- Kapitel 24 -

(2 Kings 12:1–16)

Joash was seven years old when he had begun to reign. And he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Zibiah, from Beersheba.(a)

And he did what is good before the Lord during all the days of Jehoiada, the priest.

Now Jehoiada gave to him two wives, from whom he conceived sons and daughters.

After these things, it pleased Joash to repair the house of the Lord.

And he gathered together the priests and Levites, and he said to them: “Go out to the cities of Judah, and collect from all of Israel money to repair the surfaces of the temple of your God, throughout each year. And do this promptly.” But the Levites acted negligently.(b)

And the king summoned Jehoiada, the leader, and he said to him: “Why was there no concern with you, so that you would compel the Levites to bring, from Judah and from Jerusalem, the money that was appointed by Moses, the servant of the Lord, so as to bring it, from the entire multitude of Israel, to the tabernacle of the testimony?

For that very impious woman Athaliah and her sons have destroyed the house of God, and they have adorned the shrine of Baal from all the things that had been sanctified in the temple of the Lord.”

Therefore, the king instructed, and they made an ark. And they placed it beside the gate of the house of the Lord, on the outside.

And they proclaimed, in Judah and Jerusalem, that each one should bring to the Lord the money that Moses, the servant of God, appointed in the desert, concerning all of Israel.

And all the leaders and all the people rejoiced. And upon entering, they together took and placed so much into the ark of the Lord that it was filled.

And when it was time for them to bring the ark before the king by the hands of the Levites, for they saw that there was much money, the scribe of the king, and the one whom the high priest had appointed, entered. And they poured out the money that was in the ark. Then they carried the ark back to its place. And they did this on each day. And an immense sum of money was gathered.

And the king and Jehoiada gave it to those who were in charge of the works of the house of the Lord. Then with it they hired hewers of stone, and artisans of every kind, so that they might repair the house of the Lord, and also so that the works of iron and of brass, which had begun to fall, would be reinforced.

And those who were hired were working industriously. And the breach in the walls was healed by their hands. And they returned the house of the Lord to a pristine state. And they caused it stand firm.

And when they had completed all the works, they brought the remaining part of the money before the king and Jehoiada. And from it, the vessels of the temple were made, for the ministry and for the holocausts, including bowls and other vessels of gold and silver. And holocausts were being offered in the house of the Lord continually, during all the days of Jehoiada.(c)

Jehoiada’s Death and Burial

But Jehoiada was old and full of days. And he died when he was one hundred thirty years old.

And they buried him in the City of David, with the kings, because he had done good to Israel and to his house.

The Wickedness of Joash

Then, after Jehoiada passed away, the leaders of Judah entered and reverenced the king. And he was enticed by their obsequiousness, and so he acquiesced to them.

And they abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and they served sacred groves and graven images. And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of this sin.

And he sent prophets to them, so that they might return to the Lord. And though they were offering testimony, they were not willing to listen to them.

And so the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest. And he stood in the sight of the people, and he said to them: “Thus says the Lord God: Why have you transgressed the precept of the Lord, though it was not to your benefit, and why have you abandoned the Lord, so that he would then abandon you?”

And gathering together against him, they stoned him, beside the place of the king, in the atrium of the house of the Lord.

And king Joash did not remember the mercy with which Jehoiada, his father, had treated him; instead he put to death his son. And as he was dying, he said: “May the Lord see and take account.”

The Death of Joash

(2 Kings 12:17–21)

And when a year had turned, the army of Syria ascended against him. And they went to Judah and Jerusalem. And they put to death all the leaders of the people. And they sent all the spoils to the king of Damascus.

And although certainly there had arrived a very small number of Syrians, the Lord delivered into their hands an immense multitude. For they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers. Also, against Joash they executed disgraceful judgments.

And upon departing, they left him greatly debilitated. Then his servants rose up against him, in vengeance for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest. And they killed him on his bed, and he died. And they buried him in the City of David, but not in the sepulchers of the kings.

Truly, those who ambushed him were Zabad, the son of an Ammonite woman named Shimeath, and Jehozabad, the son of a Moabite woman named Shimrith.

But concerning his sons, and the sum of money that had been amassed under him, and the repairing of the house of God, these things have been written more diligently in the book of kings. Then his son, Amaziah, reigned in his place.

(b)24:5 The temple surfaces had been covered with gold. So when Athaliah and other persons looted the temple, and took things from the temple to use in false worship, they especially took the gold from the various surfaces. They used this gold to adorn the shrine of Baal, and probably also as money for whatever they desired. Anyone who would steal from the temple of God at Jerusalem, for pagan worship, would not be able to refrain from using that gold also for themselves.(Conte)

Joas repariert den Tempel

(2. Könige 12,1-16)

Sieben Jahre war Joas alt, als er König wurde, und vierzig Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem; seine Mutter hieß Sebia aus Bersabee.

Er tat, was vor dem Herrn gut war, so lange Jojada, der Priester, lebte.

Jojada aber gab ihm zwei Frauen und er zeugte mit diesen Söhne und Töchter.

Darnach beschloss Joas, das Haus des Herrn wiederherzustellen.

Und er versammelte die Priester und Leviten und sprach zu ihnen: Gehet aus in die Städte Judas und sammelt von ganz Israel Geld, um den Tempel eures Gottes Jahr um Jahr auszubessern; die Leviten aber taten es etwas saumselig.

Da berief der König Jojada ihr Oberhaupt und sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du es dir nicht angelegen sein lassen, die Leviten anzuhalten, dass sie aus Juda und Jerusalem das Geld einzögen, welches von Moses, dem Diener des Herrn, festgesetzt ist, dass die ganze Gemeinde Israel es in das Zelt des Zeugnisses bringe?

Denn die gottlose Athalia und ihre Söhne haben das Haus Gottes verwüstet und haben mit allem, was als Weihegeschenk im Tempel des Herrn niedergelegt war, den Tempel der Baale geschmückt.

Alsbald befahl der König, eine Lade zu machen, und sie stellten dieselbe außen an dem Tore des Hauses des Herrn auf.

Und es ward in Juda und Jerusalem ausgerufen, dass ein jeder die Abgabe für den Herrn darbringen sollte, welche Moses, der Diener Gottes, ganz Israel in der Wüste auferlegt hatte.

Da freuten sich alle Fürsten und das ganze Volk und kamen und legten in die Lade des Herrn und warfen hinein, bis sie voll war.

Und so oft es Zeit war, durch die Leviten die Lade vor den König zu bringen (sie sahen nämlich, dass es viel Geld war), gingen der Schreiber des Königs und einer, den der Hohepriester beauftragt hatte, hin und schütteten das Geld aus, das in der Lade war, und trugen die Lade wieder an ihren Ort; so taten sie Tag für Tag und es ward unzählbares Geld gesammelt.

Dies gaben der König und Jojada denen, welche die Arbeit am Hause des Herrn leiteten; diese aber dingten dafür Steinhauer und Künstler für die einzelnen Arbeiten, dass sie das Haus des Herrn wiederherstellten, dazu Schmiede in Eisen und Erz, damit das, was einzufallen anfing, gestützt würde.

Und da die, welche arbeiteten, mit großem Eifer an das Werk gingen, schlossen ihre Hände die Risse der Wände und sie brachten das Haus des Herrn wieder in den vorigen Stand, fest und sicher.

Als sie nun alle Arbeiten vollendet hatten, brachten sie den übrigen Teil des Geldes vor den König und Jojada und man machte dafür die Gerätschaften des Tempels für den Dienst und für die Brandopfer und die Schalen und die übrigen goldenen und silbernen Gerätschaften; dazu wurden beständig Brandopfer im Hause des Herrn dargebracht, alle Tage Jojadas.

Abtrünnigkeit von Joas

Jojada aber ward alt und hochbetagt und starb, hundertunddreißig Jahre alt,

und man begrub ihn in der Davidsstadt bei den Königen, weil er an Israel und an seinem Hause Gutes getan hatte.

Nachdem aber Jojada gestorben war, kamen die Fürsten von Juda und fielen vor dem Könige nieder, welcher, durch ihre Ehrerbietung gewonnen, ihren Wünschen Gehör gab.

Und da sie den Tempel des Herrn, des Gottes ihrer Väter, im Stiche ließen und den Hainen und geschnitzten Bildern dienten, kam um dieser Sünden willen ein Zorngericht über Juda und Jerusalem.

Und er sandte Propheten zu ihnen, dass sie sich wieder zu dem Herrn bekehren sollten; diese gaben Zeugnis, aber jene wollten nicht auf dieselben hören.

Der Geist Gottes kam also auf Zacharias, den Sohn Jojadas, den Priester, und dieser trat vor das Volk und sprach zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr, Gott: Warum übertretet ihr das Gebot des Herrn, da es euch nicht gut sein wird, und habt den Herrn verlassen, so dass er euch verließ?

Da rotteten sie sich wider ihn zusammen und steinigten ihn auf Befehl des Königs im Vorhofe des Hauses des Herrn.

Und der König Joas gedachte nicht der Barmherzigkeit, welche Jojada, dessen Vater, ihn erwiesen, sondern ließ dessen Sohn töten. Dieser aber rief sterbend: Der Herr sehe es und räche es!

Tod von Joas

(2. Könige 12,17-21)

Als nun ein Jahr um war, zog ein Heer aus Syrien gegen ihn herauf und es kam nach Juda und Jerusalem und tötete alle Fürsten des Volkes und alle Beute sandte es dem Könige nach Damaskus.

Und obwohl die Syrer nur in sehr geringer Zahl gekommen waren, gab der Herr doch eine unzählige Menge in ihre Hände, weil diese den Herrn, den Gott ihrer Väter, verlassen hatten; so übten jene an Joas ein schmachvolles Gericht.

Als sie abzogen, ließen sie ihn in großen Leiden zurück. Da erhoben sich seine Diener wider ihn, um das Blut des Sohnes Jojadas, des Priesters, zu rächen, und ermordeten ihn in seinem Bette; so starb er und man begrub ihn in der Davidsstadt, aber nicht in der Grabstätte der Könige.

Die ihm aber nachstellten, waren: Zabad, der Sohn Semmaaths, der Ammanitin, und Jozabad, der Sohn Semariths, der Moabitin.

Seine Söhne und die Höhe des Geldes, welches unter ihm gesammelt ward, und die Wiederherstellung des Hauses Gottes sind im Buche der Könige genauer beschrieben; sein Sohn Amasias aber ward König an seiner Statt.
