

Now she was clothed with an ankle-length robe. For the virgin daughters of the king made use of this kind of garment. And so, his servant cast her out, and he closed the door behind her.

And she sprinkled ashes upon her head, and she tore her ankle-length robe. And placing her hands upon her head, she went forth, walking and crying out.

Then her brother Absalom said to her: “Has your brother Amnon lain with you? But now, sister, be quiet. For he is your brother. And you should not afflict your heart because of this matter.” And so, Tamar remained, wasting away in the house of her brother Absalom.

And when king David had heard about these things, he was deeply grieved. But he was not willing to afflict the spirit of his son Amnon. For he loved him, since he was his firstborn.

Yet Absalom did not speak to Amnon, neither good nor evil. For Absalom hated Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.

Absalom’s Revenge on Amnon

Then, after the time of two years, it happened that the sheep of Absalom were being shorn in Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim. And Absalom invited all the sons of the king.

And he went to the king, and he said to him: “Behold, the sheep of your servant are being shorn. I ask that the king, with his servants, may come to his servant.”

And the king said to Absalom: “Do not, my son, do not choose to ask that we may all come and be a burden to you.” Then, after he urged him, and he had refused to go, he blessed him.

And Absalom said, “If you are not willing to come, I beg you, at least let my brother Amnon come with us.” And the king said to him, “It is not necessary that he go with you.”

But Absalom pressed him, and so he sent with him Amnon and all the sons of the king. And Absalom made a feast, like the feast of a king.

Then Absalom commanded his servants, saying: “Observe when Amnon will have become drunk with wine. And when I say to you, ‘Strike and kill him!’ do not be afraid. For it is I who commands you. Be strong and valiant men.”

Therefore, the servants of Absalom acted against Amnon, just as Absalom had commanded them. And all the sons of the king rose up, and each one climbed upon his mule and fled.

And while they were still traveling on the journey, a rumor reached David, saying, “Absalom has struck down all the sons of the king, and there is not one of them remaining.”

And so the king rose up, and he tore his garments, and he fell upon the ground. And all his servants, who were standing near him, tore their garments.

But Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, responding, said: “My lord the king should not consider that all the sons of the king have been slain. Amnon alone is dead. For he was set against by the mouth of Absalom from the day that he raped his sister Tamar.

Now therefore, let not my lord the king set this word in his heart, saying, ‘All the sons of the king have been slain.’ For only Amnon is dead.”

Absalom Flees to Geshur

Now Absalom fled. And the young man keeping watch, lifted up his eyes and gazed out. And behold, many people were arriving along a remote road at the side of the mountain.(b)

And Jonadab said to the king: “Behold, the sons of the king are here. In accord with the word of your servant, so it has happened.”

And when he had ceased speaking, the sons of the king also appeared. And entering, they lifted up their voice, and they wept. And the king also, and all his servants, wept with an exceedingly great weeping.

But Absalom, fleeing, went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. Then David mourned for his son every day.

Now after he had fled and had arrived in Geshur, Absalom was in that place for three years. And king David ceased to pursue Absalom, because he had been consoled over the passing of Amnon.

Amnon und Tamar

Es begab sich aber hiernach, dass Ammon, der Sohn Davids, die Schwester Absaloms, des Sohnes Davids, Thamar geheißen, lieb gewann, die sehr schön war,

und seine Neigung zu ihr wurde so heftig dass er aus Liebe zu ihr krank wurde; denn da sie eine Jungfrau war, schien es ihm schwer, etwas Unehrbares mit ihr zu begehen.

Nun hatte Amnon einen Freund, namens Jonadab, einen Sohn Semmaas, des Bruders Davids, der ein sehr schlauer Mann war.

Dieser sprach zu ihm: Warum wirst du so mager, o Königssohn, von Tag zu Tag? Warum sagst du es mir nicht? Da sprach Amnon zu ihm: Ich liebe Thamar, die Schwester meines Bruders Absalom.

Jonadab antwortete ihm: Lege dich auf dein Bett und stelle dich krank, und wenn dein Vater kommt, um dich zu besuchen, so sage zu ihm: Ich bitte, lass doch meine Schwester Thamar kommen, dass sie mir Speise reiche und mir ein Gericht bereite, damit ich aus ihrer Hand esse.

Amnon also legte sich nieder und stellte sich krank, und als der König kam, um ihn zu besuchen, sprach Amnon zu dem Könige: Ich bitte, lass doch meine Schwester Thamar kommen, dass sie vor meinen Augen zwei Speisen koche, damit ich sie aus ihrer Hand empfange.

Da sandte David in das Haus der Thamar und ließ ihr sagen: Komm in das Haus deines Bruders Amnon und bereite ihm ein Gericht!

Als nun Thamar in das Haus ihres Bruders Amnon kam, lag dieser auf dem Bett. Und sie nahm Mehl, mischte es, machte es dünn und kochte die Speisen vor seinen Augen.

Dann nahm sie, was sie gekocht hatte, goss es aus und setzte es ihm vor; aber Amnon wollte nicht essen und sprach: Lasset alle von mir hinausgehen! Als man nun alle hatte hinausgehen lassen,

sprach Amnon zu Thamar: Bringe das Essen her in das innere Gemach, das ich aus deiner Hand esse! Da nahm Thamar die Speisen, welche sie gemacht, und brachte sie zu Amnon, ihrem Bruder, in das innere Gemach.

Als sie ihm aber das Essen darreichte, ergriff er sie und sprach: Komm und lege dich zu mir, meine Schwester!

Sie aber antwortete ihm: Nicht doch, mein Bruder, tue mir nicht Gewalt an, denn dies ist nicht recht in Israel; begehe doch diese Torheit nicht!

Ich werde ja meine Schande nicht ertragen können und du wirst wie einer von den Toren in Israel gelten; rede doch vielmehr mit dem Könige und er wird mich dir nicht versagen.

Er aber wollte ihren Bitten nicht nachgeben, sondern, da er stärker war, überwältigte er sie und wohnte ihr bei.

Darauf aber fasste Amnon eine überaus heftige Abneigung gegen sie, so dass die Abneigung, die er gegen sie fasste, größer war als die Liebe, die er zuvor für sie gehegt hatte. Und Amnon sprach zu ihr: Mache dich auf und gehe fort!

Sie antwortete ihm: Das Böse, das du mir nun antust, indem du mich fortweisest, ist größer als das, was du mir zuvor angetan hast. Aber er wollte nicht auf sie hören,

sondern rief den Diener und sprach: Schaffe diese von mir hinaus und schließe die Tür hinter ihr zu!

Sie trug aber ein langes Gewand; solcher Kleider nämlich bedienten sich die Töchter des Königs, die Jungfrauen waren. Sein Diener also trieb sie hinaus und schloss die Tür hinter ihr zu.

Da streute sie Asche auf ihr Haupt, zerriss ihr langes Gewand, legte die Hände auf den Kopf und ging wehklagend einher.

Ihr Bruder Absalom aber sprach zu ihr: Hat dein Bruder Amnon dir etwa beigewohnt? Nun wohl, meine Schwester, schweige still, es ist dein Bruder, und betrübe dein Herz nicht deshalb! So blieb Thamar, sich abhärmend, im Hause ihres Bruders Absalom.

Als aber der König David diese Dinge hörte, ward er sehr betrübt, doch wollte er das Herz seines Sohnes Amnon nicht betrüben; denn er liebte ihn, weil er sein Erstgeborner war.

Absalom aber redete nicht mit Amnon, weder Böses noch Gutes, denn Absalom hasste Amnon, weil er seine Schwester Thamar geschändet hatte.

Absalom ermordet Amnon

Es begab sich aber nach zwei Jahren, dass Absaloms Schafe in Baalhasor, welches bei Ephraim liegt, geschoren wurden, und Absalom lud alle Söhne des Königs dazu ein.

Auch zu dem Könige kam er und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, die Schafe deines Dieners werden geschoren, der König wolle doch mit seinen Dienern zu seinem Diener kommen.

Der König aber sprach zu Absalom: Nicht doch, mein Sohn! Verlange doch nicht, dass wir alle kommen und dir beschwerlich fallen. Und obwohl jener in ihn drang, wollte er doch nicht gehen und segnete ihn.

Da sprach Absalom: Wenn du nicht kommen willst, so möge doch wenigstens mein Bruder Amnon mit uns kommen. Der König aber sprach zu ihm: Es ist nicht nötig, dass er mit dir gehe.

Absalom aber drang in ihn, so dass er Amnon und alle Söhne des Königs mit ihm ziehen ließ. Absalom aber hatte ein Gastmahl zubereitet, wie das Gastmahl eines Königs.

Seinen Dienern aber hatte er den Auftrag gegeben: Habet Acht, wenn Amnon vom Weine trunken geworden ist und ich euch sage: Schlaget ihn nieder und tötet ihn! so fürchtet euch nicht; denn ich bin es, der es euch befiehlt; seid mutig und zeiget euch als Männer!

So taten denn die Diener Absaloms gegen Amnon, wie Absalom ihnen befohlen hatte. Alle Söhne des Königs aber erhoben sich, bestiegen ihre Maultiere und flohen.

Während sie nun noch auf dem Wege waren, kam das Gerücht zu David: Absalom hat alle Söhne des Königs erschlagen und es ist auch nicht einer von ihnen übrig geblieben.

Da erhob sich der König, zerriss seine Kleider und warf sich zur Erde nieder und alle seine Diener, die um ihn waren, zerrissen ihre Kleider.

Jonadab aber, der Sohn Semmaas, des Bruders Davids, nahm das Wort und sprach: Mein Herr, der König, glaube nicht, dass alle Söhne des Königs erschlagen sind, Amnon allein ist tot! Denn nach Absaloms Ausspruch war ihm der Tod zugedacht seit dem Tage, da er dessen Schwester Thamar Gewalt angetan.

So nehme nun mein Herr und König jenes Gerücht nicht zu Herzen, gemäß dem alle Söhne erschlagen sind, denn Amnon allein ist tot.

Absalom flieht nach Geshur

Absalom aber ward flüchtig. Als nun der Wächter seine Augen erhob und ausschaute, siehe, da kam viel Volk auf einem Nebenweg daher von der Seite des Berges.

Jonadab aber sprach zu dem Könige: Siehe, die Söhne des Königs sind da! Wie dein Diener gesagt, so ist es geschehen.

Als er ausgeredet hatte, erschienen auch die Söhne des Königs, und bei ihrem Eintritte erhoben sie ihre Stimme und weinten, aber auch der König und alle seine Diener weinten und klagten heftig.

Absalom aber ging auf seiner Flucht zu Tholomai, dem Sohne Ammiuds, dem Könige von Gessur. Und David betrauerte seinen Sohn unaufhörlich.

Als aber Absalom auf seiner Flucht nach Gessur gekommen war, blieb er daselbst drei Jahre.

Und der König David hörte auf, Absalom zu verfolgen, denn er hatte sich über den Tod Amnons getröstet.
