- Kapitel 15 -

And Samuel said to Saul: “The Lord sent me, so that I would anoint you as king over his people Israel. Now therefore, listen to the voice of the Lord.

‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: I have taken account of all that Amalek has done to Israel, how he stood against him in the way, when he ascended from Egypt.

Now therefore, go and strike Amalek, and demolish all that is his. You shall not spare him, and you shall not covet anything out of the things that are his. Instead, kill from man even to woman, and little ones as well as infants, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”(a)

And so, Saul instructed the people, and he numbered them like lambs: two hundred thousand foot soldiers, and ten thousand men of Judah.

And when Saul had arrived as far as the city of Amalek, he placed ambushes at the torrent.

And Saul said to the Kenite: “Go away, withdraw, and descend from Amalek. Otherwise, I will include you with him. For you showed mercy to all the sons of Israel, when they ascended from Egypt.” And so the Kenite withdrew from the midst of Amalek.

And Saul struck down Amalek, from Havilah even until you arrive at Shur, which is opposite the region of Egypt.

And he apprehended Agag, the king of Amalek, alive. But all the common people he put to death with the edge of the sword.

And Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the flocks of sheep, and of the herds, and the garments, and the rams, and all that was beautiful, and they were not willing to destroy them. Yet truly, whatever was vile or worthless, these they demolished.

Samuel Denounces Saul

Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying

“It displeases me that I have appointed Saul as king. For he has forsaken me, and he has not fulfilled the work of my words.” And Samuel was greatly saddened, and he cried out to the Lord, all night long

And when Samuel had risen while it was still dark, so that he might go to Saul in the morning, it was reported to Samuel that Saul had arrived at Carmel, and that he had erected for himself a triumphant arch. And, while returning, he had continued on and descended to Gilgal. Therefore, Samuel went to Saul. And Saul was offering a holocaust to the Lord, from the best of the spoils, which he had brought from Amalek.

And when Samuel had gone to Saul, Saul said to him: “You are the blessed of the Lord. I have fulfilled the word of the Lord.”

And Samuel said, “Then what is this voice of the flocks, which resounds in my ears, and of the herds, which I am hearing?”

And Saul said: “They have brought these from Amalek. For the people spared the best of the sheep and of the herds, so that they might be immolated to the Lord your God. Yet truly, the remainder we have slain.”

Then Samuel said to Saul, “Permit me, and I will reveal to you what the Lord has said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”

And Samuel said: “Was it not when you were little in your own eyes that you were made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord anointed you as king over Israel.

And the Lord sent you on the way, and he said: ‘Go and put to death the sinners of Amalek. And you shall fight against them, even unto utter annihilation.’

Why then, did you not listen to the voice of the Lord? Instead, you turned to the spoils, and you did evil in the eyes of the Lord.”

And Saul said to Samuel: “On the contrary, I did listen to the voice of the Lord, and I walked in the way along which the Lord sent me, and I led back Agag, the king of Amalek, and I put to death Amalek.

But the people took some of the spoils, sheep and oxen, as the first-fruits of those things that were slain, to immolate to the Lord their God at Gilgal.”

And Samuel said: “Does the Lord want holocausts and victims, and not instead that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifice. And to heed is greater than to offer the fat of rams.

Therefore, it is like the sin of paganism to rebel. And it is like the crime of idolatry to refuse to obey. For this reason, therefore, because you have rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has also rejected you from being king.”

Saul’s Confession

And Saul said to Samuel: “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the word of the Lord, and your words, by fearing the people and obeying their voice.

But now, I beg you, to bear my sin, and to return with me, so that I may adore the Lord.”

And Samuel said to Saul: “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

And Samuel turned away, so that he might depart. But Saul took hold of the edge of his cloak, and it tore.

And Samuel said to him: “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you this day. And he has delivered it to your neighbor, who is better than you are.

Moreover, the One who triumphs within Israel will not spare, and he will not be moved to repentance. For he is not a man, that he should repent.”

Then he said: “I have sinned. But now, honor me before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, so that I may adore the Lord your God.”

Therefore, Samuel turned again after Saul. And Saul adored the Lord.

And Samuel said, “Bring near to me Agag, the king of Amalek.” And Agag, very fat and trembling, was presented to him. And Agag said, “Does bitter death separate in this manner?”

And Samuel said, “Just as your sword caused women to be without their children, so will your mother be without her children among women.” And Samuel cut him into pieces, before the Lord at Gilgal.

Then Samuel went away to Ramah. But Saul ascended to his house at Gibeah.

And Samuel did not see Saul any more, until the day of his death. Yet truly, Samuel mourned for Saul, because the Lord regretted that he had appointed him as king over Israel.(b)

(a)15:3 Child:The great Master of life and death (who cuts off one half of all mankind whilst they are children) has been pleased sometimes to ordain that children should be put to the sword, in detestation of the crimes of their parents, and that they might not live to follow the same wicked ways. Saul verschont König Agag

Einst sprach Samuel zu Saul: Mich hat der Herr gesandt, um dich zum Könige über sein Volk Israel zu salben; so höre nun auf die Stimme des Herrn!

So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen: Ich habe alles erwogen, was Amalek an Israel getan hat, wie er sich ihm in den Weg stellte, als Israel aus Ägypten heraufzog.

So ziehe denn hin und schlage Amalek und vertilge alles, was sein ist; übe keine Schonung an ihm und lass dich nichts von seiner Habe gelüsten, sondern töte Mann und Weib, Kind und Säugling, Rind und Schaf, Kamel und Esel.

Da bot Saul das Volk auf und musterte sie wie Lämmer; zweihunderttausend Mann Fußvolk und zehntausend Mann aus Juda.

Als nun Saul bis zur Stadt der Amalekiter kam, legte er einen Hinterhalt in das Tal.

Und Saul sprach zu den Kinitern: Gehet hinweg, ziehet fort von Amalek, damit ich euch nicht etwa in ihr Schicksal verwickle; denn ihr habt an allen Söhnen Israels Barmherzigkeit geübt, als diese aus Ägypten heraufzogen. Da zogen sich die Kiniter aus der Mitte Amaleks zurück.

Und Saul schlug Amalek von Hevila an bis nach Sur hin, das nach Ägypten zu liegt.

Auch nahm er Agag, den König der Amalekiter, lebendig gefangen; das ganze Volk aber tötete er mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.

Indes Saul und das Volk schonten Agags und der Herden von Schafen und Rindern und der Kleider und Widder, und alles dessen, was schön war, und wollten es nicht vernichten; alles aber, was schlecht und verächtlich war, vertilgten sie.

Saul wird als König abgewählt

Da erging das Wort des Herrn an Samuel, also:

Es reut mich, dass ich Saul zum Könige gemacht habe; denn er hat mich verlassen und meine Worte nicht durch die Tat erfüllt. Und Samuel ward betrübt und rief die ganze Nacht hindurch zu dem Herrn.

Als sich nun Samuel bei Tagesanbruch erhob, um früh zu Saul zu gehen, ward Samuel berichtet, dass Saul nach Karmel gegangen sei und sich einen Siegesbogen errichtet habe und wieder zurückgekehrt, weitergezogen und nach Galgala hinabgegangen sei. Da kam Samuel zu Saul, Saul aber opferte dem Herrn gerade ein Brandopfer von den Erstlingen der Beute, welche er Amalek abgenommen hatte.

Als nun Samuel zu Saul kam, sprach Saul zu ihm: Gesegnet seiest du von dem Herrn! ich habe des Herrn Wort erfüllt.

Da sprach Samuel: Und was ist das für ein Blöken von Herden, welches in meine Ohren tönt, und für ein Brüllen von Rindern, welches ich höre?

Saul sprach: Von Amalek haben sie diese hergebracht; denn das Volk hat die besten Schafe und Rinder verschont, um sie dem Herrn, deinem Gott, zu opfern: das übrige indes haben wir getötet.

Samuel aber sprach zu Saul: Lass mich dir kundtun, was der Herr zu mir in der Nacht gesprochen hat. Er antwortete ihm: Rede!

Da sprach Samuel: Bist du nicht, als du in deinen Augen gering warst, das Haupt über die Stämme Israels geworden? Und hat dich nicht der Herr zum Könige über Israel gesalbt?

Dazu hat der Herr dich auf den Weg gesendet und gesprochen: Ziehe hin und töte die Sünder von Amalek und kämpfe gegen sie bis zu ihrer Vernichtung!

Warum hast du also nicht auf die Stimme des Herrn gehört, sondern hast dich der Beute zugewendet und hast übel getan in den Augen des Herrn?

Da sprach Saul zu Samuel: Ich habe ja auf die Stimme des Herrn gehört und bin den Weg gewandelt, auf den der Herr mich gesandt hat, und habe Agag, den König von Amalek, hergebracht und Amalek getötet.

Aber das Volk nahm von der Beute Schafe und Rinder, das Beste unter dem, was erschlagen wurde, um sie dem Herrn, seinem Gott, in Galgala zu opfern.

Samuel entgegnete: Will der Herr etwa Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer und nicht vielmehr, dass der Stimme des Herrn Gehorsam geleistet werde? Denn Gehorsam ist besser als Schlachtopfer und folgen mehr wert, als das Fett der Widder opfern.

Denn widerspenstig sein, ist wie die Sünde der Wahrsagerei und nicht gehorchen wollen, wie das Laster der Abgötterei. Dafür also, dass du das Wort des Herrn verworfen hast, hat auch dich der Herr verworfen, dass du nicht König seiest.

Saul sprach zu Samuel: Ich habe gesündigt, weil ich des Herrn Rede und deine Worte übertreten habe, aus Furcht vor dem Volke und seiner Stimme gehorchend.

Nun aber bitte ich, nimm meine Sünde hinweg und kehre mit mir um, dass ich den Herrn anbete.

Samuel sprach zu Saul: Ich werde nicht mit dir umkehren. Weil du das Wort des Herrn verworfen hast, so hat der Herr auch dich verworfen, dass du nicht König seiest über Israel.

Als nun Samuel sich umwandte, um wegzugehen, ergriff jener den Zipfel seines Mantels; dieser aber riss ab.

Da sprach Samuel zu ihm: Der Herr hat heute das Königtum über Israel von dir gerissen und es deinem Nächsten gegeben, der besser ist als du.

Und der Sieger in Israel wird nicht schonen und es wird ihn nicht gereuen; denn er ist kein Mensch, dass er Reue empfinden sollte.

Jener aber sprach: Ich habe gesündigt; aber erweise mir jetzt vor den Ältesten meines Volkes und vor Israel Ehre und kehre mit mir um, damit ich den Herrn, deinen Gott, anbete.

Da kehrte Samuel um und folgte Saul; und Saul betete den Herrn an.

Dann sprach Samuel: Führet Agag, den König von Amalek, zu mir her! Da brachte man ihm den Agag, der sehr fett war und zitterte. Und Agag sprach: So also scheidet der bittere Tod?

Samuel sprach: Gleichwie dein Schwert die Frauen kinderlos gemacht hat, so sei auch deine Mutter unter den Frauen kinderlos. Und Samuel hieb ihn in Stücke vor dem Herrn in Galgala.

Darnach ging Samuel nach Ramatha, Saul aber zog in sein Haus nach Gabaa hinauf.

Und Samuel sah den Saul nicht mehr bis zum Tage seines Todes, aber dennoch trauerte Samuel um Saul, weil es den Herrn reute, dass er ihn zum Könige über Israel gesetzt hatte.
