- Kapitel 5 -

Judas and his brethren attack the enemies of their country, and deliver them that were distressed. Josephus and Azarius, attempting contrary to order to fight against their enemies, are defeated.

And it happened that, when the surrounding nations heard that the altar and the sanctuary had been rebuilt as before, they were very angry.

And they intended to destroy the people of Jacob that were among them, and they began to kill some of the people, and to persecute them.

Then Judas defeated in warfare the sons of Esau in Idumea, and those who were in Akrabattene, because they besieged the Israelites, and he struck them with a great scourging.

And he remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, who were a snare and a scandal to the people, lying in ambush for them in the way.

And they were trapped by him in the towers, and he took up a position near them, and he anathematized them, and he burned their towers with fire, along with all who were in them.

Then he crossed over to the sons of Ammon, and he found a strong hand, and an abundant people, and Timothy was their commander.

And he engaged in many battles with them, and they were crushed in their sight, and he struck them down.

And he seized the city of Jazer, and her sister cities, and he returned to Judea.

And the Gentiles, who were in Gilead, gathered together against the Israelites, who were within their borders, to take them away, and so they fled into the fortress of Dathema.

And they sent letters to Judas and his brothers, saying: “The Gentiles all around have been gathering together against us to carry us away.

And they are preparing to come and occupy the fortress into which we have fled. And Timothy is the commander of their army.

Now, therefore, come and rescue us from their hands, for many of us have fallen.

And all our brothers, who were in the places of Tob, have been put to death. And they have led away as captives their wives, and their children, and their spoils. And they have slain nearly a thousand men in that place.”

And while they were still reading these letters, behold, there arrived from Galilee other messengers, with torn garments, who announced according to these words:

saying that those of Ptolemais and Tyre and Sidon have assembled against them, “and all of Galilee has been filled with foreigners, in order to consume us.”

So then, when Judas and the people heard these words, a great assembly came together, to consider what they should do for their brothers who were in trouble and were being assailed by them.

And Judas said to Simon his brother: “Choose men for yourself, and go, and free your brothers in Galilee. But I and my brother Jonathan, will go into the country of Gilead.”

And he left behind Joseph, son of Zachariah, and Azariah, as commanders of the people, with the remainder of the army, in Judea, to guard it.

And he instructed them, saying, “Take charge of this people, but do not go to war against the Gentiles, until we return.”

Now three thousand men were divided to Simon, to go into Galilee, but eight thousand were divided to Judas, to go into the land of Gilead.

And Simon went into Galilee, and he engaged in many battles with the Gentiles, and the Gentiles were crushed before his face, and he pursued them even to the gates of Ptolemais.

And there fell of the Gentiles nearly three thousand men, and he took their spoils.

And he took with him those who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, with their wives and children, and all that was theirs, and he led them into Judea with great rejoicing.

And Judas Maccabeus, and Jonathan his brother, crossed over the Jordan, and they traveled three days’ journey through the desert.

And the Nabateans met them, and they accepted them peacefully, and they described to them all that had happened to their brothers in the land of Gilead,

and that many of them were trapped in Bozrah, and Bosor, and Alema, and in Chaspho, and Maked, and Carnaim. All these are large and fortified cities.

Moreover, they were held in their grasp in the other cities of Gilead, and they had arranged to move their army, on the next day, to these cities, and to seize them, and to destroy them all in one day.

Then Judas and his army unexpectedly turned their path into the desert, to Bosor, and they occupied the city. And he killed every male by the edge of the sword, and took all their spoils, and burned it with fire.

And they arose from there by night, and they went forth all the way to the fortress.

And it happened that, at first light, when they lifted up their eyes, behold, there was a multitude of people, which could not be numbered, bringing ladders and machines, in order to seize the fortress, and to assault them.

And Judas saw that the fight had begun, and the cry of the battle went up to heaven like a trumpet, and a great cry went out of the city.

And he said to his army, “Fight today on behalf of your brothers.”

And he came, with three companies behind them, and they sounded the trumpets, and they cried out in prayer.

And the camp of Timothy knew that it was Maccabeus, and they took flight before his face. And they struck them with a great scourging. And there fell from them in that day nearly eight thousand men.

And Judas diverted to Mizpah, and he fought and seized it. And he killed all of its males, and he took its spoils, and he burned it with fire.

From there, he continued on, and he seized Chaspho, and Maked, and Bosor, and the rest of the cities of Gilead.

But after these events, Timothy gathered together another army, and he positioned his camp opposite Raphon, across the torrent.

And Judas sent men to catch sight of the army. And they reported back to him, saying: “All the nations that surround us have assembled before him, with an exceedingly great army.

And they have brought the Arabians as auxiliaries to them, and they have set up camp across the torrent, in preparation to come against you in battle.” And Judas went to meet them.

And Timothy said to the leaders of his army: “When Judas and his army approach, close to the torrent of water, if he crosses over to us first, we will not be able to withstand him. For he will be able to prevail against us.

If, truly, he is afraid to cross over, and so he sets up camp across the river, we will cross over to them, and we will prevail against him.”

But when Judas approached, close to the torrent of water, he stationed the scribes of the people near the torrent, and he commanded them, saying, “Permit no man to stay behind, but let all come into the battle.”

And he crossed over to them first, and all the people after him. And all the Gentiles were crushed before their face, and they threw away their weapons, and they fled to the temple that was in Carnaim.

And he occupied that city, and he burned the temple with fire, along with all the things that were in it. And Carnaim was subdued, and it could not stand against the face of Judas.

And Judas gathered together all the Israelites who were in the land of Gilead, from the least even to the greatest, with their wives and children, and a very great army, to come into the land of Judah.

And they came as far as Ephron. And this was a great city, positioned at the entrance, strongly fortified, and there was no way to go around it on the right or on the left, but the path was through the midst of it.

And those who were in the city shut themselves in and barricaded the gates with stones. And so Judas sent to them with words of peace,

saying, “Let us cross through your land, to go into our own land, and no one will harm you; we will only cross through on foot.” But they were not willing to open to them.

Then Judas instructed a proclamation to be made in the camp, that they would engage them, each one from the place where he was.

And the men of the army drew close. And he assaulted that city all day and all night. And the city was delivered into his hand.

And they destroyed every male with the edge of the sword, and he eradicated the city, and he took its spoils, and he crossed through the entire city, over those who had been slain.(a)

Then they crossed over the Jordan to the great plain that is opposite the face of Bethshan.

And Judas was gathering the stragglers and exhorting the people, throughout the entire way, until they came into the land of Judah.

And they ascended to mount Zion with joy and gladness, and they offered holocausts, because not one of them had fallen, until they had returned in peace.

Now in the days that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead, and Simon his brother was in Galilee against the face of Ptolemais:

Joseph, the son of Zachariah, and Azariah, the leader of the army, heard good things about the battles that were fought.

And he said, “Let us also make a name for ourselves, and let us go to fight against the Gentiles that are all around us.”

And he gave orders to those who were in his army, and they went out towards Jamnia.

And Gorgias and his men exited the city, to meet them in the fight.

And Joseph and Azariah were forced to flee, even to the borders of Judea. And there fell on that day, from the people of Israel, up to two thousand men, and it was a great defeat for the people.

For they did not listen to Judas and his brothers, supposing that they should act boldly.

But these were not of the offspring of those men by whom salvation was brought to Israel.

And the men of Judah were magnified greatly in the sight of all Israel and of all the nations where their name was heard.

And the people gathered to them with favorable acclamations.

And so Judas and his brothers went out and assailed the sons of Esau, in the land that is toward the south, and he struck Hebron and her sister cities, and he burned its walls and the towers all around it with fire.

And he moved his camp to go into the land of the foreigners, and he traveled through Samaria.

In that day, some priests fell in battle. Since they desired to act boldly, they went out, without counsel, into the battle.

And Judas turned aside to Azotus, into the land of the foreigners, and he destroyed their altars, and he burned the statues of their gods with fire. And he seized the spoils of the cities, and he returned to the land of Judah.

Und es geschah, als die Heiden ringsum vernahmen, dass der Altar und das Heiligtum wie vorher aufgebaut sei, ergrimmten sie sehr

und beschlossen, alle vom Geschlechte Jakobs, die unter ihnen waren, zu vertilgen und begannen, das Volk zu töten und zu verfolgen.

Judas aber kämpfte gegen die Söhne Esaus in Idumäa und in Akrabathane, weil sie die Israeliten einschlossen, und brachte ihnen eine große Niederlage bei.

Auch gedachte er der Bosheit der Söhne Beans, welche dem Volke zur Schlinge und zum Fallstricke gewesen waren, indem sie ihnen auf dem Wege auflauerten.

Diese wurden von ihm in die Türme eingeschlossen und er belagerte sie und vollstreckte den Bann an ihnen und verbrannte ihre Türme samt allen, die darin waren.

Alsdann zog er weiter gegen die Söhne Ammons und traf auf ein starkes Heer und zahlreiche Kriegsmacht und auf Timotheus, ihren Anführer.

Gegen diese lieferte er viele Schlachten und er schlug sie und sie wurden vor ihnen vernichtet.

Und nachdem er die Stadt Gazer und ihre Tochterstädte erobert hatte, kehrte er nach Judäa zurück.

Darnach versammelten sich die Heiden in Galaad wider die Israeliten, die innerhalb ihres Gebietes wohnten, um diese auszurotten. Sie aber flohen in die Feste Datheman

und sandten Briefe an Judas und seine Brüder des Inhalts: Die Heiden haben sich rings um uns vereinigt, um uns zu vernichten.

Sie schicken sich an, zu kommen und die Feste einzunehmen, in welche wir geflohen sind, und Timotheus ist der Anführer ihres Heeres.

So komme nun und errette uns aus ihrer Gewalt, denn eine Menge von uns ist gefallen.

Auch alle unsere Brüder, welche im Gebiete von Tubin wohnten, sind getötet; ihre Frauen und Kinder, sowie ihre Habe haben jene gefangen weggeführt und haben daselbst bei tausend Männer getötet.

Noch wurde der Brief verlesen, siehe, da kamen andere Boten aus Galiläa mit zerrissenen Kleidern und meldeten Ähnliches,

indem sie sprachen, es hätten sich gegen sie die Bewohner von Ptolemais und Tyrus und Sidon gesammelt und ganz Galiläa sei voll der Fremden, die uns vertilgen wollen.

Da nun Judas und das Volk diese Nachrichten hörte, vereinte sich eine große Versammlung, um zu beratschlagen, was sie für ihre Brüder, die in Bedrängnis waren und von jenen bekriegt wurden, tun sollten.

Da sprach Judas zu seinem Bruder Simon: Wähle dir Männer aus und ziehe hin und befreie deine Brüder in Galiläa, ich aber und mein Bruder Jonathas, wir werden nach Galaad ziehen.

Und er ließ Joseph, den Sohn des Zacharias, und Azarias als Befehlshaber des Volkes bei dem Reste des Heeres in Judäa zum Schutze zurück.

Und er gebot ihnen und sprach: Stehet diesem Volke vor, doch liefert den Heiden keine Schlacht, bis wir zurückkehren.

Hierauf wurden dem Simon dreitausend Mann zugeteilt, dass er nach Galiläa ziehe, dem Judas aber achttausend Mann für Galaad.

So zog denn Simon nach Galiläa und lieferte den Heiden viele Schlachten und die Heiden wurden vor ihm niedergeworfen und er verfolgte sie bis zum Tore

von Ptolemais und es fielen von den Heiden gegen dreitausend Mann und er nahm ihnen Beute ab.

Hierauf nahm er die, welche in Galiläa und in Arbat waren mit ihren Weibern und Kindern und allem, was sie hatten, und brachte sie mit großer Freude nach Judäa.

Judas aber, der Machabäer, und sein Bruder Jonathas überschritten den Jordan und zogen drei Tagreisen weit durch die Wüste.

Da stießen die Nabuthäer auf sie, diese begegneten ihnen friedlich und erzählten ihnen alles, was ihren Brüdern in Galaad widerfahren war

und dass viele von ihnen in Barasa und in Bosor und in Alimis und Kasphor, Maget, und Karnaim, lauter großen und festen Städten, festgehalten seien.

Aber auch in den übrigen Städten von Galaad werden Gefangene zurückgehalten und für den folgenden Tag haben die Feinde beschlossen, mit ihrem Heere gegen diese Städte zu ziehen, sie einzunehmen und jene an einem Tage zu vernichten.

Da wandte sich Judas mit seinem Heere plötzlich in die Wüste nach Bosor und nahm die Stadt ein und tötete alles, was männlich war, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, bemächtigte sich aller ihrer Beute und brannte sie nieder.

Des Nachts brachen sie von da auf und zogen bis zur Feste.

Als es aber Morgen ward und sie ihre Augen erhoben, siehe, da war eine Unmenge von Kriegsvolk, unzählbar viel, das Sturmleitern und Maschinen trug, um die Feste einzunehmen und die Juden zu überwältigen.

Als nun Judas sah, dass der Kampf begonnen, und Kriegsgeschrei mit Trompetenschall zum Himmel aufstieg und lautes Geschrei aus der Stadt,

sprach er zu seinem Heere: Kämpfet heute für eure Brüder!

Hierauf fiel er jenen mit drei Heerhaufen in den Rücken, dazu ließen die Juden die Trompeten erschallen und riefen, laut betend.

Da erkannte das Heer des Timotheus, dass er der Machabäer sei, und sie flohen vor ihm; die Juden aber richteten eine große Niederlage unter ihnen an und es fielen ihrer an jenem Tage gegen achttausend Mann.

Hierauf wandte sich Judas gegen Maspha, erstürmte es und nahm es ein, tötete alles, was darin männlich war, und nahm die Beute und verbrannte die Stadt.

Von da zog er weiter und nahm Kasbon und Mageth und Bosor und die übrigen Städte von Galaad ein.

Nach diesen Begebenheiten sammelte Timotheus ein anderes Heer und lagerte sich Raphon gegenüber, jenseits des Flusses.

Da sandte Judas hin, über das Heer Kundschaft zu bringen, und es ward ihm berichtet: Es haben sich um ihn alle Völker gesammelt, die rings um uns her sind, eine überaus starke Heeresmacht.

Auch haben sie die Araber als Hilfstruppen gedungen und haben jenseits des Flusses ein Lager aufgeschlagen, bereit, mit dir den Kampf zu beginnen. Judas zog fort, ihnen entgegen.

Timotheus aber sprach zu den Obersten seines Heeres: Wenn Judas mit seinem Heere an den Fluss heranzieht und zuerst zu uns herüberkommt, werden wir nicht gegen ihn standhalten können, denn er wird uns überlegen sein.

Wenn er sich aber fürchtet, herüber zu kommen und sich jenseits des Flusses lagert, so wollen wir hinübergehen, ihnen entgegen, und werden über ihn die Oberhand erlangen.

Als nun Judas an den Fluss herangekommen war, stellte er die Vorsteher des Volkes an demselben auf und gebot ihnen und sprach: Lasset keinen hier zurückbleiben, sondern alle sollen in den Kampf ziehen!

Und ihnen zuvorkommend, setzte er auf das Ufer der Feinde über und das ganze Volk folgte ihm nach und alle Heiden wurden vor ihnen geschlagen, warfen ihre Waffen weg und flohen in den Tempel zu Karnaim.

Er nahm aber diese Stadt ein und zündete den Tempel an samt allen, welche darin waren. So ward Karnaim unterworfen und konnte Judas nicht standhalten.

Judas aber sammelte alle Israeliten, welche in Galaad waren, klein und groß, samt ihren Weibern und Kindern, ein sehr großes Heer, damit sie in das Land Juda zögen.

Und sie kamen bis Ephron. Dies ist eine große Stadt, am Eingange gelegen, sehr fest, bei der man weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken vorbeikommen konnte, denn der Weg führte mitten durch sie hindurch.

Die Bewohner der Stadt aber schlossen sich ein und versammelten die Tore mit Steinen. Da sandte Judas an sie und ließ mit friedlichen Worten

sagen: Lasset uns durch euer Land ziehen, dass wir in unser Land kommen; niemand wird euch Übles tun, wir wollen einzig hindurchziehen. Sie aber wollten ihnen nicht auftun.

Da ließ Judas in dem Heere ausrufen, ein jeder solle sich in Schlachtordnung stellen an dem Orte, wo er gerade sei.

Alsbald stellten sich die Männer des Heeres in Schlachtordnung und kämpften gegen die Stadt jenen ganzen Tag und die ganze Nacht und die Stadt fiel in seine Hände.

Da machten sie alles, was männlich war, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes nieder und er zerstörte sie von Grund aus und plünderte sie und zog durch die ganze Stadt über die Erschlagenen hinweg.

Sodann zogen sie über den Jordan in die große Ebene, Bethsan gegenüber.

Judas aber sammelte den Nachtrab und sprach dem Volke auf dem ganzen Wege Mut zu, bis sie in das Land Juda kamen.

Dann zogen sie auf den Berg Sion mit Freude und Jubel und brachten Brandopfer dar, weil keiner von ihnen gefallen war, bis sie in Frieden heimkehrten.

Während der Tage aber, wo Judas und Jonathas im Lande Galaad und sein Bruder Simon in Galiläa vor Ptolemais waren,

hörte Joseph, der Sohn Zacharias, und Azarias, der Anführer des Heeres, von den tapferen Taten und den Schlachten, welche geliefert wurden.

Da sprach er: Auch wir wollen uns einen Namen machen und hinziehen und wider die Heiden um uns her kämpfen.

So bot er denn sein Heer auf und sie zogen gegen Jamnia.

Gorgias aber zog samt seinen Leuten aus der Stadt heraus, ihnen entgegen zur Schlacht.

Joseph und Azarias wurden in die Flucht geschlagen bis an die Grenze von Judäa und es fielen an jenem Tage vom Volke Israel gegen zweitausend Mann und das Volk erlitt eine schwere Niederlage,

weil sie nicht auf Judas und seine Brüder gehört hatten, indem sie meinten, Heldentaten verrichten zu können.

Sie aber waren nicht vom Geschlechte jener Männer, durch welche in Israel Rettung geschaffen worden.

Die Männer von Juda dagegen wurden von ganz Israel und von allen Völkern, wo man ihren Namen hörte, hoch gerühmt.

Und viele strömten herbei unter freudigem Zuruf.

Hierauf zog Judas mit seinen Brüdern aus und kämpfte gegen die Söhne Esaus im Lande gegen Mittag und er eroberte Chebron und dessen Tochterstädte und brannte seine Mauern und Türme ringsumher nieder.

Sodann brach er auf, um in das Land der Fremdlinge zu ziehen, und durchzog Samaria.

An jenem Tage fielen Priester im Kampfe, indem sie Tapferkeit zeigen wollten, aber unbedacht in den Kampf auszogen.

Judas aber wandte sich nach Azot in das Land der Fremdlinge, zerstörte ihre Altäre und verbrannte die Schnitzbilder ihrer Götter und plünderte die Städte und kehrte hierauf in das Land Juda zurück.
