- Kapitel 21 -

And after these things, in that time, there was a vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, who was in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab, the king of Samaria.

Therefore, Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying: “Give your vineyard to me, so that I may make for myself a garden of herbs. For it is nearby and is beside my house. And I will give to you, in place of it, a better vineyard. Or if you consider it to be more convenient for you, I will give you the price in silver, whatever it is worth.”

Naboth responded to him, “May the Lord be gracious to me, lest I give to you the inheritance of my fathers.”

Then Ahab went into his house, angry and gnashing his teeth over the word that Naboth, the Jezreelite, had spoken to him, saying, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And casting himself on his bed, he turned away his face to the wall, and he would not eat bread.

Then Jezebel, his wife, entered to him, and she said to him: “What is this matter, by which your soul has been saddened? And why do you not eat bread?”

And he responded to her: “I spoke to Naboth, the Jezreelite, and I said to him: ‘Give your vineyard to me, and accept money. Or if it pleases you, I will give to you a better vineyard, in place of it.’ And he said, ‘I will not give my vineyard to you.’ ”

Then Jezebel, his wife, said to him: “You are of great authority, and you rule well in the kingdom of Israel. Rise up and eat bread, and be even-tempered. I will give the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, to you.”

Jezebel’s Plot

And so, she wrote letters in the name of Ahab, and she sealed these with his ring. And she sent to those greater by birth, and to the nobles who were in his city and living with Naboth.

And this was the judgment of the letters: “Proclaim a fast, and cause Naboth to sit among the first rulers of the people.

And send out two men, sons of Belial, against him. And let them speak the false testimony: ‘He has blasphemed God and king.’ And then lead him away, and stone him, and so let him die.”

Then his fellow citizens, those greater by birth and the nobles who were living with him in the city, did just as Jezebel had instructed them, and just as it was written in the letters that she had sent to them.

They proclaimed a fast, and they caused Naboth to sit among the first rulers of the people.

And bringing forward two men, sons of the devil, they caused them to sit opposite him. And they, acting indeed like diabolical men, spoke testimony against him before the multitude: “Naboth has blasphemed God and king.” For this reason, they led him away, beyond the city, and they put him to death by stoning.

And they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned, and he has died.”

Then it happened that, when Jezebel had heard that Naboth was stoned and was dead, she said to Ahab: “Rise up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, who was not willing to acquiesce to you, and to give it to you in exchange for money. For Naboth is not alive, but dead.”

And when Ahab had heard this, namely, that Naboth was dead, he rose up and descended to the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, so that he might take possession of it.

Elijah Denounces Ahab and Jezebel

Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah, the Tishbite, saying:

“Rise up, and descend to meet Ahab, the king of Israel, who is in Samaria. Behold, he is descending to the vineyard of Naboth, so that he may take possession of it.

And you shall speak to him, saying: ‘Thus says the Lord: You have killed. Moreover you have also taken possession.’ And after this, you shall add: ‘Thus says the Lord: In this place, where the dogs have licked the blood of Naboth, they shall also lick your blood.’ ”

And Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you discovered me to be your enemy?” And he said: “I have discovered you to have been sold, so that you would do evil in the sight of the Lord:(a)

‘Behold, I will lead evil over you. And I will cut down your posterity. And I will put to death of Ahab whatever urinates against a wall, and whatever is lame, and whatever is last in Israel.(b)

And I will cause your house to be like the house of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha, the son of Ahijah. For you have acted so that you provoked me to anger, and so that you caused Israel to sin.’

And about Jezebel also, the Lord spoke, saying: ‘The dogs shall consume Jezebel in the field of Jezreel.

If Ahab will have died in the city, the dogs will consume him. But if he will have died in the field, the birds of the air will consume him.’ ”

Ahab’s Repentance

And so, there was no other person similar to Ahab, who was sold so that he did evil in the sight of the Lord. For his wife, Jezebel, urged him on.

And he became abominable, so much so that he followed the idols that the Amorites had made, whom the Lord consumed before the face of the sons of Israel.

Then, when Ahab had heard these words, he tore his garments, and he put haircloth on his body, and he fasted, and he slept in sackcloth, and he walked with his head downcast.

And the word of the Lord came to Elijah, the Tishbite, saying:

“Have you not seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Therefore, since he has humbled himself because of me, I will not lead in the evil during his days. Instead, during the days of his son, I will bring in the evil to his house.”

Naboth wird wegen seines Weinbergs ermordet

Nach diesen Begebenheiten geschah es um diese Zeit, dass Naboth, der Jezraheliter, einen Weinberg hatte, der in Jezrahel nahe bei dem Palaste Achabs, des Königs von Samaria, lag.

Achab nun redete zu Naboth und sprach: Gib mir deinen Weinberg, dass ich mir einen Gemüsegarten daraus mache, denn er ist nahe und neben meinem Hause gelegen, und ich werde dir statt seiner einen bessern Weinberg geben oder, wenn es dir vorteilhafter scheint, den Preis in Geld, so viel er wert ist.

Naboth aber antwortete ihm: Der Herr sei mir gnädig, das Erbe meiner Väter kann ich dir nicht geben.

Da kam Achab in sein Haus, missmutig und ergrimmt über die Antwort, die Naboth, der Jezraheliter, ihm gegeben hatte, indem er sprach: Das Erbe meiner Väter werde ich dir nicht geben. Und er warf sich auf sein Lager, kehrte sein Angesicht zur Wand und aß kein Brot.

Da kam sein Weib Jezabel zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Was ist die Ursache, dass deine Seele betrübt ist? Und warum issest du nicht dein Brot?

Er antwortete ihr: Ich habe mit Naboth, dem Jezraheliter, geredet und zu ihm gesagt: Gib mir deinen Weinberg und nimm dafür Geld oder, wenn es dir gefällt, will ich dir statt seiner einen besseren Weinberg geben; aber er sprach: Ich werde dir meinen Weinberg nicht geben!

Da sprach sein Weib Jezabel zu ihm: Großes Ansehen hast du und trefflich herrschest du über das Reich Israel! Steh auf, nimm Speise zu dir und sei guten Muts, ich will dir den Weinberg Naboths, des Jezraheliters, verschaffen.

Hierauf schrieb sie Briefe in Achabs Namen, siegelte sie mit seinem Ringe und sandte sie an die Ältesten und Vornehmsten, die in seiner Stadt waren und mit Naboth daselbst wohnten.

Der Inhalt der Briefe war dieser: Rufet ein Fasten aus und lasset Naboth sich unter die Vornehmsten des Volkes setzen

und stellet heimlich zwei Männer, Söhne Belials, gegen ihn auf, dass sie falsches Zeugnis ablegen und sagen: Er hat Gott und dem Könige geflucht! Dann führet ihn hinaus und steiniget ihn und so sterbe er.

Da taten seine Mitbürger, die Ältesten und Vornehmsten, welche mit ihm in der Stadt wohnten, wie Jezabel ihnen befohlen hatte und wie in den Briefen geschrieben stand, welche jene an sie gesandt hatte.

Sie riefen ein Fasten aus und setzten Naboth unter die Ersten des Volkes.

Dann führten sie zwei Männer herbei, Teufelskinder, und setzten sie ihm gegenüber; diese aber bezeugten, nämlich als teuflische Menschen, gegen ihn vor der Menge: Naboth hat Gott und dem Könige geflucht. Darum führten sie ihn zur Stadt hinaus und steinigten ihn zu Tode.

Dann sandten sie zu Jezabel und ließen ihr sagen: Naboth ist gesteinigt worden und tot.

Es begab sich aber, als Jezabel hörte, dass Naboth gesteinigt und tot sei, sprach sie zu Achab: Mache dich auf, nimm den Weinberg Naboths, des Jezraheliters, in Besitz, welcher dir nicht willfahren und ihn dir nicht für Geld verkaufen wollte; den Naboth lebt nicht mehr, sondern ist tot.

Als Achab dies hörte, nämlich dass Naboth tot sei, machte er sich auf und ging zu dem Weinberge Naboths, des Jezraheliters, hinab, um ihn in Besitz zu nehmen.

Der HERR verurteilt Ahab

Das Wort des Herrn aber erging an Elias, den Thesbiter, also:

Mache dich auf und gehe hinab, Achab entgegen, dem Könige von Israel, der in Samaria wohnt; siehe, er ist in den Weinberg Naboths hinabgegangen, um ihn in Besitz zu nehmen.

Rede zu ihm und sage: So spricht der Herr: Du hast gemordet und dann dir zugeeignet! Und weiter sage: So spricht der Herr: An diesem Orte, an dem die Hunde das Blut Naboths geleckt haben, sollen sie auch dein Blut lecken.

Achab sprach zu Elias: Hast du mich dir feindselig erfunden? Er sprach: Ich habe dich so erfunden, weil du dich verkauft hast, um zu tun, was vor dem Herrn böse ist.

Siehe, ich werde Unglück über dich kommen lassen und werde deine Nachkommen abmähen und von Achab töten, wer die Wand näßt, und den Eingeschlossenen und Geringsten in Israel.

Und ich will deinem Hause tun, wie ich dem Hause Jeroboams, des Sohnes Nabats, und wie ich dem Hause Baasas, des Sohnes Ahias, getan habe, weil du mich mit deinem Tun zum Zorne gereizt und Israel zur Sünde verführt hast.

Aber auch über Jezabel redete der Herr und sagte: Die Hunde werden Jezabel auf dem Felde von Jezrahel fressen!

Stirbt Achab in der Stadt, so sollen ihn die Hunde fressen; stirbt er aber auf dem Felde, so sollen ihn die Vögel des Himmels verzehren.

Es hat also keinen anderen gegeben, der so wie Achab war, der sich verkaufte zu tun, was böse war vor dem Herrn, denn sein Weib Jezabel reizte ihn dazu an

und er ward derart verabscheuungswürdig, dass er den Götzen anhing, welche die Amorrhiter gemacht hatten, die der Herr vor den Söhnen Israels vernichtet hatte.

Als nun Achab diese Worte hörte, zerriss er seine Kleider und legte ein härenes Gewand um den bloßen Leib und fastete und schlief in einem Bußgewande und ging mit gebeugtem Haupte einher.

Da erging das Wort des Herrn an Elias, den Thesbiter, also:

Hast du nicht gesehen, wie Achab sich vor mir gedemütigt hat? Weil er sich also meinetwillen verdemütigt hat, will ich das Unglück nicht in seinen Tagen hereinbrechen lassen, sondern in den Tagen seines Sohnes will ich das Unglück über sein Haus kommen lassen.
